I am a wisconsin resident, and am thinking of applying to um-tc next summer. Since I am out of state, what are the odds of getting in. I know it varies by applicant, but what do people think are good numbers to have a good shot at getting in? I looked on mdapplicants.com, but of course those are really inflated. I also looked at the average gpa and average mcat. However, I am only wondering about getting in as a wisconsin resident. Anyone with any experience, guesses actual info etc... would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and good luck to all applying this year.

I'm planning on moving to MN, but am wondering about MN resident chances at Madison. Anyone know?

Someone once told me that WI resident has 1 in 5 chance of getting into MN. What that was based on I have NO idea.

well, I've applied to MN. No word yet, but they are really, really slow I guess. Oh, but I did get a 2ndary. I'm a WI resident, living in MN currently (as you can tell by my location to the left), so I hope that will give me some pull. But if I get into Madison, I'll probably go there due to the huge tuition difference, unless I'd get some kind of sweet deal, which isn't probable with my completely average stats.

So that doesn't really help right now, but check back in April or May:laugh:

It's probably not that easy. Madison has a point system 5.5=waitlist and 6=accepted. In-staters start with 3 and out of staters lower than that. So it is probably pretty hard to get into out of state. Just my guess b/c I'm not sure, so don't let me stop you from trying.

I'm confused. Are you saying it's not that easy for a MN person to get into WI, or it's not that easy for a WI person to get into MN. I'm a WI resident, so I've got those 3 points!! 😕

UMinn has a larger out of state portion of their class than UWisc does.
Minnesota also happens to offer 25 "scholarships" each year - awarded to out of state applicants who will attend. The scholarship is the tuition difference between in and out of state. Pretty sweet deal.

BUMP

Has anyone heard anything recently from U of Minn about interview invites? After people's (post-secondary) files are complete, does the admissions dean e-mail everyone that their file is complete and that they will hear from the school within a month or less whether or not they are offered an interview?

Thanks & best of luck! :luck:

Today I got an email from U of M. It said something along the lines of "thanks for your patience. Your file has been given to a reviewer. You should hear in a month, hopefully less, whether you receive an interview." Is this an email everyone gets? Or are they sending them out because they're behind or something? I was complete on 10-24.

Hi Akpete,

That was exactly the e-mail that I was referring to in my previous post. Is there some sort of hidden meaning in this message or am I reading too much into it? It sounds optimistic unless it was a mass e-mail to all applicants. It would help to know if everyone got this e-mail. Seems like schools like to mess with our heads!

Hi CalvinandHobbes,

I'm taking it as they're finally reviewing my file, and they feel like they're behind, so an email is needed so we all sit tight and don't call them. I'm going to try to not get my hopes up (being out of state), but it really is a pick-me-up anytime you get any type of correspondence from a med school! 🙂 Were you complete about the same time as me? Maybe it was a mass email to apps around that time frame?

Hi Akpete,

I was just wondering about the e-mail because it sounded personal. If it were a mass e-mail, it would have been from the admissions office rather from a specific person, Dr. Becker herself. Actually, I was complete a few days ago. Oh, I just realized that you also are a frequent poster on the thread 2005 discussion board. Since my initial posts on SDN (i'm pretty new here), I frequent that thread, too. But it's tough to get answers to questions on that thread since multiple topics are going on. But regardless, G'luck! :luck:

I got it too, yesterday. Complete a long time ago.

I too got the aforementioned email from Dr. Becker yesterday, although I wouldn't be surprised if someone else in the admissions office sent it. I initially thought the email was somewhat personalized, but this thread leads me to believe otherwise. I was complete about two weeks ago.

The one part of this email that confuses me a bit is the wide range of completion dates. hmmm...

I agree, it's odd that the e-mail was sent to people with different completion dates: from october to a few days ago.

Are you on to something, Akpete? Maybe the e-mail is a sign of what's to come...ah...

But let us know if you've heard from U of MN after receiving the e-mail (hopefully, an interview invite!)

I got it too. Completed mid october.

I completed my secondary in Sept. and just got the email. Keeping my fingers crossed. I just hope they are behind!

Any one heard anything after the e-mail?
I got the e-mail too but have heard nothing since.

I was just going to post the same question....

Anyone... anyone... Bueller....

not yet... 🙁

From when I rec'd my e-mail, this week will end the 3 wk deadline they gave themselves. Is this true for anyone else?

Um, I received an interview invite about a week and a half ago. It's scheduled for January 10. My parents live in Minneapolis and I go to school about an hour south of the cities, so I'm definitely a resident.

Was the invite via snail or e mail?

Rayofdiana, did you get the email that was mentioned earlier that told us to sit tight for a few weeks? Or did you get the interview without that email?

By the way, where do you go to school? I'm in Mankato. (WI resident though)

I did get the sit tight email, and was annoyed just like everyone else since I'd been complete for months. It seems like the U of M is really, ridiculously slow. I'm from Carleton, and I have another Carleton friend who hasn't heard anything yet either. My last name is early in the alphabet, so maybe that has something to do with it?

