so basically you need 20 or above in all sections to be competitive? did they say anything about GPA and does anyone know if they favor DAT scores over GPA?

Do you think they just told you that so you wouldn't bother them any more?

I'm a little confused by this response from UNLV since they reported DAT/PAT averages of 19.27/18.78. Are you in state or out of state?

I only sent them one email... and they were very quick to respond. Actually I emailed the assistant to records and admissions.. i visited the school last year on my way through Vegas to the beach of sunny southern california and met her. She was really nice. She told me in the email that to be competitive you must
"the school does not have a cutoff for DAT's but in order to be competitive you want to have scores around the 20's.
I hope this answered your question, if you have any other questions please feel free to call or email me back."
She said for in-staters it is not nearly as competitive. Last year they recieved 2800 applicants for 35 out-of-state spots and 150 for 40 in-state spots. craziness....

UNLV has a formula that they use to compare all applicants and its like this

(overall GPA/4)(science GPA/4)[(Ochem+Bio+QR)/90](RC/30) x 50

Then there are two interviews one from a student and one from a faculty member each worth 25 points so a perfect overall score is 100. They say if you get high 60s you are almost guaranteed a spot. The big problem about UNLV is that they accept instate and 35 out of state. They receive 150 instate application and about 3000 out of state applications so to be competitive out of state 20s is almost a necessity. Instate not so much I have friends that are starting with me this year that got in with 18s but again they are instate applicants and the competition isnt nearly as fierce.

yeah i'm outta state. the in-staters are the ones who bring down those DAT averages I'm guessing.

Im instate and I brought up those averages. Not everyone in Nevada is dumb.

Thanks for the equation! Do you happen to know how many out of staters they interview?

Last year there were 8 interview dates for everyone they were going to accept in December. These were every Thursday if I remember correctly through October and November. At my interview there were around 25-30 people and I was the only instate. Most were from California or Utah. I got accepted on december 1st so I dont really know what happened after, but I know a lot of friends (though they were all instate) that got accepted throughout the spring semester up until April.

thanks for all the great info, i'm OOS so i'll keep my fingers crossed

(overall GPA/4)(science GPA/4)[(Ochem+Bio+QR)/90](RC/30) x 50

I wonder why they don't factor in the general chemistry and the PAT in their equation.

PAT isnt included because its been proven that a high PAT score doesnt really coorelate to success in D school, but contrary to most people's belief a high QR score does. And GC...well you learn most of that in high school anyway. Probably the easiest section of the DAT

If telling you that you have no shot will hasten your trip to the freezer to get the Haagen Dazs, then yeah, you have no shot. Enjoy.

In all seriousness, though, you said the lady told you "around 20's," is competitive. A 19 is just as close to 20 as 21 is, albeit it's not in as good of a direction. What are your stats?

from that equation, what puts you at a good spot for an interview?

Tu-shai!

TS 18 AA 18 PAT 19.

My 18's aren't even close to get looked at. My GPA/SGPA are a 3.6/3.4 respectively. What do you suppose I do besides eat ice cream? (I really am taking any advice here.... however know that I won't be able to take the DAT again until it's too late... so the simply answer of "retake the DAT" won't do.)

Id say mid to high 20s or low 30s would guarantee you an interview

To have a 30 from that formula you would need some seriously high scores and GPA across the board. If your overall and science GPA were 4.0 you'd still need 23 on Bio/OChem/QR & RC. That's a pretty high hurdle! Are they tryin to become an Ivy Leaguer??

I had a buddy from my school apply to UNLV last year. He had good DAT scores (20,21,22) but only a 3.5 overall and a 2.9 science. He didn't get in, but he interviewed. According to the equation he would be a 14.57. That's about where I'm at. Well, maybe I'll at least get to see the strip?

was your friend instate or out of state? I'm just trying to see where I stand, thanks

(overall GPA/4)(science GPA/4)[(Ochem+Bio+QR)/90](RC/30) x 50

Where did you get this information?

Although it is fun to speculate, my advice is not to be the admission committee. Apply to all the schools you'd like to go to, but just don't get your hopes up about any school.

I got waitlisted with a 68 last cycle.

They tell you that formula when you are at the interview. You should see how many interviewies write it down.

if you're in-state, i think you need ~18 on the DAT.

just seeing where I stand for schools now that I have my DAT scores and how much all this is still relevant cuz predents shows a lot of the people with not all 20+ scores so hopefully that says there's still hope...

cuz for people like me that dont' have all those 20+ such stats even if you get a perfect on the interview (50 pts) it's still low 60s which isn't a done deal according to what everyone is saying...

could they have changed the formula for this year?
(i hope but i doubt it)

i am an in stater, and it is true that it is not nearly as difficult for us to get in. i have had fellow UNR students get accepted with 17's. what happens is; a good majority of the applicants with strong scores get accepted to out of state schools and end up going out of state and leaving spots open at unlv. although this is not obviously true of everyone it allows for in staters with lower scores to have a greater chance. on a side note, Ive also heard that people from Utah are moving into Nevada prior to applying in order to gain residency and have a better chance at getting in.

4-years of out of state tuition at UNLV = $213,300 😱
4-years of in state tuition at Baylor = $30,000

hmmmmmmmm, I'm trying to get excited about UNLV! 🙄 Baylor was a great school so I think UNLV's got it's work cut out for it to try and help me feel that it's worth it. Is there something that I'm missing? Why would they even invite me for an interview if they already know that they're going to reject me with a 19 AA?!

they should also multiply this score by your height and your weight and then divide it by your shoe size and then square it by how many letters are in your middle name. That's what I'm talkin about!

I know that this might be a little off topic but my app has been complete at UNLV for over a month and I haven't heard anything from them. I don't know if it is a good idea to call and check status or if they would get annoyed. Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I keep waiting.......

I'm in the same boat as you... I'm just waiting this one out.
Good luck!

How do you know you were a 68, Kappa? You can only figure out the first 50 points from the equation, and unless the told you how you scored in the interview, you don't know how you did with the other 50 points.

I got waitlisted last year too. I was an October Interview and I think my stats came up to about 22 out of 50 for the first part of that equation. So you don't need outstanding stats to get an interview, but you need to do well in the interviews to get considered if you are out of state.

There were 18 people in my interview group (19 if you count the Girlfriend of one of the Utah guys that seemed extremely surprised when her boyfriend started asking several questions about the possibility of his "wife" getting a job as a teacher in Nevada as a way to gain auto-residency). Only 1 person was in state, 9 were from BYU, 2 more were also from Utah schools, the rest of the 6 of us were from Arizona and California mostly.
