Alright first I cannot believe that I made it through something so stupid from a guy named bobotheclown. However, if you want to go to a good school, there are lots of them, and you don't have to end up in a dump like California (save newport) to get an education. UC davis is a cow pasture and a complete waste of a 15 minute visit, let alone 4 years of school. UCLA rots in that wasteland known as LA where Bobo probably lives in a converted fourth bedroom inside a studio, pays $2000 per month for rent, and talks about seeing Lindsay Lohan at the Viper room although still hasn't made it past the dive bars because gas is too expensive. UCSD has a good marine biology department, and after that you can go to the San Diego zoo, or get some sun at your choice of some of the ugliest, nastiest beaches in the US. Anyone looking for thesis oppurtunities should make a project out of the number of syringes one gets poked with as your walk out to mission or pacific beach. The weather is nice for the most part. The people there all wear some skate company shirt even though they dont skate and they pretend to be lifelong California residents even though they grew up in Pennsylvania. Basically, I would rather go anywhere other than a UC school.

CA and TX both have good schools, but I think the texas system is better in that it cares about home state applicants. Too bad I'm from Mass

The state schools in MN and WI are better than most of the Cali schools...we also pay very high taxes. But I would rather pay higher taxes and have better docs and roads etc than those flatlanders.

Dude, we live in flat prairie environs... while Cali boasts the highest point in the lower 48, Mt. Whitney.

And I think even the most ardent supporter of UMN and UW-Mad would be hard-pressed to rank them above UCSF and UCLA. That said, the upper midwest schools do represent great bang for the buck, while not being impossible admissions-wise.

Actually, OHSU was ranked #2 in the nation for Primary Care education by US News... for the past 5 yrs or so. The only other school higher... another state school, and not a Cali one... UW. Research is great too, but its overrated due to academic snobbery. Primary care doctors are really what this country needs. Our country spends way way too much money on healthcare (14.9% of our GDP compared to less than 10% for any other civilized country), and yet we still cant even cover adequately 100 million people (about 40-50 million uninsured, and the rest are "underinsured".). The reason for that is that we don't do nearly enough preventative care because we dont have enough primary care doctors, and we dont have enough primary care coverage. So.. I'm gonna go with my gut here and say Oregon has a pretty good state medical school. Better than most of the UC schools, that's for sure. It ain't all about 4.0's and 40 MCATs and lots of presigious research... those normally dont make the best docs. Get off your high horse, and I hope you never become a doctor.