They stand about the same chance as every out of state resident. I'd put it at about 0% but realistically your odds are 1:250 to get accepted and 1:30 to get a secondary. Go fer it!

I am out of state, had been completed for months, got the letter to wait for an asnwer on Dec 9th, finally got the invitation to interview on Dec 28th.

For anyone who got the "sit tight" email. If you haven't heard anything, make sure you call the school and inquire. I got the e-mail on the 9th to wait 3 wks and after 3wks, I figured a rejection was in the mail since I didn't get an interview invite. Well, I decided to call them today and check on my status. Turns out they e-mailed me an interview invite on the 28th which I never received. Please follow up everyone!!

I did get the please wait email about a month ago and received my rejection letter yesterday 🙁 Good luck to the rest of you!

Hey hey,

I've been interested in the UofM med school for years. Recently, I've been hearing a lot about how the U isn't quite what it once was. Its rankings are still great, in-state tuition is nice, and there are loads of research and clinical opportunities. However, many local physicians' opinions of the U have been lowered. Furthermore, average board scores have been declining over the last 5 years.
It seems that the budget cuts made by the gov and the absense of a Dean have hurt the U. I am worried that the U that I had a penchant for in years past is now slumping and will not be able to offer me the educational experience that the USnews rankings suggest. Does anyone have evidence to show that the U is still the amazing school that it once was? What do the current students and alum have to say about the quality of the U? 👍 ? 👎 ?

As an alum of the undergrad institution and a lab employee at the U, I think that there is a definite transition going on across the entire University. As you may know, state funding has been cut fairly drastically over the past five years and tuition has increased accordingly. These cuts have also led to an increase in med tuition until they recently froze tuition at the med school. I think overall that these economic hardships have made it more difficult for the U to attract and keep some of the top professors in several fields.

HOWEVER

It seems that Gov. Pawlenty is hellbent on making Minneapolis a center of biomedical research and innovation. This means that the University will continue to be one of the leading institutions researching stems cells (adult and embryonic) as well as other emerging fields. I believe there is also a large initiative being funded by the state in which the U and Mayo Clinic will collaborate on a great deal of research. This will undoubtedly benefit the University's med school by bringing in more grants and excellent researchers. I see the U becoming more of a research-driven institution, and perhaps losing focus on the family practice aspect of medicine (which they have ceded to the University of Minnesota-Duluth med school). I think the quality of education is the same, it's just being given a different focus. You know, apples and oranges, and whatnot.

How much did you all write for the 'alternative career' question on the secondary? I can count the number of words in my response on one hand, and I am beginning to wonder if my brevity has been construed as a lack of interest and/or seriousness. Hopefully I didn't make a colossal error in judgement...

I don't think that I wrote much for that question either, but I kinda already have an alternate career (athletic training), so that makes it a little easier.

So anyway, I have a question. To those of you that got the email in December and have heard back - either way - when were you complete?? I'm wondering if maybe they're going in order 😕 Everytime I go to the mailbox, I am praying that there is nothing there (well, from MN at least).

livercod, have you heard from them yet? I hope it's good news!! 🙂

Nada. Nil. Zilch. I must say at this point I'm expecting the skinny #10.

Does anyone know how soon after the interview you get a response. Are they on rolling admissions? Just curious.

Yeah, they are definitely rolling. I know someone with 3.4/31 who was accepted in early October, so they are not only accepting people with stellar stats. I think it's to the applicant's benefit if the school thinks s/he will almost certainly attend if accepted.

Oh great. Now I have that awful Whitney Houston song "How Will I Know?" stuck in my head. Thanks 😉

What? What about the RPAP program? That's huge at the TC campus. Also, those Duluth students merge with the TC students in the 3rd year and will continue to do that, so the clinical part shouldn't lose its focus.

I have to agree that the state of education in this state is on a serious decline. We ranked as one of the very lowest states this year in increase in educational spending. That's Pawlenty for you... Apparently that's what the people of Minnesota want and I find it hard to believe that those same people are going to suddenly bound ahead in biomedical research, no matter what anyone says.

(Still I think the U is a great school!)

Well ladies and gentlemen, I'm bowing out of this thread. Got my rejection letter today. Kinda stung a bit - live in MN and went to the U for a year + summer. And they actually included reapp info as if I won't get in anywhere else. How insulting 😡 ...(damn I need an acceptance 🙂 )

I hear you!! It's tough getting a rejection letter from your state school. Good luck with the rest of the schools!!
🙂

What is more important to the Minnesota-TC admissions, research experience or clinical volunteer work? I've heard that research is important to get into the research schools, but not for the primary care schools.

I just looked over your profile again... I can't understand why you haven't been green lighted yet. Really a mystery 😕 . It's coming, though - you have certainly earned it.
