University of Toledo MSBS 2011-2012 (SMP)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
1. If you do the SMP, and then in fact earn admission to the Toledo School of Medicine, will you qualify as an IN-state resident?

2. Do people matriculate directly from the SMP program and start that fall at the medical school?

3. What are the applicants like who finish the SMP and don't earn admission to the med school

Yes (unless you choose not to?) and yes (unless you defer).

thanks, could you tell me just to clarify, what month would you apply to the school of medicine?

You apply like everyone else, then you have your guaranteed interview in april or may, and you have a decision by the end of may--or at least that's what I was told by someone who did it this year.

Congratulations!

I've been tracking this thread since applying in March. Haven't heard anything yet but i'm hoping soon!

thank you! good luck, I am sure that you will hear something soon--they seem really on their game as compared to most schools 🙂

does anyone know the set-up information for syncing utoledo email with a droid phone? i've tried looking for it online but can't find it anywhere.

thanks!

Your best bet is to forward your Toledo email to your gmail account.

Any female need a roommate? Another girl and I found an amazing three bedroom!

Congrats for you guys that have received acceptances. My application still says complete awaiting decision. Has anyone been placed on the waiting list yet or heard if they are close to filling their class?

I'm in the same boat as you. Still haven't heard anything although my application says "complete awaiting decision."

Well everyone with acceptances has to commit by Friday, or else their spot opens up. Unless they have an extension until the 15 (I do).

Anyone have an idea how full the class is and how many spots are open?

There may be a handful of spots opening up by next Friday, I doubt I'm the only person with an extension on making a decision.

So since I got in kind of late, I was curious as to how Toledo's MSBS compares to other smp programs. specially, Drexel's IMS or Georgetown SMP if anyone knows. I already paid another deposit, but it will be simply a sunk cost if Toledo proves worth it.

Hey, yeah I got in late today also; I was really lucky to have found the program last minute. I have my own dilemma but I think the linkage at Toledo really outweighs Drexel and Georgetown. I'd say it's close between Georgetown and Toledo since Georgetown has more recognition nationwide (I wouldn't consider Drexel IMS at all) but 70%+ linkage at Toledo I think has to take the cake at the end. Just my 2 cents.

Looking over years past threads many people write that buying books is a waste of time and we should just go off the lecture notes. However, I know this changes from year to year if anyone could offer any advice and then state how well they did that would be great 🙂

I can't really offer direct advice about how useful the books are because I haven't even started the program yet...but I did take a tour with a student who had just finished his M1 year and he told me that the books were usually supplementary and a majority of exam questions would come from class notes...and he said he did great! 🙂

Also...you may have heard about this, but Toledo has some sort of "match" tradition of some sort with books...there's a room in their library where past students drop off old/used books for new students to take and use...so you may not necessarily have to spend money on getting books! Def a plus 😀

Hey everyone, I am looking for one male roommate for a place within walking/biking distance from campus. PM me if you are interested.

For Block 1, I really don't think you need any books. Essentially everything on your exams can be found in the lecture notes (the notes are very detailed). Plus, if you ever need to look something up for reference, you can always do that in the library.

For Block 3, I would recommend buying the neuroanatomy atlas. But I don't think you need the textbook there either.

For the graduate courses, you definitely don't need books, though it might help to have one for Biostats/Epi. But not necessary.

Unfortunately when it comes down to it, I simply can't afford this program, since I will be paying for med school and grad school completely by myself... 🙁 I really loved the school, curriculum, and the special attention that Dean Lane pays to students... :/ but ~$50K for out of state tuition is just not something I can do... But hopefully my spot goes to someone who will be getting a second chance to become an amazing physician one day! As for me, I'll be doing the UMich MS Physiology program and applying to Toledo for med school, so hopefully I will see some of you awesome people as M-1s! To those who I have gotten to know, keep in touch!

They are going over applications this week and I received an acceptance this week! Good luck to everyone waiting!

