Thanks. Not exactly sure yet. I'll have the weekend to think about it. I think it's mostly going to come down to money as the cost of attending my state school will be significantly less.

Ya thats definitely a tough choice. Pitt is a great school, but is it worth an additional $50-$100k over four years? Most people would say no, but you gotta make that decision for yourself. 🙂

I got in off the waitlist 6/2 (phonecall). I was on the "lower tier" waitlist according to my original waitlist letter. Since getting put on the waitlist in Feb. I sent in another LOR, several update letters, LOI, and the student I stayed with when interviewing also wrote a letter. I have a strong research background in an area where pitt is strong in which also helped.

This is my second year applying (and would have been last), and is my first acceptance - it still hasn't sank in completely that I've made it. Good luck guys, this has been an incredibly difficult three years since I started this process by studying for MCATs. Hang in there - the waitlist IS moving!

Congratulations! Your story shows that sometimes you just have to be patient. I hope that you take a few days to enjoy the rush that comes with that acceptance. Pitt is a great school and Pittsburgh is a good place to live. Best of luck with your studies. We are all so happy for you.

I got a vague e-mail this afternoon after sending an update about taking gross anatomy at a med-school during the summer.

Paula wrote me back to say that they've "handed out only a handful of acceptances from the waitlist, and as of now the class is pretty firm."

She added that she was glad I was doing so well in the course (got an A in the first two parts, on head and neck now), and she just wanted me to know how things stood "for now".

So, more of the vaguery, meaning there's still movement, albeit minor. It ain't over til it's over though.

I don't think the waitlist is going to move much anymore. I received a letter in April saying "I am confident that your application will meet eventual success", or something along those lines. Last week I was told to "go ahead and makes plans for another school", because Pitt's class is very firm and the waitlist is unlikely to move more than just a couple people. Oh well, I'm staying in CA!

Hey people - I get the impression when talking to AdCom members like Paula, etc, that if you didn't get in by that first week or so of June, you're not getting in this time around. 😱

Seriously - look at this post - nothing has moved really since then at all. Neither has the class according to Paula. In her words, the class is "pretty firm". 😳

Better luck next time to all of us, barring a sudden miracle that some kid gets jungle fever and a spot opens up. Fat chance. 👍

Hi everyone! I actually recently joined SDN in order to let all you crazy premeds know that the waitlist IS still moving (inching, crawling), but I only found this thread today (computer AND message board-******ed). I was accepted to Pitt off the waitlist last Friday, aka 7/7. I live in Germany, so my Dad was actually the one to get the happy news -- he got a phone call. I was on the lower tier "hope" waitlist and had actually been gearing up to send in all my nearly-completed German med school applications for fall of 2006, so thank you Paula for saving me about 200€. Oh, and changing my life. That too.

Anyway, good luck to all the rest of you!

I just got the call this morning! WAHOO! Im sooo excited. 😀

Now i have to figure out if i can shell out $$$ vs going to my state school.

Welcome aboard. Good luck making the financial decision; it's a tough one, no doubt. I think this is the budget they list for out of state students:

Tuition $ 36,958
Fees $ 650
Health Insurance $ 2,230
Books & Supplies $ 2,000
Rent/Food/Personal/
Transportation $ 15,000
Total Estimated Cost $ 56,958

The maximum federal loan this year, I think, is around 42k...so if you're willing to take government loans and then find ways to either a)trim the Rent/Food/Personal/Transportation budget or b) find private funding or c) trip over a bag of money, it's difficult but doable.

Congrads.!!! I bet you are very excited. About the money, they gave me a good package so don't stress to much. If money is a big factor see how much you get and then decide, if you can. But from reading your previous post it seems like you really love Pitt and if you love a school as much as you do and think it offers you something that your state school will not then don;t worry about the money because it will come..eventually 🙂 . And I am sure something is sure to work out. Goodluck with your decision.

ETA: as far as the $15,000 for rent/food personal goes. The bus is free for students and there are nice/safe/cute neighborhoods where you can rent for say $500/month. Food here is as reasonable as anyplace. So, I think $15,000 is a bit inflated. There's no need to live right in Oakland. Pittsburgh's a cheap city. I think you'll be fine.

Also: when you say you hounded admissions: what exactly did you do? could you give us future waitlisters (well, hopefully I'll get an interview anyway...) any tips?

One of the nice parts about Pittsburgh is that our cost of living is relatively low. If you choose to live off campus, you won't necessarily have to pay through the nose. When I was living in D.C., I shelled out $550/month for an efficiency; here I have a 2BR w/ security system, central air, off-street parking, and W/D in the unit for $650/month + utilities.

i hounded admissions by sending update letters if there was something to update. Also, I basically sent a letter of interest/intent every 2-3weeks directly to the assistant dean of admissions. She basically knew who i was by the end. lol
