I just realized I must have posted in the wrong thread...

Hello! Surprised I haven't seen a thread for University of New Mexico (UNM) 2010-2011 cycle!

You can use this to post your stats/questions/etc. Has anyone on this board applied to UNM this year? If so, have you heard from them yet?

This is my first time applying and I don't know what to expect. I've heard how competitive it is to get into this school so my fingers are crossed since this is my first choice!!! :xf:

Hey yeah I was looking all over the place for any insight about the interview process.... But there's nothing available! I have an interview this Saturday though. :xf:

Wow! Already?? Congrats!

When did you submit your PharmCAS application? From what I heard in the past, they conduct most their interviews in Feb & March..but must be different this year?

Good luck on the interview!

Hope you had a successful interview! Has anyone else heard back from UNM yet?

Also, do you know how long it takes after your interview to be notified of your acceptance/denial?

I'm applying to unm too 🙂 good luck to u both! This wait is just killing me. How early did you two submit your pharmcas app?

Wow, that's early compared to me 😉 I didn't submit mine until right before the deadline. Yikes!!! I haven't heard anything either. Did you take the pCAT in oct? Have you applied before? I haven't, but hoping all goes well and I won't have to.😎

This is my first time applying and hopefully my only time! I took that October PCAT (and it was soooooo hard!). But it looks as though they've already started the interview cycles. I believe the 2nd round of interviews is this coming weekend.

I wish there was more of a New Mexican representation here! I've heard that 1500-2000+ people apply every year...!!!!! :scared:

Yeah, I don't know anyone really that is applying from here. I met two other people through classes, but they weren't too friendly, hehe. Do you currently attend @ UNM? Do you know how they contact people for interviews, ph, email? I am dying for some sort of response.

maybe its because I've been at UNM for a while that I feel more people are applying to their Pharm program than their Med program. yeah most of the prepharm students are pretty competitive so it may seem like they're "rude" but im sure thats the case in most schools...esp with premed students.

ive heard in the past they contact for interview through email first and then a letter in the mail making it official...and usually its about 2 weeks before your interview.

Ahh, maybe I'm just too friendly 😀 it's not like getting to know other applicants makes or breaks your chances. I don't get it 😎.....o well to each their own.

So what's your prepharm story green chili? 🙂

Just sent you a message. Where is the NM representation on here?!!!!????

Hey guys.. Sorry about the delay just been busy with other interviews. The students and faculty were all very nice.. I interviewed with all out-of-staters. I was also told that we turned it in early thats why we got the first interview slot.. ( I think i turned it in October). Most of the p1s that we gave us a tour were from UNM and interviewed last year in April.... So i dont thiink interviewing first gave us an advantage... I think they may have used us for practice! If you guys do get interviews, expect a relaxed and chilled atmosphere... I spent most of my time proving why Lakers are going to win the championship this year... Lol.. This is probably my first choice after interviewing at other schools, but this is also probably the toughest since they accept so few out of state students.. (7ish last year)If I can find the paper they gave me I can show the number of applicantions they received this year.. (sorry for typos... Im getting used to the IPad and im also at the airport lol) goodluck!

pharmDeezy: Congrats again with getting the interview! I'm sure you feel relieved. And thanks for the insight! About how many students were in your interview group? And was the writing section of the interview hard? I feel like I would be most nervous about that section.

I'm still waiting! 🙁 This is my first choice too and I really hope I get in this year too.

also pharmDeezy, were you asked any really pharmacy technical related questions? like questions that require you to have studied you old notes for?

NM representation checking in.

I applied to UNM too. This is just a guess, but from past threads and other things I think they select the 7-9 out of state people from the very first interview cycle. Which means if you're out of state and plan on going to this school you need to apply early, like around November or so. Most of the interviews in February-May are in staters because they interview just about every in state applicant that submits an application. I think it's a little over 200 in state applications and close to 2000 out of state applications.

From the time I've spent with p2s and p3s at the school I think (again not sure obviously) that the interview is a large part of the application and is weighed more heavily than the PCAT and even GPAs to some extent.

Good luck to everyone that applied 👍 My third letter was late so if I get an interview it won't be until march or april. Oh and I've been told that the writing part really isn't anything to worry about. As long as you can write coherent sentences with good grammar and usage you should be fine.

If anyone has questions about hotels or parking or anything about Albuquerque drop me a pm and I'll probably answer it at some point.

Just updating: yesterday I recieved an email stating that my app is complete and will be given full consideration, that if I'm selected for an interview I will be notified by mail. :xf: :xf:

So super anxious for an interview!!🙂

Thanks Notecard for the useful info. I am sure you did great on your interview and now you're finally complete with this process!!

I've heard the same thing that the interview is like 40-50% of it so its really heavily weighed!

Were there any super technical questions asked as well regarding basic pharmacy knowledge or things to recall from previous classes??

Hi Everyone i am also a student at UNM i'll be applying for the 2012 session, its nice to meet you guys and read about your experiences.

I interviewed at UNM this past Saturday. The interview is VERY casual compared to many other schools. It was more like a conversation, lots of personal questions about the application and personal statement. They seemed like they just really wanted to get to know me on a more personal level.

The only things that were more "technical" about the field of pharmacy was when they asked about what fields of pharmacy I was more interested in, but nothing too crazy or stressful.

Nice to meet you RimzyA!

