I also emailed for July 7 but have not heard back.

The guy has been out of town, he emailed me back yesterday (Saturday). I asked him if I could do recertification since I'm current with basic heartsaver CPR from being in AED. He said that any roughly equivalent course is fine, but I'm going to recertify since mine expires at the end of the year. By the way, if you want a comprehensive history of OUHSC, check out the big special in Sunday's Daily Oklahoman. There really isn't much mention of OUCOM though, except that it and a few old hospitals comprised the rinky dink campus before the changes started in the 1960s. However, in typical Daily Oklahoman style, there are articles about how dental hygiensts and nurses are the way of the future.

Yes, I got a reply back on Saturday too and will be in the July 7 class. I am also taking the class for recertification, mine expires in January.

Ha ha, I read it this morning. Pretty funny story for you guys. Went to the doctor for the TB test, hep shots, etc. the nurse asked if these tests were for school, I said "Yes, medical school." She then says "Oh, you're going to be a medical assisstant, that's wonderful." So, I don't correct her and she keeps going. "How long is the program there at OU?" I say 4 years. "Oh, so you're going to be an RN, then?" Grrrrrrrrr.

Anyways, this is a question for the guys that just finished their first year. What's the policy for missing exam blocks? Obviously, it'd be best not to miss, but, I'm feeling a lot of pressure from my undergrad university to attend a conference that falls on the dates of one of the exam blocks. I'm thinking it's going to be too much of a hassle, but I'd like to hear your thoughts. Thanks.

glad to be back on sdn after a long absence - hope all of you are having a good summer! just a few quick ?'s - what do we do if we're already certified? i'm assuming just take our certification card by the dean's office before classes start? also was just wondering if there are any other out-of-staters on here, and if any of you play golf? i'm back home in MI right now - but i'd definitely love to get a few rounds in when i get back at the end of july - looking forward to meeting all of you!

Policy for exam block-don't miss if you can help it. I don't think that you can get excused for a conference (at least not by every instructor). It all depends on the individual instructor. I'm pretty sure that they will make you take a written version of the test if they let you out of taking it in the first place. I haven't done one of these, but I imagine that they suck. I would contact Drs Chung, Unger, Rada, and E. Micheal Smith to find out for sure.

Correct. If current, just get a copy to to the deans office.
I suck at golf.

Does anyone know if we need to send OUCOM a final transcript?

I forgot one more thing-your classmates will be pissed if you miss the test. You'll delay the posting of grades, exam keys, etc. There's nothing worse than a bunch of nerds who want to know how they did on the exam.

You may think that being mistaken as a future nursing student is bad...but anytime I mention that I just graduated to someone I don't know, they say " OH that's great, so now where are you going to college?" Ugh!! I also volunteer at a middle school once a week and one time one of the teachers was yelling at me and the student I was with to "be quiet kids" "and that all kids needed to sit down" for the assembly we were attending... She thought I was a middle schooler!!! They say that looking young will be a good thing one day....I keep waiting... :)

cricket, that's pretty funny,

The bars ALWAYS stare at my ID for like an hour and then endup asking me for a second ID... A few weeks ago i went to see a concert at a local bar, but it ended up being a different night. The guy at the door told me it was the wrong day, but then he said "But you know, its a bar anyways, you'd have to be 21 to see the concert". duh! geeeeezzz...

Sounds like you do have it worse. Although, I did get ID'd at Blockbuster the other day for trying to rent an R rated movie. I had to go out to the car and get my license. That wasn't fun.

Amen. Unlike most undergrad classes, where you might not find out your grades for awhile, many med school instructors will post the answer keys almost immediately after the exam, that is unless somebody doesn't show up to take the test. In addition, some of the professors will let the entire class know who didn't show, and essentially let the lions feed. I wasn't ever brave enough to miss even one test, and I wouldn't want to be the person who planned on missing an entire block (3-5 tests) for anything short of their own death.

Bottom line, there is plenty of time in your medical career for other things. Test blocks are the time to take tests and nothing else except maybe a sandwich and a few hours of sleep now and then.

By the way, it's nice to have all the school threads lumped together in a short forum, to avoid having to surf through multiple pages.

