Has anyone heard anything past the first round on Dec. 1st. I spoke with admssions and they said "we are being conservative with our acceptances this year." Not sure what that means!?!

i'm guessing it means they aren't just going to give acceptances to people with high stats that will probably get in other places, and then choose their higher choice school over the insanely cold land of Minnesota. jk, i really liked the school, i think it is awesome. also, they are probably waiting to interview more applicants to have a larger pool...in other words, they aren't doing what Case and Nova do🙂

my friend got in first round dec1

I talked with admissions at Minn. last week. They said they there are having another admission committee meeting this week and they send out more letters then. They are taking longer this year because of Gale Shea leaving the school last summer. They also said the class is not full yet. So, basically they accepted some people Dec. 1, then they had another round of acceptances in mid December again and now again in early jan.

I was told in my interview that they are going about it this way in order to interview more people. This will allow them to get to see a wider selection of applicants.

What number / time of day are you guys calling? Every time I've tried, there was no answer.

I was also told they were only interviewing 200 people. Did anyone else hear that? Also, does anyone know of any rejections being made to those who have interviewed. I was in one of the first groups in early september and haven't heard a thing. I am thinking I am going to be stuck on the waitlist or denied. So much for rolling admissions.

I was told at my interview that they would probably be interviewing around 280. I had my interview mid Nov and got an offer on Dec 22. I heard from someone that interviewed in Dec that the next round of offers would be around Jan 15th.

Did they do away with rolling admissions this year? In the past a november or december interview was a death sentence. Congrats to you! So what are the September/October interiew people to think at this stage if they have yet to hear anything. Does your file move into each selection cycle if it is not selected the first time?

I was told 200 also...but that was from the tour guide.

I know some people have already been denied, so I would assume that if your app got put in the that pile you would have heard by now. So if you haven't heard anything there is still a chance. I would assume that they would keep the earlier interviewers apps in the pool. They should still compare you to the people being interviewed in dec and jan, because whos to say that you aren't more qualified then them if they don't compare you with them? Maybe what they mean by being conservative is that they are waiting to see the majority of the applicants before they send out too many offers.

Thanks for the update WENZ, its somewhat promising. Have the denials been from people who have interviewed?

No, I don't think they had interviews. But also, a friend of mine who is a 4th year dental student here said she knows several people that applied that she feels should probably get in and they haven't heard anything yet either.

That is encouraging Wenz. I applied in late October and I have not yet heard anything. I am getting kind of anxious/worried! I just wish they would hurry up with the admissions!

Has anyone had any experience with the Early Admissions program at U of M? I am meeting with Laura Boland in a few weeks to discuss my eligibility for the 2008 EA class, but everytime I ask about the details of the program all they tell me is that "details haven't been finalized yet"...any insider info?

The only thing I've heard about the Early Admission program is that they are thinking about getting away from it. I'm not sure if it's true, but that's just what I heard through the grape vine. What is your state of residence toothfairy?

Go to Dentistry.umn.edu and click on the early admissions program link. There is a list of 12 criteria that you must meet in order to be considered for EA.

I am from MN, so U of M would be my state school...I know they got away from the after 3 years of undergrad thing, but I think that this Early Admissions is more like an early notification...I would still be completing an undergrad degree from UND (familiar to you at all, DakotaDentist?). Guess I'll just have to wait and see what Ms. Boland tells me next week! Thanks all!

Yeah, I'm familiar with UND. I attended SDSU in Brookings, SD. Let me know what Laura Boland tells you next week. I'm interested to hear what she says!

So I spoke with a 4th year today and got the details about the upcoming notifications. The class has filled 85 of 98 seats and has yet to hear from a number of those offered seats. Thus, there will only be 10 or so positions offered next week. A waitlist will be generated, however over the last few years there are usually only 2-4 people taken off the waitlist. Let the application for 08 commence.

Is that 85 people who got sent offers or 85 people that accepted the offer? My friend told me that Dr. Madden told her that about 80 offers have been sent out and he expects that about 80% will accept the offer. So if that is the case, if 85 offers have been sent out, about 68 should accept and that should still leave about 30 slots left. Also, remember that about 30 of those were early acceptance people.

I am sure you are right. I just got that number from Gale's last "applying to dental school" seminar, that about 30% is early admit. Maybe you were there? She also said typically they send out around 120 offers to fill the seats, except last years was the lowest at around 105, if I recall correctly?

I also think that they have only sent out around 85 offers. Which means there are still plenty of spots to fill since not all 85 people will accept at Minnesota. There's still hope for all of us who haven't heard from Minnesota yet!

Thanks for all the information, everybody. While it's a bit of a rollercoaster for me to read what the possible numbers are, it's also good to know that other people are thinking and wondering right along with me.

Anyhow, you all might like the most recent issue of the University of Minnesota's dentistry magazine; it has an article with some interesting points about admissions. I couldn't tell for sure if the article was referring to this year's cycle, but it said the school interviewed 245 out of 855 applicants. Also, check out one of the graphs - in the late 70s/early 80s, the class was 150 students! There's also the usual "we take a holistic approach, not just the top scores" stuff in the article, which I always find hard to believe but also, paradoxically, comforting. Hope the article helps pass the time until you all get good news! Good luck, everyone.

That is a good article. I think the number are from last year, though, because I read it before I interviewed (beginning of October).
