University of Washington Class of 2014!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I prepared a list of almost 20 potential interview questions. I was asked none of them. Just be yourself and try to have a good meaningful conversation with your interviewers.

I have an interview for the 21st as well! YES! Any comments on what the interviews were like? Any sneak questions? Thanks for the help!

My interview went really well and was really relaxed, and that is pretty typical from what I heard from other applicants. If you have any lower grades or a lower section on the DAT, then they will address that. If this isn't your first application, then they will ask you what you've done since the first app. One question they have asked in the past is something like, "How do you define professionalism?" Be prepared for something like that. Also, they'll ask, "What do you want us to tell the committee about you?"

Other than that, the interview is very relaxed and mostly conversational. They just want to see that you are personal and can communicate efficiently. Hopefully you get Dr. Bordin and Dr. McFatridge for your interview. They were great!

Good luck :xf:

A question for those accepted:
Did you guys receive anything in the mail in addition to the phone call? If so, what are the conditions for final admittance? I'm hoping for an acceptance from UW and just want to make sure I have everything ironed out beforehand. Thanks!

Yeah you receive a letter in the mail and it says you need to send transcripts showing completion of a min of 3 years of baccalaureate study that show successful completion of the pre-reqs (Not sure what they mean by "successful" but probably above a 2.0). Hope this helps!

Thanks for the response! Does it say anything about immunization, FAFSA, background check, verification etc.?

nothing about immunization, and only thing about FAFSA is the deadline is feb. 15th, and it does state there will be a criminal background check.

Thanks, hopefully I get accepted before Feb 15 then!

Thanks, hopefully I get accepted before Feb 15 then!

DO NOT WAIT TO BE ACCEPTED. Fill out the FAFSA and put in UW in the code. It is best to do it this way so that way you make sure that you will be eligible for all the fin aid that you can get.

Got the acceptance call today! Really liked the school. This is going to be a very, very difficult decision. Probably will see some of you in the fall!

Congrats!!
How long did you wait after the interview to hear back from them?

My interview was November 2nd. I didn't think I'd hear from them until January at least, and also didn't think I'd hear good news. Pleasant surprise!

GPA- 3.6; DAT- 21AA/20TS/21PAT

UW really looks at the whole package from what I've heard from other dental students. Obviously the stats are a big part of the application, but UW is good about looking at your entire application.

What should I do to have a better chance to get into UW Dental? Do they like people that volunteer and do community service? How about shadowing and other things?

UW is my ideal school I want to get into, and I'm going to try my best to get in!

Of course you should do all these things to have the best chance to get into the school. They are important things for any school. In my interview, they were also really getting at why I wanted to be a dentist and how I knew I wanted to be a dentist. You should have all the experience in and knowledge about the field that you can.

Congrats on the acceptance! I had the same interview date as you, haha. Still waiting though... 🙁 Hoping for jan....

UW really likes people to do some kind of research. I worked in research after I finished my undergrad. Also, there is a non-profit group in the NW called Medical Teams International. They're a great organization that does low-cost dental work for low-income patients. I HIGHLY suggest volunteering on the mobile dental clinic. It is a fabulous experience and it will open your eyes to a different side of dentistry.

For those of you who got accepted did you already send the registration fee? I sent in the letter saying I'm accepting offer but haven't gotten anything from them about paying the fee. Is the fee also due on Jan. 14th?

On AADSAS, my status for UW says "Offer Accepted" - "Applicant responded Yes to admissions offer." Which is not the case..even though I very well may soon. Anyone else have this? Maybe in all my excitement during the phone call I responded yes to their offer. Lol.

I was wondering the same thing... The letter said that they would send us something about when to pay it and who to pay it to, but I haven't got anything yet.

I had the same thing. However, I did send in my "yes"...

And you should go to UW 👍

What other schools are you considering?

I'm currently leaning toward UW, but I'm considering UCLA. I'm a California resident, so UCLA tuition is a little cheaper and I also got a Dean's Scholarship there. But living expenses are obviously lower in Seattle, and I would be more likely to stay and practice in Washington than in California. Both are strong in research, and pretty strong clinically (especially UW). LA has nicer weather.. Ugh..

Well, considering the schools I got into were UW, Tufts, PITT, and Case....weather wasn't a factor for me  And as a WA resident, the price is right too. However, I'm leaning toward doing a Navy scholarship so price doesn't matter to me.

Remember, that the UC tuition is going up something crazy like 34%, but I'm sure that scholarship is pretty nice.

If you really are undecided, I would suggest putting the deposit down at both. The UW one is only $100...

