University of Waterloo - Interview

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys

congratulations on making to UW School of Pharmacy, I am kind of late but I have made it as well. I look forward to meeting you all in Winter 2009. We should also create a new thread for people who have been accepted so we can know each other better. Lets keep in touch and everyone have a blasting summer vacation.

Yeah we should! May be we can open up a facebook account! It'll be great to know you all. I am still so excited with the news!

It feels great to change our status from 'pre-pharmacy student' to 'pharmacy student'!

Hi everyone, this is my first post and guess what I got in UW School of pharmacy. Congrats to everyone who made it in. However, I am in a dilemma aobut where to go to pursue the pharamcy program. I have been already accepted into the Doctor of Pharmacy program in the US and now Co-op BScPhm at UW. I will appreciate if everyone can give me critical and well thought opinions by putting yourselves in my place. It is a very tough decision for me to make, but a very significant one. Thanks for your time and comments.

Wow.... you are in a pickle I can say (lol). But jokes apart, I think you should first listen where your heart wants to go? Do you plan to come bac to Canada to practice? Is the US school of your choice? I may find myself in your place soon, so I am still thinking about the options. The Co-op is very appealing but the only thing that is pulling me back is the BSc. compared to Pharm D in the US. Also here I have the option of paying back my loans while I am studying but in the States, the tutions is almost double for international students... and I don't think you can get work outside Uni, so that's something to think about! I am currently set to go Waterloo... Love the university and the environment!
My best advice follow your heart, it can never lie to you!

Thanks for your advice, however, I expected a response in terms of the differences between the degree offered in Canada and the US and how it will make difference to have one or the other degree in the long term?

Does anyone know where Genetics is offered online without lab component?? Also what course did U of T students pick to meet the genetics requirement at UW?? Thanks in advance..

the U of T equivalent of genetics (just lecture) is HMB265H1, you can search that up on the www.artsci.utoronto.ca website under "current students"

u should also check if it is offered by distance education at waterloo..so you wouldn't even need to worry about equivalency

i actually still need to finish microbiology.. likely at ryerson cuz they offer it in the fall term and it can be finished by dec. do u guys know of any other uni's that offer this course within the time frame?

hey shunsistoesis ur a ut student right? do u know the course code of the equivalent course and if a ut student is going to be allowed to take a course at ryerson??

hey cherryumbrella, the equivalent is MGY377H1. actually, here is an email i received from Julie Pocock (admissions specialist) this morning regarding course equivalents..it will clear up any inquiries :)

The BIOL 140 lab is not required for admission this year (we are making special allowances for this year's class). Equivalent courses you can take are:

U Toronto:
MGY 377H, or BIO 370Y, or BIO 371Y, or BIO 371H, or MPL375Y

Ryerson U:
CBLG151

York U:
SC BIOL 3150

this is good news..i figured i'll just finish the pre-req at uoft so i can spend one more half year with my peeps =P furthermore, i want to save myself from any administrative hassle registering as a student at another institution

Hey! Congrats everyone!! I was just wondering how many classes everyone still has to take before Jan? I've got 1 in the summer and 2 for the fall but I'm having trouble finding them at Mac~stressing:(

Thank you for the information. I have checked the information on DE website, but unluckily Genetics is not offered in Fall; however, they may put it later on. I am going to ask the admission specialist.

I'm missing OrgoII, Chem 254 and a social sci or humanities though I have already taken 4 psych courses and a religious studies :S

Hi people!
Right now on Facebook, there's this "University of Waterloo, School of Pharmacy Co-op" group, which is created by the class of 2011 and is intended for people who have questions for admission.

Anyone interested in having a Facebook group for class of 2012?

PS: I am currently here at UW, science student. Just got in as well. :)

hey..did anyone get a call from Ken Potvin? I accepted the invitation yesterday and I got a call today but I wasn't home. He left a message saying he had some questions to ask about admission. I am supposed to call him back on Wed. So just wondering if anyone else got the call and see what's it about. Also, congratulations to all who got in!

Oh. Well my mom took the message so she must have heard it wrong. I guess I'll still call him on Wed because he isn't in on Tue. But it seems like he's calling whoever is accepting as a welcome call and let us know that we can contact him in case of any questions.

u can always thank him for his call/ask questions by email or to julie pocock

Is anyone else trying to taking chem 254 online at Bishops? They seem so disorganized, I can't get a straight answer as to whether they're actually offering the online section this year.

Does anyone know where Genetics is offered online??? I tried searching for it but no success. If anyone doing genetics this fall, let me know where you guys are doing it.

I am also trying to take this course. Julie Pocock said that they are for sure offering it in the fall but I can't find anywhere on their website how to apply for it.

