University of Oklahoma COP Class of 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got an interview for Feb 27 but I am not sure if I will go. I already got accepted to a school closer to home and I also have an interview the same day (Iowa though since I got accepted to a different school I am not sure I will attend that one either)

it wouldn't hurt then to check it out, either school. i mean you're going to pay a lot in tution so i wouldn't mind spending the little extra to see if you like another school better. you'll be surprise sometimes if you go out of your comfort zone. it's going to be at least 3 (if you in the accelerated program) or 4 years of your life.

I got my interview invite today, too. I am very surprised considering it is a public school with rich history. Any advice for the interview, I will be forever grateful! I am excited and I hope to get in, too!

check out the interview feedback section. some people say the questions were very similar to their interview questions but there are some people who say they got different questions. it doesn't hurt to look though.

I just learned of this Interview Feedback. Thanks!

I have a question about out of state tuition. I couldn't find a direct "this is the tuition for pharmacy school" on the website so I went to the link to the Bursar's Office. It said it was $7,341.00 for spring 2010 (and comparable for fall 2009). There was also a list of fees. But is tuition really $15,000/year for out of state? That seems really cheap. Or are there a ton of fees that make it a lot more expensive.

By the time you pay all the fees you are looking at about $30,000 a year I believe. I am a P-2 at OU but I pay in state tuition so I am not exactly sure.

I think you missed the fine print on the out-of-state page. It says to determine the tuition for OOS student, you combine that 6k in-state tuition with the 7k OOS tuition, meaning 13k a semester which then means about 26k a year (I didn't calculate random fees in, whatever they may be).

My question to OOS students...How hard is it to obtain residency status? I was reading on OU's page about residency saying part of the requirement of obtaining residency was indefinitely stay in the state????

I'm a P2 out of state. Yes you combine in state and out of state tuition. My spring 2010 tuition including fees comes out to $16,378.70 so times that by 2 would give you about $32,757.40 a year. It's actually cheaper than some instate California pharmacy school tuitions so I'm actually saving money paying out of state tuition here.

As for getting resident status, it's really hard. Even if you get a house it'll be hard. It'll help in trying to get it but it's not enough alone. You have to be living in Oklahoma for at least a year working and not doing pharmacy related things to have a chance or marry someone who is an Oklahoma resident but even that is no guarantee. Basically count on not getting resident status while a student.

Phewww.. just got my acceptance letter to LECOM-Erie (3 year program) which was my first choice. Looks like my days in Oklahoma are numbered.... So much for horrible ice storms in January.

I'm sad to hear that it's hard to obtain residency, but I suppose I'm a bit comforted by the fact that it is still cheaper than some CA schools as an in-state. I am super happy that housing on OK is way cheaper than CA. I still think OU is a great school so I hope to get in.

For currents students, how do you like the school and the curriculum? How are the classes taught? This school has two campuses, does that make studying and classes more difficult? Thanks everyone!

About the tuition - oops. Guess I didn't read it well enough

I declined my interview. I have an interview for Iowa on the same day and I decided to go to that one instead.
I hope someone else gets my interview spot.

Good luck to everyone!!

I've been reading this forum for a while and decided it was finally time to post. 🙂
I've been accepted to OU, but I was wondering if there were any current students out there who would be willing to share their opinion of the school...atmosphere, curriculum, likes, dislikes, etc? Also, are you required to complete the P4 rotations in Oklahoma, or can those be done out of state? I was really impressed by the school on my interview day, but I just want to make sure I choose the school that is right for me. Thanks!

Can anyone tell me what the campus is like? Are the lecture halls and lab rooms very modern?

I wouldn't say outdated, but I have seen more modern? We have big screens that display the lecturer and the other campus (if you don't know we have two campuses that video link in real-time for each lecture). We press buttons to turn on mics when we want to ask questions or to answer questions which makes the camera zoom on you and you'll be on the big screen then.

Wang...^_^ it's a small technological world (I do remember reading your posts pre-pharmacy tho!).

I may be biased, but I have truly enjoyed the education I've received at OU. We are given plenty of opportunities to gain experience at different pharmacies (I've had month long work sites at Target, Walmart, Walgreens, Reasors, Drug Warehouse, 2 independent pharmacies and additional day experiences at hospitals and speciality pharmacies [eg. nuclear]). I feel like I have a good feel of the retail world, which is one positive aspect since that encompasses most pharmaceutical positions. I entered pharmacy school with little experience besides a year of volunteer work at a nonprofit clinic. I am a P2 and feel much more confident now when I do go to my sites, because of the education that I have been provided. I found that OU did a great job at making sure all students understood the essentials of pharmacy during the first year (as painstaking as it was for those with experience to have to relearn and be tested on things ;-)

The curriculum is fair - there are those professors you will love and those you will hate. But the best part is that the students are supportive of each other and really want to see each other do well. We email out notes/charts to the entire class just to share things we've put together. The upperclassmen did a lot of help me transition from P1 to P2 year. The experience would have been different if that atmosphere was not there.

