Hi! I was accepted to the University of Pittsburgh OTD program last week and was wondering if anybody else has too. I'm not from Pittsburgh and would like to know more about the area and the program from anyone who goes there right now. I appreciate any advice!

Hi! Congratulations! I’m a first year OTD student at Pitt. I love it here. The faculty are AMAZING (seriously, they used to write some of the questions for the boards exam we have to take.) They are very approachable and accomadating. They really know what they’re teaching us at Pitt and I can already tell it’s going to make me an amazing OT.
I lived in Pittsburgh all my life so I’m very familiar with the area. Our program just moved from Oakland to south side. It’s in the same building as the PT program now. Let me tell you, the view is amazing and our new space is soooo nice.
Let me know if you have any specific questions!

Where are the safe places to live in Pittsburgh? How was the transition to grad school from undergrad? I heard that it is quite the change!

There are a lot of places to live close to our building. A lot of people in the program live in Shadyside, squirrel hill, and Oakland! I live with my parents about 20 minutes away.
Honestly, be prepared to be tired at first and you may have nights where you fall asleep with the lights on while studying anatomy powerpoints LOL. You'll have to study anatomy a lot just to keep up with it! We go over muscles action, origin, insertion and innervations and lecture material for exams. All the exams are fair, nothing that's horribly challenging.
My undergrad major was pretty tough but grad school is just a lot of information at once. it's fine though!!!

I also heard that Southside was a good area right across the river? I'm sure I will be very tired at first! My undergrad major wasn't too difficult so I am nervous that grad school is going to be quite a challenge at first. I am very excited for it but it is also nerve-wracking! Thank you for answering my questions!

Southside, shadyside, squirrel hill are good places to live if you want to stay close to the school. The OTD building is in the southside, so that would make things super convenient.

Thank you!! I'm from the south so moving up to Pittsburgh is making me very nervous. Since the program starts in early June, is there a break between the summer term and the fall term? Will I need a car to get around the area, or do people mainly just use public transportation? Also, does Pitt's program offer any scholarships or financial aid to their first year OTD students? I'll be paying out of state tuition so that's something I'm very concerned about.

It will be okay! I understand that new changes can be scary sometimes but you will be okay. Everyone is very welcoming in this program.
We had about two weeks off. We went June 4-August 9 and went back for fall term August 27.
A lot of people either walk or take a shuttle to our building! There is also a parking garage next to our building. It is $65 a month for a parking lease.
I’m not sure about scholarships or financial aid you’d have to email the program and ask, sorry!