I got my acceptance yesterday 🙂

I wish Toledo had sent me the acceptance early -it definitely was my top choice but the waiting was insane. I have completed all sorts of paperwork for RFU and hv signed a housing contract already so I am giving up my Toledo spot. Hope you guys get the good news soon.

hi guys, does anyone know what days/times of the week we will have biochem this semester?

hi guys, does anyone know what days/times of the week we will have biochem this semester?

All I got was an e-mail saying that we'd be in class from 8-3 from August 23rd-November 2nd along with meeting dates for Biostats and Physiology. I'm sure we're going to get a way more detailed schedule at Orientation telling us when classes are really going to be and when we have exams and all.

does this program give conditional acceptance to their med school??

most schools do not give that. But the school reports that 65% of the students in the postbac get into Toledo so those are pretty decent odds

does anyone know how many students are accepted into medical school overall, including Toledo? Toledo says they don't track the acceptances other than at Toledo.

31 of the 40 in our class who went before the committee got in to UTCOM. A couple people (4 or so, maybe a few more) got acceptances elsewhere, but most matriculated to UTCOM.

where is the link for this program on their website? I can't find it online as they have several MS programs

When you apply to their MSBS, do you still have to go through AMCAS during the application season when you know that you will have an interview at the end of the year?

Yes, you have to fill out the AMCAS and fill out the secondary just like you would if you were applying regularly. Are you applying to post bac programs this year?

That is really good to know! I will be applying the spring of 2012 so I'm checking you guys out to make sure tha I have all my "ducks in a row" for next (gasp -already!) semester. Do some people in the program get interviews like normal applicants if their stats are similar to regular matriculants or do they automatically have to wait until the spring for the interview?

I hope that they keep the same secondary. I have mine written a little early. 😉

Thanks for replying. I have tons of questions about the program! 🙂

I plan to apply here in December. My stats are 3.2 cGPA and 3.13 BCMP GPA and a 26 MCAT which I will be retaking in April. What are my chances of getting into this program?

Is anybody else going to apply here for fall 2012?

Get your MCAT up, try for a 28ish or better. I think you would have a good shot (assuming you have solid EC's, LORs, research).

It will help you in the long run. From my understanding students are largely judged on their performance in the coursework, but your application does contribute to your final standing.

Yeah I am going to retake the MCAT in January. I had a low verbal score (7) so I think if I really work on this getting my score up to around 30 won't be unrealistic. I am also going to apply to EVMS, USF, and University of Cincinnati when I get back scores. Should I wait for UT or just go ahead in December and update them later?

I believe UT takes applications from March to May; you really have plenty of time. Once you're in the program you are largely judged by your coursework and research project, but the program advisor will tell you if you need to fix a deficiency in your application and that can include your MCAT score so I strongly advise that you try to get your score up a couple points at least....I think it'd be really rough to be told that you need to retake the MCAT while you're going through this curriculum.

Just wondering what kind of chances I've got at this program. I've already applied to EVMS and I'm getting ready to apply to this as soon as the applications open up. I'm not exactly sure what my gpa will be because I've gone to a couple of schools (classes in high school/transfer after 1st year) but it should be around a 3.2-3.3 cGPA, and then probably 3.0-3.1 sGPA with 2 mcat scores of 30 and 28, my verbal dropped 2 points the second time I took the exam. I've been doing research for the past year and half, volunteer frequently at several places.
Also, how many spots are available in this program? And for those that matriculate into the medical school, do they wait until after this program is done to let you know if you've gotten in or do they let you know during the year?
Thanks for any help

Does anyone know what happens to the 35% of students that don't matriculate into UT Medical School? Spending 50k seems like an awful lot of money to spend, and then be part of the 35% who do not get into UT. Perhaps some of them get into other medical schools... What do the other students do?

hey guys, i'm planning on applying to toledo's msbs next year and was wondering how science and overall gpa's are calculated, is it similar to amcas or different?

The application is closed and on the website it doesn't state anything about gpa calculations. Appreciate any feedback.