What I find is that there are plenty of opportunities to be involved with student activities and make changes. Last year, OU created student focus groups that allowed students to express their concerns (without faculty/administrators in the room). The student leaders took all of the comments, created reports, and presented them to the entire OU staff/faculty/etc as a panel. This eventually led to actual changes at the school. I recognize the fact that OU is responsive to the needs of the students and is willing to work with them if situations are presented in a professional manner. The concept of student led focus groups is a unique program to OU. When other pharmacy schools heard about this, they showed interest in doing the same thing.

Another event that I enjoy is pharmacy month, which is held in October. OU truly does a phenomenal job in promoting the profession of pharmacy to the students, including those in other medical professions, and it is all student led. I know that the OKC campus networks quite a bit with the other medical colleges, which is a great way to build connections. OUHSC is one of only four comprehensive academic health centers in the nation with seven professional schools on one campus. It's important to remember that the curriculum is going to be similar at all pharmacy schools, so think about what you're looking for beyond the learning experience. Create some good memories and don't just let the 4 years fly by.

True!

A month from your interview date, you will hear of your decision.

I actually got an Email Sunday and official Letter today verifying I got in from the 27th interviews..... So 8 days for me.

i received the email today..and got waitlisted..darn it 🙁 i interviewed on feb 27 also

Did your email say that there were no spots in P1 left? I thought it was very weird.

Same. I wonder how many people from that interview date got waitlisted and what our chances are now...

I got the good news yesterday morning. Question: Is there a FB page or somewhere in which the class can get in contact with each other?
Good luck to those still waiting!

Just look up OU Pharmacy (OU-COP) for the class of 2014 in the search. It should pop right up.

Hi, I interviewed on the 27th also and haven't even received an e-mail yet. Am I the only one? This is driving me nuts.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy, am I the only one who knows about the story of an applicant who made a big F-UP this year in Oklahoma?

I'm gonna make it it's own topic so people don't make the same mistake he made.

Meh, I made a topic about it but it got derailed. Just look for the most recently locked thread for more info.

By the way to you OU applicants, are any of you applying to SWOSU as well? I've heard more positive things about SWOSU than OU yet the latter gets the most applicants.

LOL about SWOSU? Such as what? I go to school there and I don't know any positives of SWOSU over OU. They are years behind in technology. They don't offer any classes on nuclear or clinical pharmacy. The school is on the 3rd floor of the chemistry and physics building. They take roughly 90% of kids who only did pre req work at SWOSU. They do not have any research in the pharmacy school. I can't really think of any reason its better actually. But i guess if you would clarify on what you have heard I could tell you my opinion.

Are there Christmas/Summer breaks in the OU PharmD program? Or is there scheduled work to do during those times?

My coworker just got accepted right now, anybody else?

I'm also giving up my seat at OU as well so I think that means that one more acceptance will be given to someone soon! Good luck guys!

To current students at the OU COP:

Where is the best place to live that is close to the OUHSC? Is it safe? Do they allow pets? Cost? Any of them include utilities? Furnished? Etc...

Does anyone live at University Village, the on-campus housing? If so, please give some info.

When I went for a campus tour of the COP I didn't get the opportunity to look at the labs. Are the labs nice and updated? How many times a week do you guys have lab and for how long?

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Sorry for the late reply. I'm actually a student in the Tulsa campus so I wouldn't know the living situation exactly, but when I was applying people told me to avoid Northeast of OUHSC. Some people say it looks really bad and I guess it does in comparison to the other areas. I use to volunteer in South Central Los Angeles so it doesn't look so bad to me.

We usually only have lab once a week for about 2 hours depending how fast you are. The labs in Tulsa are ok. I seen newer and better but I also seen a lot worse.

When I went for my interview, the students said they got a Christmas break, but I'm not sure for how long... maybe a month? I didn't ask about summer breaks. As for work during those times, I don't think so based on the curriculum:

this school year our winter break started on dec 17 and ended on jan 18. there are some students however that decided to start doing their site visits beginning of january to get a head start on their site visit hours (you're required to do 100 for the school year).

summer break is may 13ish to aug 23, give or take a day or two. you wouldn't lose your summer break unless you have to retake a class or if it's your p4 year. then you might start your rotations in the summer.

unfortunately with the waitlist, you never know when you'll be called. i've had classmates that told me they were informed of their acceptance the day before classes started at ou. i've also had friends from other schools that told me they were informed of being accepted in the middle of their orientation week so they already missed some of orientation and had to move the next day across the country.

For those who are accepted, did you receive your information packet already? I remember receiving an e-mail from Jennifer Richardson saying it will be sent in the spring, but I haven't received anything.

Does anyone know what they're doing about textbooks? One of the books on the tentative list is one edition behind what's available, and I dunno I'd I should just go ahead and buy the newer one. Or are most people going to wait to buy books?

Does anyone have a plan for dresscode on days of orientation (including Tuesday's OU-TULSA orientation) and class?
