I applied to the Toledo MSBS program in April, and I think the admissions committee will begin reviewing applications this week. I haven't seen much information about this program on sdn this year. Has anyone else applied to Toledo SMP?

Hey dubie

I'm a student at the university of Toledo. Please let me know if you have any questions about the school or the msbs program. I haven't seen much commentary this year about the msbs program either. Hopefully some people will reply and keep you company in the waiting game.

hey regulatero,

thanks for replying. i'll definitely pm you with some questions. i guess no one else is applying this year ha

i did some research on the program, so if you have some questions i may be able to answer. i made a spreadsheet thats posted somewhere on here...

I think that while they start reviewing applications the first week of June, decisions will not made until the end of June, first week of July. Therefore, I am guessing people won't hear back until after July 4th weekend. I really hope people won't have to wait that long, but who knows. Good luck.

Please post your findings- How hard to get into this program? What the scholl looking for? How many will make to med school etc? Thank you

It doesn't seem like too many people applied this year given the feeble response on SDN. I also have heard that acceptances are going to be given out late this year compared to last year.

According to one of the administrators the program is very competitive to get into. A good number at least 65% make it into the UT med school.

I'm a 3rd year student. Let me know if you have anymore questions I can help with, particularly about how things work here once you are here.

If anyone gets an acceptance post it on here so everyone else knows whats going on with the program this year.

Hey all,

I applied to this program. I don't think we're hearing back till the end of the month/beginning of July. Any info anyone has would be helpful!

Hey guys, haven't posted on here in a while since I've been busy, but I got accepted to this program last year (I'm at a different SMP right now). I submitted everything by May and didn't hear back until the middle, end of June. The impression that I got is that they don't really review your application until June because everyone in the office is busy or on vacation. You'll probably get an e-mail a month before orientation starts. Generally, you have a pretty good chance of getting accepted, as long as you meet their average requirements (which I believe was supposed to be 3.5 GPA and 27 MCAT).

As far as I'm aware, they have a pretty good linkage - I think you're almost guaranteed an acceptance to their med school as long as you pull off a 3.5 while in the SMP program. When I interviewed at Toledo this year, I met a lot of medical students who graduated from the MSBS program and they were our student tour guides and on the welcoming committee.

Toledo is kind of a small town and the medical school campus is located in a somewhat rural region, but I thought the medical school facility was very nice and it was somewhat of a hidden gem in terms of location. The tuition is very cheap and cost of living is the lowest of any school in Ohio (a very nice 2 bed apartment around there goes for about $500 / month). The undergrad campus was located about 2 miles away plus there were also several malls and nice restaurants within driving distance of the med school.

Anyway, feel free to post any questions that you may have about location or housing and I'll try to answer them since I'll be in toledo this summer.

How were you notified of your acceptance from Toledo?

I think most people on SDN would tell you Georgetown >>> Drexel > Toledo, but it all kind of depends on what you want. There are a lot of factors to consider including location, cost etc. A lot of threads about the other schools are out there too so that should be helpful.

I forgot to mention congratulations! I was noticing your stats. With those stats you should probably be able to get in without an SMP to at least a DO school esp if you apply early. Let us know what you decide on

They notified me by email this morning. I applied ~May when they start accepting applications.🙂

Thanks! I applied quite early the last cycle but quite late for DO schools...Got waitlisted in one DO schools but no love from any MD schools (me from Cali...🙁) One of the problem may due to my C in orgo but I took post-bacc and got A's in grad level Bio classes..I should have orgo retaken but I didn't..that's why SMP is my best shot if I wanna to reapply...

I have read those review threads and each SMP seem to have unique pros like guarantee interview, 1 year term... I've talked to staff at Drexel and she told me it's better to wait for one cycle so that I have grades from SMP to show my improvements...tha's why it's kinda hard for me to pick one 😕

Oh ok I got you. Keep reading on the forums eccool and I hope the right choice comes to you

I got admitted to Toledo MSBS yesterday. 30 MCAT, 3.0 BCPM Gpa, 3.5 overall GPA. I like the program a lot, but I was wondering if any current students or alumni might be able to provide some more information on it. That would be much appreciated.