Oh yeah, after 29 years of crooked teeth, I'm finally getting braces tomorrow. I'm sure some of you on here have some good stories, if you'd care to share.

The day you'll get your braces off will be awesome. I remember thinking that my teeth never felt so smooth! :p

First thing I did after getting them off was eat an entire bag of Cheetos

mmm...cheetos.....

For a time his favorite snack was Cheetos, and when that ran out, Saddam would "get grumpy," the story said. One day, guards substituted Doritos corn chips, and Saddam forgot about Cheetos. "He'd eat a family size bag of Doritos in 10 minutes," Dawson said. <AP>

aren't we all one big happy family? :)

hey do u guys plan to get a gym membership? or do you plan to use the free workout room @ the student center?

too bad there're no studio or kicking/punching bag at the free workout room =( hey any of you guys interested in a weekly pick-up soccer games (or bball/ football)?

Things like that aren't too hard to get done at the HSC. Sometimes all a student has to do is ask, and "ye shall receive". Examples include the Univ. Village apts., the new coffee shop in the union, and the entire 3rd floor of the union.

A punching bag shouldn't be too tough to get.

Any suggestions Sharp? (i.e. - sic Nigam on them or what? At least it would keep him from kicking **** in the mod)

hey man, i can get it myself, no need to ask HSC for it, it's not like they're my sugar momma or somethin' ;) but it'll be nice though to have a sugar momma, ask kevin ferderline, that dude is driving a 200,000 ferari

~ no need to infer that i will kick "****" in the mod. i never use my martial arts skills uselessly... i only use it for sparring as a sport (on the penn team), stress relieve, self-defense, or protecting someone helpless or someone i care about from harm (which I have done before in west philly)...

come to think of it, if i need to kick anything in the mod, it'll be a fly or something, this way i can save money on getting a fly swatter.

here's the info on a DS surgery game, pretty cool huh?: http://www.gamespot.com/ds/action/traumacenter/preview_6127863.html?tag=boxcar_all_preview_headline

I was just wondering if anybody is living at the Aberdeen next year. I just signed a lease there the other day. :)

Good luck with the braces OUdoc08, I was blessed not to need them but I can't imagine they would be very fun.

And Cricket09, I hope you don't have any trouble getting into the bars next year. That would really suck.

Oudoc is referring to a guy in our mod who likes to kick stuff/leave trash everywhere.

There is going to be a group of med students going to see War of the Worlds on friday if any of you are interested PM me.

Nah. A little wiry dude in our mod that's like 35 pounds soaking wet that collects empty pop bottles, trash, and other various whatnotsits, and perches on his desk like a vulture waiting to attack his prey.

Adam, do you remember the Nigam haiku?

wow that's rough, oudoc, how did you guys survived with him in the mod? didn't the trash stink it up everywhere?

:barf:

lfesiam said:

:barf:

It wasn't nasty trash, just a rapid accumulation of papers, sacks, food containers, pop bottles, etc. etc. etc.

I asked Ad_Sharp about the haiku we wrote about him. It was funny, something about a rapidly spreading fungus taking over the mod, as the desks around his tended to be consumed by the spreading mass.

Mine was across from his, and as I didn't go to class often, I would come into the mod to find that my desk, as well as several others had been infected with the spreading fungus,

My feelings about braces.

#1, they suck.
#2, the impressions they make of your mouth with the plaster goo, sucks.
#3, my first tightening is scheduled around the first week of school, which, as you probably guessed, sucks.
#4, the night before I had them put on, my wife bought me a King Size Snickers bar, which she so kindly put in the freezer for me. I forgot to eat it until after I got the braces on. The fact that I can't eat my delicious, frozen, peanut laden, chocolate covered, caramel injected Snickers, SUCKS!!!

Okay, all you wannabe docs out there, here's a case for you.

After I had my metalmouth installed yesterday morning, I came home, got nauseated, puked twice, curled up in my recliner with a blanket, shivered, found out I had a temp of 101.5, and slept the rest of the day. After waking the next day (this morning), I've since felt fine, no fever, etc.

Since school has been out, I've had all 4 of my wisdom teeth cut out, two root canals, and 3 cavities filled without problems. Any ideas how the acute illness above could possibly be related to placement of braces?

