Here's a dedicated group for all prospective Wolverines to discuss things. Figured every other school had a similar thread made, why not Michigan? Feel free to discuss housing, culture, academia, nightlife, etc.

I want to discuss, how do you guys plan on finishing the MPH program in 2 years? If I go to UM, I have exactly 4 semesters to graduate. Seems like one has to take 15 credits per semester to graduate on time. Isnt that too much??
 
go blue! michigan is the front runner unless something comes up in the near future. i have a few friends there in the college of pharmacy, so it's all good for me. 👍

Don't forget that your internship, typically taken between years 1 and 2, counts as 3-6 of those credits.

Even then, its still somewhere between 13.5-14.25 credits/semester. Considering 9 credits is full-time, isnt it still a bit much? Im still scarred from taking 15 credits/semester in undergrad. Granted I was a science major so the workload was heavy. Trying to see if the workload is similiar 😱
 
It does seem like a lot, especially since you will also be working on your portfolio at the same time (although that counts for 1-2 credits each term). Maybe the courses there are really easy or something?

I sure hope the courses are easy enough:laugh: I'm in HBHE. It states that 30 credits of the 60 must be HBHE courses. Where is the other 30 credits supposed to be from? Is it supposed to be only SPH courses or does it include all college courses (undergraduate)?

I'll be doing my MPH concurrent with ROTC courses. If the ROTC courses (2-3 credits each) counts towards the other 30 credits required, it'd be awesome. I'm thinking about retaking Bio/Chem (undergrad level) again, or a business class here and there. It'd be cool if they counted as well.:laugh:
 
I'm pretty sure they have to be graduate level, or senior level at least. The student handbook on the website should clarify.

I went back on the website and checked out the other concentrations within the SPH. All of the other concentrations have a sample class schedule. All of them have 13-16 credits/semester!😱 I'm going to assume HBHE is no different. Wow.:scared:
 
I am interested to know, what are some reasons for choosing the University of Michigan over other top programs? Obviously Ann Arbor is not New York, Boston, or LA. Thoughts?

what i really love about michigan is the support from the faculty and staff members. aside from the large professional network, i find the faculty members are very welcoming and easy to talk to. i visited the school in october 2011 when attended a friend's white coat ceremoney at the college of pharmacy. i had some free time, and thought i'd swing by the school of public health to visit. the experience was very welcoming, and i really can't say the same thing about the other top ranked schools aside from uc berkeley.
 
i was contacted by a faculty member this morning to ask for my contact #, so he may speak to me about the prospect of enrollment, financial assistance/opportunities, and some aspects of the academic program i may not aware of. is this normal?
 
I just signed a lease in Ann Arbor for next year. Later today, I will accept my decision online. Anyone else thinking, "It's great to be, a Michigan Wolverine?"
 
anyone went to the "say-yes-to-michigan" event last friday? please share your experience! any positive and negative comments will be appreciated.
 
I just got an email that says I am awarded the Dean's Scholarship (quarter tuition) :laugh:👍

Though since I'm using my GI Bill + Yellow Ribbon... I don't think it matters:laugh: But its the thought that counts 😀

Awesome. You deserve a great deal for serving this country! Nice to hear you're choosing the University of Michigan.

On the other hand, that sounds promising for any future applicants who have not yet received notification of a scholarship. Everyone stay positive.

I actually found a house via Craigslist with some friends. However, I should tell you, I currently work in Ann Arbor (so it was a bit easier). I did not go to Michigan for undergrad, but have become pretty familiar with the area over the past 9 months. If you have any questions about pricing, bus stops, popular housing neighborhoods, just ask!

I'm still trying to make a decision between Michigan, Emory, and Columbia. I was definitely most impressed by Michigan when I visited, but I'm kind of concerned that they seem very academic/theory oriented. At the moment I don't see myself doing a PhD, so I'm wondering if choosing Michigan is going to make it difficult to get into a public health career.

Do any of you guys have any opinion on this? I'd love to get the opinion of any current U Mich students, if there are any

Look up a user name Heal&Teach (not sure if this is the exact name). He/she did the MPH in HBHE and has a good explanation for this issue in a past thread.
 
Right now, I have been having a hard time deciding between Yale and Michigan. Michigan is definitely much closer to me in terms of location because I'm from the Midwest, but after I went to the Yale Open House, I realized that the faculty and students seemed almost like colleagues. All of them were really laid back. I wonder if that had to do with it being a smaller program.

With Michigan being such a big program, is it that much harder for students to set up appointments with faculty to discuss their classwork or research? I don't want half of my masters work to entail phone/email tag lol!! How's the faculty/student interaction at Michigan?

one of the professors called me up and i asked the same question during my conversation w/ him. he said that there are profs who are busier than others. however, the faculty tries very hard to meet with their students as much as possible. most people have no problem with students just walking into the office to chat with them. it is difficult to have that close connection w/ everyone given that it is a big program, but it is also what you make of it.

Okay, thanks for your reply! I'll be visiting Michigan this coming week. Hopefully i can set up an appointment with faculty and students and get a feel for the campus.

Hi folks,

I am an international student and I plan to apply for some loans. I plan to call UMich office of finance and see if there is any possibility for me to take loan. But it will be great if someone here can comment on my chance to get some sort of loan from UMich or how UMich is friendly towards giving loans

Wish that I will see you guys at UMich this fall!
 
The schools themselves don't give the loans (with the exception of some emergency short term loans or payment plan type arrangements at some schools). Loans are secured through a lender/financial institution. All the school does is provide a "cost of attendance" report, but your credit worthiness is what will get you the loan.

Yup, I'm looking for housing. Not sure if I should live in Northwoods but they seem fairly cheap at $600-700/month will everything included
 
I believe Northwoods is in North Campus. This will not hurt you for academics, the buses run regularly. However, your social life and Michigan experience may be a little different, seeing how most of the University is located in Central Campus (Restaurants, bars, movies, majority of campus, sports arenas, etc.)

Just a thought.
 
yeah I've heard a lot of good things about Kerrytown, so I'm starting to look there.

I would also look into Ann Arbor Craigslist. Lots of students looking to add one more rommate for the upcoming year.
 
Hi folks,

I intend to take a loan of 35k to attend Michigan this year. Can you share your thoughts about the employability of an international MPH graduate from Michigan? Is it too risky for an international student to take such a loan?

I know I'm late in the game as I'm STILL trying to decide between Michigan and Columbia. I wasn't able to go to the open house at the end of March, can anyone tell me if Michigan is good at preparing students who want to enter the international public health field? I'm in the health behavior/education Department so I'm not sure how the global certificate works...
How do you guys feel about the curriculum? Do you think it is inter-disciplinary? Or do you stick with your department the whole 2 years?
Also, is it easy to move from one department into another?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm just literally stuck right now :/

Hi RumbaToMD,

I can't speak on the international public health aspect but I can tell you that I do think the curriculum is pretty interdisciplinary. You are also able to take courses in other schools like the Rackham Graduate School. I think the course load is pretty flexible in allowing you to pick your electives: 30 core credits and 30 elective credits. I think it's probably not that hard to switch departments and you are actually required to take biostat and epid courses as part of the core. I hope this helps! I was in your position as well with being stuck so good luck!