Hi RedWings--do you remember when your application became official? Oh, and congrats 🙂

Hi, and thanks! I got the email saying that my app was complete on May 4th..I actually submitted it pretty close to the May 1st deadline (like a day or two prior). Hope that helps.

Thanks! My application didn't get verified until April, but I'll post if I get in 🙂

Congrats again to everyone who got in, and goodluck to those of you still waiting :luck:. Again let me know if you have any questions about UT MSBS or UTCOM (I'm a current student). I have a lot of giving back to do on these forums from years of lurking 😀

Thanks! My application didn't get verified until April, but I'll post if I get in 🙂

I just got accepted for MSBS at UT. Please let me know if anybody interested in sharing apartment - Male, Non-smoker, No pets. Thank you

I was accepted today! I am looking for a roommate. If you are a female and are interested PM me so we can talk about potentially being roommates. I am thinking of sharing a 2 bed / 2 bath with someone.

Did they email you? I'm still waiting...🙁

Got accepted a few days ago, still trying to make a decision. I spoke to Dr. Bennet-Clark for a while and one of the MSBS students. I got the vibe that everyone is very happy here...but I'm OOS so this is slowing things down for me. Any pros/cons to share?
Thanks

Just called the MSBS office, and the admissions committee will be meeting again next Tuesday. Good luck to everyone!

Goodluck to everyone who hasn't heard yet. Let me know if you have any questions about UTCOM or MSBS

I was searching for a facebook or group website and found this thread. I was accepted into the program on the 17th. Congrats to my future classmates! Does anyone know if there is a facebook group or something we can all get together on?

Might be helpful for finding roommates, study groups, activities, etc.

Hi everyone! I was just accepted into the program--looks like the second round of folks will be receiving emails early next week once Christine Wile is back in the office 🙂

Let me know if anyone finds a fb group. If not, I can create one 😀

I called the office yesterday and found out I was accepted as well. I was just wondering what ppl have heard about the numbers getting into Toledo's medical school or other schools after the progam. I've heard from several ppl that 29 ppl from last year's class have gotten in and that usually a large number of ppl do.

Also, does anyone know how they grade us? If it's medical school classes we're taking, isn't it pass fail for them?

Just created the facebook group "University of Toledo MSBS 2010-2011." I left the group open, so feel free to join and make your own 🙂 Like timmyk465 said we can use it to find roommates, form study groups, or social stuff.

Enjoy!

Hey guys and gals, quick questions for anyone whose done the program

1. what is summer research project and what is expected? a paper, poster?

2. How do-able is the curriculum? it looks like we take 11 med credits in fall and 6 in spring with other grad classes added on?

Congratulations to all of those who have received their acceptances!

I am still waiting to hear back; it makes me feel a little better that the next round of decisions are going out next week, so hopefully I'll know then. I'm glad I found this posting.

If you guys have questions about Toledo or the surrounding areas, feel free to ask me (I know other people have offered too). I grew up only an hour away and have been living in Toledo for the past 5 years (I did my undergraduate degree at the University of Toledo).

I wish you all the best in your upcoming semester and I hope that I will be another classmate of yours.

Ps. Someone brought up the area around Toledo. Toledo has some sketchy parts, but the campuses are all safe and anything west of main campus can be considered safe (don't go too far East, unless you're driving downtown). Some of the apartments around the medical campus can be sketchy so I would recommend you visit the apartment a couple of times before you commit to one. It's really just the decision of whether you want to be able to walk to classes each morning or need to drive (or take the bus).

If anyone finds a thread for current Toledo medical students, please post 🙂 I'm trying to find out if there are any study materials I can get started on now + any other study tips for the upcoming year's classes.

P.S. Good luck adfitzthum!

I know several people going to medical school now, either in their first year or second year of medical school. What sort of "study materials" are you wanting? Are you wanting to find books / lecture notes or something?

Edit: According to my one friend, she didn't use any books her first year; they were all either audio-lectures available for download or electronic pdfs. She apparently did not keep the electronic pdf files but may have the audio files downloaded still. If I can get these, I'll post them on my ftp server.

