Ok I know I'm kind've late applying. I was just wondering if anyone applied to the University of Washington school of public health? I am an undergrad senior and their website makes it seem as if they are only accepting people who already have post bac experience. I know Hopkins and Harvard are like that as well.. which schools aren't? And is washington for sure? I dont know ANYONE who is doing public health so I'm kind've an island. I'm also using my MCAT scores (that i plan to take in April..) my prospects are worrisome.

Most MPH programs would like you to have work experience. Kind of like MBA programs, you would get more out of the program if you came in with work experience as well. Unless you do the MPH strictly for the technical aspects of the training (eg., econometrics & biostatistics), some might even say you'll be wasting your time if you don't have prior work experience.

Many schools have programs where you work part time and take classes part time. At UW, for example, Christopher Murray's institute of health metrics has a program where they hire people out of undergrad to work on their Global Burden of Disease Study, and you can also take MPH classes concurrently. I don't know the Web site offhand, just google around for it.

You're not likely to get in with no work experience, no contacts and no scores until may or later. If you get in, good for you. But just don't be dejected if you get REjected. MPH is a professional - rather than academic - degree. You'll get there with a little more organization and work if you don't get it the first time. UW is one of the best programs, so you're headed in the right direction.

As of last year when I applied, it was not necessary to have a minimum amount of public health experience for the Unviersity of Washington. I am currently a first-year MPH student at the UW, and came here straight out of undergrad. I will, however, note that there are only a few people in my program who were accepted as seniors in college, so while is it possible, I get the impression that it is very competitive. In addition, I had public health experience throughout college, so I am sure that helped my application.

Is anyone applying to the Post-Bachelor Fellowship Program at the University of Washington (Health Metrics and Evaluations)? Does anyone know how competitive it is?
