not that it matters but my writing score was a Q

Considering that you don't have a forgiving state MD school, unless you have some wow-factor ECs, getting an MD admission with your current MCAT score would be difficult. If you think that score is a fluke, retake the MCAT ASAP. If that was the score you expected, you'll probably need a formal prep course and three months of full-time study before you attempt it again. If doing all that work seems too difficult or unlikely to bear fruit, then applying DO is a great option, as you'd be quite competitive at many of their schools. Lucky for you, there is a great in-state school.

The Q makes no difference.

Against my better judgment I will offer some help to a Wolverine (jk). Ya, MSU-CHM, Wayne and UM all have pretty high avg. MCATs with Wayne and UM being the highest ( i think CHM was a 30, not to crazy). Retake the MCAT if you feel like you could get a few more points and apply MD, you should be ok there. If not, your golden for a DO school, especially MSU-COM; great school, great system and a pretty damn good match list, comparatively. you could apply now, take the july MCAT if you want, and youll be ok. I think as far as MD goes, your best instate bet (numbers wise) will be CHM, but they are pretty hard core about the altruistic EC's.

I'm a Wolverine who was pretty much in the opposite situation as you are - good MCAT, bad GPA - the good thing for you is that the MCAT can be fixed much more easily than the GPA can - take a prep class (I took Kaplan, and while the classroom part wasn't super-helpful, the online study stuff and especially the practice tests were a boon).

FWIW, UIllinois is very forgiving on numbers if you are an interesting candidate (though, as I found out too late, it is hellishly expensive OOS); Wayne should also be an option; and then some private schools. Just makes sure you do your research and apply broadly and smartly - that definitely helped me to gain at least one acceptance (and two active waitlists)

I think it would help to decide if it would feel like you were "settling" at all if you decided to apply to DO schools. If you have any sense that you would be "settling" for a DO school, then what is the point? Kick a- on your next MCAT and get in somewhere you are satisfied with. If you don't feel like going to a DO school is settling for something less, then I would go for it.

U of Illinois is a fine school. Students at the regional campuses tend to get great board scores and the Chicago campus uses Cook County hospital (famous) for some clinicals (pretty sure, anyhow).

/Don't settle
//Unless that thing doesn't feel like settling
///Then do that thing

The Q makes no difference.

I wonder why they even keep the writing section of the MCAT. It seems to be redundant as medical school admissions committees get multiple samples of our writing through our primary and secondary applications. It'd also be sweet to be in the test room for an hour less.