Yep, that's it-definately a case of genital warts.

So I guess this guy is just kind of a minor annoyance, but are there very many major problems with people in a mod not getting along? Can you change mods if that's the case or are you just stuck with it? How are mods determined? How much time do you actually spend with your mod? And can I get another question into this post? :)

First off, mods are the best thing since nintendo. I love my mod. Our sloppy friend doesn't cause any resentment. Most of us just think that it's funny. I haven't heard of a single person who wanted to change mods in any mod. Mods are determined by the alphabet. I think that they would move you if you really wanted it. The amount of time that you spend in the mod that is required is minimal. Time is mostly a personal choice.

Otherwise, no clue.

Ever since I got accepted people ask me for medical advice, and as I've told so many of my friends and relatives, ask me in four years. :p

i have a feeling that about 25%-50% of medstudents at OU are married..is it just me?

heh, i'm not quite there yet....can't even think about it right now.

Probably close to 25%. We're still the minority-but we do get to have sex regularly unlike most of our unmarried classmates :p :D

So I'm just beginning my quest to find my home for the next year (I know, I'm a procrastinator) and was wondering if there are any suggestions. I have a friend in nursing school who suggested Deep Deuce...is that close to the HSC? Is there a certain complex where a lot of med students live? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks for the help!
Maybe if first year students could make a list of where they're living if you have already signed a lease?

I lived at Warwick West for the 1st semester before I bought my house. A few others live there. It's about ten minutes from campus, but located in a good part of town (NW Expressway just after May Ave).

The Deep Deuce are close and easy, but they are freakin expensive!! I thought about living there but then my super generous grandparents decided that they wanted to buy me a condo (gotta love grandparents  ). So now I'll be living in an edition called "Six Thousand Penn" directly north of Penn square mall. Its a bit further, but its all highway and not that long of a commute. I would suggest checkin out The Aberdeen, I have a couple of friends who are living there and its nice and reasonably priced.

There's 6 out of 17 or18 of us in our mod that are married. I'd estimate that to be a little on the high side for the x-sec avg., and would estimate the rate to be apx. 25%. I'd also say that even though several are married, there are only a handful with kids. I can off the top of my head, think of only 3 or 4 other students besides myself who have kids.

wassup everyone. man i havent been on this forum for awhile and find out that it moved.
just wanted to say hope everyone is doing well and getting really excited about starting school in less than 2 months.
im in chicago right now working at some conference on medicine for high schoolers until mid july. 1st time in chicago and its a great city. i was talking to a cardiothoracic surgeon today from chicago and told him i was going to OU med and he spoke very highly of the curriculum at ou and said that ou was one of 1st schools to have like independent type courses or something (dont remember really what he said, but it was good).

everyone enjoy the next month and half of free time.

Does anyone know what dress attire is expected for the White Coat Ceremony? buiness, sunday, formal..? The invitation didn't specify.

Does anyone know OU's 2009 MS1 class schedule? I've looked around on their website, but haven't had any luck. I'm wondering what the class hours will be each day.

You'll receive a detailed schedule in the mail something like a month before class starts You won't find it on the OU website, in fact, they're probably still working out the final details, but it will be posted on Hippocrates when it's done. You can check the homepage at hippocrates.ouhsc.edu to see when the new schedule is out (I don't think you'll be able to access it w/o a password). It still shows a spring 2005 MSI calendar as of now, but when it changes to Fall 2006, you'll know it's out, and on it's way snail mail to you.
Each day's class hours are different. Some days you're there from 8:00 to 5:00, other days you might only have class for 2 hours. Occasionally, you have a day w/o any class. The only thing that's consistent in 1st semester is, you'll have anatomy lab on every other lab session (every fourth class day - ex. Mon. and Fri. one week, then Wed. the next, then Mon. and Fri. again, etc.) That only changes around test block time and the prep week before each block week.

I liked the variablilty, as it prevented things from getting too monotonous, and all it required was a schedule check everyday to see what you were doing the next.

As far as your other question about dress for the W/C ceremony, it's essentially nice clinical dress, for ex. suit or shirt/tie for the guys, nice dress or dress slacks/blouse for the girls.