Ugh this entire waiting process is killing me!
Nice to meet you too

Wow, seems like there is much more interaction! Cool!! I'm still waiting for any news. Good luck to everyone 🙂

Does anyone know how quick UNM generally is with responses after interviews? I have an acceptance offer elsewhere and I'm trying to hold off on putting down a deposit there, as UNM is my first choice and I don't necessarily feel like basically setting $500 on fire if I don't have to (I'm sure you can all relate to that fun balancing/waiting game lol).

At the interviews they told us anywhere from a week or two up until "sometime in May".... Just wondering if anyone had any firsthand experience to offer that was a bit more specific so I can plan the best course of action. =)

Pharmizzle are you in state or out of state applicant?

I am an New Mexico resident and my last year experience was I was interview on May 1st and I received a rejection letter on May 27. However, I think all the letter for in state applicants where sent out at the end of May. I think they interviewed in state applicants for most of April.

As for out of state, I believe they interviewed them first and they received notification earlier too.

Hope this helps

I got accepted woot! They acceptance letter was dated on 2/14 and i received it on the 17th! Woot! The deposit is 5big ones... Im conditionally accepted because i have to take one more class in the summer. Goodluck to everyone, especially my girlfriend who got an interview there too xD.😍:xf:😎

Thanks for the info! I'm in-state; I interviewed on Feb 19th. I was just hoping maybe they would be as quick as the school I was accepted to (received an acceptance letter four days after my interview), but I know that's a lot to hope for. Ah well, $500 is a small price to pay for some measure of peace of mind.

Wow Congrats pharmDeezy!!!! 👍

Your decision is so much earlier than I expected. When was your interview? From what I've heard in the past, they usually make most their decisions in April/May! Which schools did you considering besides UNM? And I'm curious what other programs are like compared to UNM's school since I havent really seen much else besides UNM's program (which is my 1st choice)

I wonder if in-staters find out early too...

I received my acceptance letter today! I interviewed the 19th and it was dated the 24th. So for those of you who get accepted for Class of 2015, I will be seeing you this Fall! =D

congrats pharmizzle!!

do you by chance know how many people from your interview session have been admitted yet?

Thanks GreenChili! I haven't heard from anyone else that they've been admitted, but most of the people I talked to at the session were out-of-staters. I think there were more people there than usual because some of them (including me) were rescheduled from the Feb 5th interviews that were canceled.

Have you heard anything back yet?

Ohhh you lucky ducks pharmizzle and pharmdeezy! Must be great to know the waiting game is over. Congrats and actually, it's not luck it's what you get when you try hard and make a reality of what you really want. 🙂 🙂

I got an email to let me know I had been selected & the date, as well as an official invitation in the mail. So both. Good luck, hopefully you will hear something soon!

Hii, congrats pharmizzle! See you in school next year if I decide to go. Dang, you got your acceptance fast, you must've been impressive! I was wondering if any of you New Mexicans have any input on housing?

Price range for 2bedroom apartments? Where to live, where not to live? Fun places to hang out?

Pharmizzle are you just commuting from home?

Congrats to you as well! What other schools are you considering besides UNM?

I own a 3-bedroom home here and I rent out the two other bedrooms for about $380 a month. I generally think you get a better deal sharing a house with a roommate versus getting your own apartment. I use roommates.com to find people.

A 2-bedroom apartment would probably run you anywhere from $500-800/month depending on what part of town you live in. It's been a couple years since I've lived in an apartment but I had a 2-bedroom that I paid around $700 a month for. I live in the Northeast Heights and I love it, but the downtown area near the school can be nice as well and a lot of students live there. Of course, there are nice parts of downtown and there are not-so-nice parts, just like in any city. The area near the Air Force base gets pretty ghetto, so I'd stay away from there (it's where I lived when I first moved here and didn't know any better lol).

The fun places are mostly clubs, bars, restaurants. There's lots of very unique places in Old Town - art galleries, specialty shops, things like that. Also if you like outdoor activities, camping, skiing/snowboarding, there's lots to do in that regard and the weather is gorgeous about 90% of the year. Albuquerque is a great place in my opinion, although I notice most people who grew up here seem to think it's boring for some reason. I moved here from the East, and I think ABQ has a very different kind of vibe that I enjoy a lot. Personally I love New Mexico, so I'm super excited to get accepted to UNM!

Hello! Just wondering if anyone else has heard anything. I've only got an application complete email from Krystal, but haven't heard anything else. I'm getting nervous haha. I wish everyone good luck and I hope we all hear something back soon 🙂

Just got an interview invite!!!! Thank god! 😀 😀 😀

Thanks for the info pharmizzle! I got into Bradenton too, it depends on where my girlfriend gets into before i make my decision... She got interviews for both UNM and LECOm as well.. I see that you got accepted there too... How Eerie (pun intended).

Hmm those prices are very reasonable compared to California.. Yeah i most definitely want to avoid "the ghetto" lol. Those activites sound a lot more fun then what my cab driver told me when i asked him... He said that "there is an apple store" that I might want to check out... I did my best to not laugh out loud...

Goodluck to miss13c... And if anyone out there knows how many people have been accepted both in state and out state please inform! Thanksss

Haha, that's as bad as when I got to Erie and the driver said "You must be here for LECOM." When I asked him how he knew, he said "Any time I see a young-looking person here, I figure it's for LECOM, 'cause there's nothing else to do here." I must say I'm very happy to be staying in Albuquerque!

I just wanted to know for those of you that got accepted or are already in the program, after you get your acceptance letter do you need to stay around town? I was hoping that if i apply and get accepted i could go home to Africa for the summer, this wont be a problem right? Thanks

I believe orientation is August 15. But as far as I know, you have no obligations to the school before then.

Have my interview on 4/16. I'm very excited!
