I'm thinking of doing an externship there next year and was wondering if anyone has experience with this program? I'm looking for programs in the midwest to rotate at, any others people would recommend?

Me too. You a third year?

I know it's a new program and it has a rural emphasis. New programs have good and bad points (Quin can give more insight into that), but from my very limited experience with the program and it's directors, it seems well run.

I'm interested in hearing other opinions as well.

As for Midwest rotations, I will be doing one in the KC program, and am considering an Iowa one as well (also a new program).

I did a 4-week EM clerkship at UN back in 2004 - during the program's first year - and really enjoyed it. The residents were enthusiastic and the attendings were helpful. Most of the cases I saw were simple although I did get the opportunity to do procedures with the residents. We have a recent grad from the program who just started at our hospital ED and so far, everyone is very impressed with him. It's a strong program and well-worth the 4 weeks in Omaha if you are interested in training there for residency.

Most of the cases that you see as students are generally simple, however, the acuity is actually pretty high here in Nebraska. The further along in your training you get, the sicker the patients you get. By your second and third year, attendings or nurses will grab you and send you to go see the sick patients before they flag the patient as needing to be seen. Obviously sick patients are generally not allowed to sit around long enough for a student to take charge of the case. I just wanted to let you know that your experience as a student is not reflective of what your experience will be as a resident.