If you wanna talk to me more about the school/area/etc., you should join the UWSOD 2014 facebook group and message me (the group admin) or just PM me. I'd be more than willing to try and help you with questions you have...

im biased b/c im currently applying to UW, but you've got to take your in-state tuition at UCLA. I would say its an equal-caliber school. Even if the price of living is higher, its way cheaper than paying out-of-state tuition at UW. Just sayin...

I definitely understand what you're saying. It's not all about money for me though. I would be happier at UW, and if I went to school there I would continue to live in Washington after graduating, whereas I'm not planning on staying in California. To complicate things, UW also has a non-resident graduate student waiver, which would waive the difference between resident and non-resident tuition after the first year. But I'm not guaranteed to get it, so I obviously can't count on it. And my girlfriend would rather go to Seattle..

Also, UC budget cuts and tuition hikes make me nervous. The 33% tuition increase is supposedly not going to happen for dental school tuition, but who knows how long that will last.

Just got the acceptance call this morning. It made my year/life, and I'm excited. Also it looks like there will be a lot of cool people in the class that I can talk baseball with ( ex: baseballjunkie). We will have to do a class Safeco field trip during the baseball season. See you all this fall.

I also received the call from Kathy this morning. I'm in!! I interviewed on the first day of interviews back in Oct., so it has felt like quite the wait. So thrilled the call finally came.

For those of you still waiting, I know it's a pain but they still have plenty of offers to make in the coming weeks, best of luck!

Congratulations, BaseDan5. I'm still holding out hope for UW. This is going to be a good year for baseball (Chone Figgins, Cliff Lee!).

Congrats guys! The waiting is killing me. I feel like they've already rejected me because I've been waiting for so long..

Seriously, Cliff Lee with Hernandez and a pitchers field is going to make playing the Mariners a hitter's nightmare. All we need is an ace reliever. Hang in there man I hope you get in.

UGH im vacationing in canada, so i cant receive their phone call if they did try to reach me. this is gonna be the longest weekend ever.

The waiting is killing me, too. I had the interview on the 21st so now I just wait...and wait....and wait. I had a slight heart attack when I saw that people got accepted this Thursday and I didn't get a phone call. UGH! But, there's still plenty of time.

Oh, the humanity!!

Does anybody know if a physics lab is required for admission? I was looking over the website and all I could fine was that they want lecture based classes and labs won't count in place of them. But that doesn't necessarily mean that labs are not required. I would love to drop my physics lab if possible because it takes up so much time.

I'm pretty sure UW requires a year of English. I just looked on the UW Dental website and it doesn't list it but here's the pre-dental advising page and 1 year English is listed: http://www.washington.edu/uaa/gateway/advising/prehealth/fields/dentistry.php

Or maybe it's just saying most schools require 1 year? I could have sworn I've heard UW needs a year.

I hope that's the case. They can't expect applicants to have completed a year of English if they don't list the requirement anywhere.

UW has fewer requirements when compared to the other dental schools. Physics lab is not required nor is a year of english. The non UW dental website you guys are referring to recommends those courses when applying to multiple dental schools.

That website also mentions that a year of english will help you prepare for the verbal section on the DAT....

I got the official word from UW and you don't need to take physics lab. So I'm fairly confident that you don't have to take the other labs either although they are required at most dental schools.

Just interviewed there today! It would be a dream come true to attend that school. I am worried it may be too late in the game. Hopefully they haven't dished out too many of their acceptances already.

I have heard that they have only filled 16-20 of their available 64 spots. The school is pretty schweeet! I am waiting on their call as well, every "unknown number" gives me a mild heart attack...

Oh really? Where'd you hear that from? Totally understand what you mean about unknown numbers. =)

Have any of you December 14th interview girls heard anything yet???

did you contact kathy about dropping this class..I'm wondering what the policy is about completing planned coursework already listed on aadsas, is the offer contingent upon completing everything mentioned on aadsas? I know for some schools it is, but not sure about uw, you might want to make sure before dropping it.

hmmm good question... I did email it to kathy but all I asked was if it was required on top the physics lecture class I am taking this semester. Kathy said it wasn't, but I didn't really ask about the whole AADSAS stipulation. Maybe I should just call her again and make sure...

When I talked to Carol Brown a week ago, she had said that they'd only sent out around 20 acceptances. I know that UW will wait until they finish up all of their interviews until they accept the major bulk of the class. Traditionally, they wait until mid March to fill up the class.

Also verified with a discussion I had with Kathleen Craig yesterday.