I called them today and spoke to the chemistry department. They said they only have about 4 ppl interested right now and they need a minimum of 15 so unless more ppl want to enroll they might not have the class..they said they will be deciding soon. I'm going to email Julie Pocock again (she told me the same thing)

So I called Ken today and he said he called to congratulate me and see if I have any questions. I believe everyone who accepts the invitation is getting the call.

Not everyone get's the call. I didn't. But it's all cool cuz I totally accepted my offer the second it went up on quest last wednesday. Maybe that was a sign to him that I had no questions. LOL

hehee..that's cute. maybe ken just calls those who haven't completed all the pre-reqs to follow up..u finished all of them right?

Yea, I'm done all the prereqs. That's one relief, helped to be a UW undergrad trying to get all those done. lol. I'll still be back in the fall though, to try and get my degree. Eek, though I'm not so sure 3 straight terms of school is a great idea. The pharmacy terms are jam packed with courses.

I have finished all my pre-reqs too :S. lol. Well either way, the call was just to let us know that they are there if we have any question; so it's all good.

hey i'm kinda confused about something..i know it stupid question, and i'm probably mis-interpreting something but on the UW pharm site it says:
You are responsible for completing all the required courses and having your final transcripts submitted by the end of May. However, you may begin the admissions process before completing all the required courses for admission.
Courses completed between the end of May and the beginning of your Pharmacy program cannot normally be used to meet admissions requirements and will not normally be considered by the Admissions Committee. Students who have completed all required courses will have a competitive advantage. In all cases, all of the required courses must be completed before you can commence the Pharmacy program.
and on this forum some ppl still need to take a calss or two in the fall...so what i'm trying to ask is can i apply next year without finishing all the prereq's by May? mainly it's my anatomy and physiology class that would I would have to take in fall 2009.
thanks for your input:)

hi there, no no not a stupid question at all. Waterloo will definitely give admission preference to applicants who have completed all the pre-requisites by May 2009 if you are applying to the Jan 2010 admission cycle. However, because the school is so new, and because their course requirements are probably difficult to complete in 2 years at other universities, many applicants including myself decided to give it a shot and apply even if we won't be done all the courses by May. Your individual competitiveness ultimately depends on that of the overall applicant pool, so if other ppl happen to be in the same boat as you then you're safe(r). I recommend you still apply next year, but keep in mind that the longer the school has been established the more competitive its applicants become (i.e more and more will have completed their pre-reqs).

oh and also, i don't believe anatomy is a requirement.

hey guys

i have heard a lot about UW and apparently their pharmacy program is not that great, eaiser to get into that UT but they are having a lot of administrative problems..... even their co-op program is bad , alot of the student had to find their own placements and if you want to do co-op out of province , you will have a really hard time as they have VERY FEW out of province spots...so dont trust their stupid website that says you will get a chance to go international blah blah, the only way you will get to do this is if you arrange your own somehow, for the mostpart they want you to stay in Ontario, i think you even have to promise them to do one of your co-ops in an underserved area in ontario , so be prepared to work in some boonyland for four months
their program is a lot of hype , thats about it

cya

lol. So I have no clue what your sources are but you are completely wrong. There were tons of jobs posted. Some students did find their posistions but for their own reasons, not because they weren't any jobs. They are also working on international jobs. You have to realize that the school has only undergone one co-op term and that there are tons more to go. Don't expect all your eggs to be in the first basket! lol.

Yes, you have to promise to serve in an underserved area. An underserved area is also an area with a shortage of health-care workers. To be honest, you don't need to go to the booneyland to find that!

Yes, most of the jobs are in Ontario! Go figure! They opened a school of pharmacy in Ontario to keep pharmacists here! So no duh most of the jobs are gonna be here!

As for placements, the positions are not placements! A placement is when you are "placed" into a job. I don't consider submitting cover letters and resumes and going to individual and group interviews to be hired "placed" in a job.

I sincerely hope that no one takes your post seriously because there's a lot of bad information in it.

I'm actually curious about what RX2011 said because I've heard some of the same things, gonna contact my friend in the program to check in.

Hey yazahra89,
I am in the same position as you as I am missing a few courses as well and have similar phamacy experience as you. I hope that this does not put us at a disadvantage but i've heard that they might allow you to complate the required course before the start of the program. I think we should start a thread for UW Pharm 2011 applications. I hope this helps you out.

yeah I agree. I will start a new thread for waterloo 2011 entry

Hi Eastmall,
If you've got a strong AP, ROF, and GPA you shouldn't worry since UW has admitted students in the past who were missing up to 3 courses. It all depends on the applicant pool though. We'll just have to wait and see! Good luck to everyone!

any one have got an idea what kind of questions will be asked on the interview date ? its 30 min....i am worried about it...