Edit2: She said the audio files are practically useless without the pdfs too. I'll see if I can get them from someone else.

Edit3: I forgot to ask, did you all apply for the MSBS - Medical Sciences program or are you doing different MSBS programs (such as Molecular and Cellular Biology, Orthopaedic Science, etc).

Hey guys,

Just accepted to the program and have committed to start in the fall. I'm going to be looking for a one or two male roommates (depending on what apartment we find) to look for an apt with starting in August. Since Toledo is a relatively inexpensive area I'd like to find a nice place around the $500-700 mark per person. If anyone is interested please messag me on here or find me on the facebook group as Francis Delvecchio (Notre Dame network).

Firstly, congratulations on your acceptance!

Secondly, you will be able to get a hell of a nice place for 500-700 dollars with roommates (If what you're saying is each contributes about that much for a total of 1000 - 1400 in rent / month). You can probably cut that in half and still find a pretty good apartment somewhere.

Hi guys, I have just been recently admitted to the UT MSBS program for 2011! Congrats to everyone else, and good luck to all of those still waiting!

this program sounds awesome... if you enroll to this program you get automatic interview? how great is that...

Out of curiosity, everyone had to apply through the apply.utoledo.edu url correct? Well, for those of you who have been accepted, did the "Application Status" change from "Complete awaiting decision" to something else? Or is it still the same for you guys?

I tried calling Dr. Bennett-Clark to check on the status of my application (I'm assuming that's who I have to call) and left a voicemail but I haven't heard back. So I'm wondering if I can use this apply.utoledo.edu as a source of information.

Hi!

My application says:
Application status: Decision Made
Decision: Applicant Acceptance

I found out June 17th that I was accepted. Hope that helps and I hope you hear good news soon! Definitely be persistent and send in a letter of intent if you haven't already!

I read somewhere that even if Carol Bennet-Clarke doesn't respond to your calls or emails, she does receive them. So keep it up!

Thanks! This is exactly what I was looking for.

I plan to call her again tomorrow and hopefully speak with her this time. Also, I'm pretty sure the letter of intent was required for the application. I could be wrong, but I think I did one. Regardless, thanks for the suggestion!

Looks like you've been quite persistent at this, adfitzthum! Try calling Dr. Bennett-Clarke first thing in the morning (just a tip, as it worked for me). In fact, I was accepted that same evening, and so I'm considering myself sort of lucky now. By the way,my stats are : MCAT 27; BPCM: 3.33; cum. GPA: 3.45. BTW, what do you guys mean by a "letter of intent"? It's definitely not the same thing that I'm thinking about.

Thanks! I'll try that on Monday. I meant to call her this morning, but I had car issues and needed to get that taken care of.

I have very similar stats. I'm not sure of the BPCM, but my MCAT was 28 and GPA was a 3.34 in bioengineering. *shrug* We'll see.

I'm pretty sure the "letter of intent" was the same thing as a "statement of purpose", pretty much outlining why you want to enroll in this program, what your future goals are, etc. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Hey guys goodluck to those still waiting and congrats for my classmates who also got in. Join the facebook group if you haven't yet, there's only four of us on it now and it's making it hard to find roommates for the coming year.

If any guys are interested in finding a two or three bedroom apartment message me on here or on facbook (francis delvecchio in the notre dame network). There looks to be some pretty nice places available at quite nice prices, and I've talked with a few different medical students there now who gave me the names of places that most students live at (i.e. the places that are actually quiet and not run-down or in shady areas).

Thanks adfitzthum! I was looking for good pre-MSBS program study materials 🙂 Since my post, I spoke with Dr. Bennett-Clarke and got the list of books for Block 1. I've also contacted several of last year's MSBS students to find out which books they suggested. MANY said not to even buy any of the books. Most all agreed, if you are going to buy books, only buy the required ones because the exams revolved around the ppts you get for each week.

BUT...any other study files you want to share, I'm definitely interested 🙂

To answer your question, I have applied to the Medical Sciences MSBS program.

Just a reminder...I created a facebook page for our class. Just search for "University of Toledo MSBS 2010-2011"
