Does any one know anything about University of North Carolina Pharmacy School? Is it a good school...hard to get into? I'm thinking about applying but I'm not sure. One plus, is that I heard North Carolina is beautiful. I'd appreciate everyone's feedback on this. Thanks

I go to N.C. State (a rival school only 30 miles away), but I am originally from Florida. University of North Carolina is a very good school. However, the pharmacy school HEAVILY favors in-state applicants. 82% of the incoming class is from North Carolina and most of those students are either N.C. State or UNC-Chapel Hill students from undergrad (the two best public schools in North Carolina). (Duke is private!!!) If you are outstanding, and are an out-of-state student, then I would apply. I mean outstanding like almost a 4.0 GPA and 99 PCAT. By the statistics on the web page about 30% of in-state applicants area admitted but only 5% of out-of-state applicants are admitted. Huge difference!

Plus, it is very expensive out-of-state.

The in-state tuition is $10,000 without living expenses and the out-of-state has two be at least twice as much as that. So even if you were in-state you would be loaning around $18,000 a year to cover living expenses, and out-of-state, I am sure over $30,000 a year.

that is $18,000 * 4 = $72,000 in loans versus 120,000. Big difference!

The school only matters if you really want to do research, like me (drug discovery, clinical trials). If you just want to be a pharmacist, go to the cheapest school that accepts you.

in my highschoolwith someone who got into harvard did not get into Chapel Hill (because he was not in state)

Dont waste your time with them unless you are in state (or are stephen hawking)

I also applied for undergrad there but got rejected as i was out of state too.

Go for it. The worst that can happen is that they say no. UNC's School of Pharmacy was just ranked #3...and the adcom loves to remind people of this. I went to an info session last month and almost got sick of hearing it.

And Chapel Hill is an absolutely beautiful place to live. The people here are wonderful, too!

That's because they're a state school and they're required to keep 82% of their student body from in state or they lose state funding. Given that you're at NC State, you should be very familiar with the state higher education funding crisis in NC.

They considered raising the out of state student cap but the idea went down in flames.

UNC (as an undergraduate institution) gets 18k+ applicants every year. Of those applicants, ~2/3 are out of state applicants, and on top of that, they're required to maintain the 82% in-state quota. So yes, it's hard to get in as an out-of-state student.

Apply! I am from out of state (california), so I know that it is possible! I had very high pcat scores, but I had an average gpa, so there you go. I go to a good school, had research and volunteer work, and had a good interview.... so if you are a strong candidate and are set on it, you definetly have a shot.

A good amount of people at my interview were from out of state, and they definetly fill up to the 18% with out of state. Maybe I got lucky, because I really had my heart set on it. As far as I am concerned it is a beautiful town with a great program and exactly the type of clinical practice opportunities and hands on course work that I was looking for, so I chose it over all the california schools. PM me if you want any more info. It's a fantastic school and a pretty simple application, so absolutely go for it if you are interested!
