I applied to UTSW last year, was granted an interview and ultimately accepted in June. It was my favorite of the UT Schools that I interviewed at (the others being UTMB and UT-Houston). I ranked UTSW 1st but matched to UTMB which I ranked 3rd. Not sure if this matters to you but I thought I would throw it in there.
I was a little apprehensive when I interviewed there as I had heard some rumors about the school being really cutthroat and competitive...2 things I was not looking for in a medical school. I happened to bump into a first year that I knew from high school, and she told me that while every school has it's share of gunners that most people are pretty normal...I have heard that UTSW puts a lot of emphasis on numbers as far as application screenings are concerned (more so than other Texas schools, and this was corroborated by the fact that I was invited to interview BEFORE I even submitted my secondary!) At lunch however I was comforted to learn that one of the students was well into his 30s and admitted to having mediocre at best GPA and MCAT scores (and he was not a URM if that is the first thought that jumped into your head). So while that may just be anectodal evidence, there is some proof that numbers aren't everything.
The school was pretty nice, kind of in a middle of nowhere area (nothing like UT-Houston or Baylor in the TMC) but students were able to work with several fantastic institutions like Dallas Children's Hospital (a private hospital, I believe) and Parkland Memorial Hospital (a huge public "ER style" hospital that has the distinction of having the largest number of deliveries of any hospital in the United States...a plus if you are considering obstetrics, etc.) I was also assured (tongue in cheek) that if I didn't know Spanish when I came, I would by the time that I left!
They just opened a really cool fitness/student center on the campus (not sure if that matters, but just a random fact) and it was cool to see that as our interview day ended a TON of the med students were there watching UT-OU Game...nice to know that students have some time for diversion and aren't buried in a book 24-7.
All in all, liked the school, liked the curriculum, liked the price. Why didn't I go? I already accepted and deferred to go abroad at another school. If I had matched to UTSW in February, I would be going there next year instead of somewhere else.
Hope this helps.
