I was just recently accepted to the University of Minnesota, but face a difficult question. I wanted to ask people who turned down other offers to attend MN and their reason being why. Cost is not a factor, and weather is a given.
What stood out to you about MN to make you pull the lever.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Are you in state or not? If you are out of state, it would also depend on where else you got acceptance. MN has a great sim lab, and great access to patients. When did you interview?

Here are the reasons I liked the University of Minnesota:
-good class size (not too big or too small)
-lots of research opportunities (if you want to beef up your resume for specialties or if you just enjoy research)
-great sim clinics (they have a regular sim clinic but also have an advanced sim clinic that only a few schools nationwide have...great technology)
-large patient pool
-enough chairs for all the students so no fighting to get clinic time
-people are "Minnesota Nice" so its a great atmosphere
-the Twin Cities is a great area to live in (Minneapolis is more modern and has lots of fun places while Saint Paul is a little older with lots of artsy stuff and historic sites, and a pretty cool science museum for us nerds 🙂 )...plus there is a low crime rate so you don't have to look over your shoulder when you walk around at night
-weather is actually a plus because you get to experience FOUR seasons a year (yes the winters are cold, but the summer is hot, and fall/spring are in the middle)
-you get to interact with dental hygiene and dental therapy students (people you will be professionally interacting with for the rest of your career)
-large campus so there are lots of places to study/things to do in case you get sick of being around all dental or health care areas (and there are lots of on-campus and near-campus apartments)

I interviewed at 5 schools and liked the U of MN the best, but of course that is just my opinion...I hope this helps you with your decision. Good luck! you can always look at their website to get a better feel for it too.

not trying to freak anybody out, but this was just last week and one of the altercations was just outside Moos (the dental school)

Not saying its the perfect city...but compared to other places, its not terrible. Its not like people start threads asking about safety around the Twin Cities...but they do in cities like Detroit.

I was pretty shocked when this incident happened, but its definitely out of the norm....its not like this kind of stuff happens everyday.
