UNLV-most expensive?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I thought UNLV is a public school.
Wow, that's expensive.

I am a DS2 at UNLV and I understand your concern, on paper we look expensive but our tuition includes all of our fees for instruments and books. So for me 29,000 is all I pay the first three years and then 19,000 for the fourth year because we only have two semesters that year. Also every out of state student should have no problem gaining instate status after the first year as long as your willing to get a nevada drivers liscense.
I have a brother in law trying to decide whether to come here or go to case western. He points out that case's tuition is only 5k more than ours a year(34,000). Although he cant understand that he will have to pay 10-15k a year extra in fees and instruments at case whereas at UNLV its all included. I calculate the difference over four years to be between 55-60k when you consider all the fees and the fact that his fourth year tuition is still 34k compared to UNLV's 19K.
I like the way they do it here, my semester fees will remain the same throughout the time I am here.
My cousin at pacific pays 60K every 9 months. A total of 240K after three years compared to my 110K for four years. Now thats expensive!

Fees already included???? on the website, it clearly states that you expect to pay the fee of $3,400 per semester. That's more than 10K per year.
Also, you're comparing a public school with one of the most expensive private schools.

Your right but a little confused. On the website the amount for tuition says 29,000. This amount already includes those fees your talking about. So of that 29,000 about a third of it is fees so our tuition (as other schools calculate it) is really about 20,000. I know it may be confusing when every other school separates the two. They dont do that here. We dont pay anything else each year except that 29,000. I dont know why they dont do a better job of explaining this on the website(which hasn't been updated for about a year). On the website tuition should be termed total yearly cost of attendance minus living expenses. This is a lesson in not believing everything you read on the internet. But if you want to believe we pay more then more power to you. However, by bills show otherwise.

This is OT, but I am excited to say I was accepted to UNLV today. Viiiiiiiva Las Vegas!

Col Sir, any update on the new building?

Shawn

Congrats on getting in!! I drive by the new building every week or so and see lots of construction going on. By all accounts we are ready for an april move in date. I cant tell you how excited I am to get into the schools new clinic instead of all the satellite clinics we have been going to here. Your gonna love vegas!

Just looking at the papers given at the UNLV interview.

NV residents

Tuition/Fees - 29,700
Books - 3,900
Room - 2,200
Board - 4,670
Personal - 4,670
Transport - 2,100
Loan Fees - 675
Total - $43,505

Out-of-staters Total - $63,005

Those number were both for 'with parent', for 'off campus' add another $6,000 to those totals.

This is right off the paper given to us at the interview. Col Sanders, I hope you are right and this paper is a mistake!

Yeah,

you have to include the roughly 4000 dollars for books. I got the same piece of paper when I interviewed there and it seems to be accurate.

It comes out to be comparable to some of the privates and is the most expensive state school. You also have to go to school year round for the first 3 years.

That being said, they curriculum seems cool, you'll be in the new facility, and the people are very cool there.

Datdude,

Is that 3900 just for the Vitalbook, or does that also include your instruments?

I am assuming you must buy a instument kit and a laptop.

I dont know what they are handing out during interviews, because if you talk to any of the students we dont pay separately for books or anything else. Its all included in the 29,000. I will make a suggestion to the dean of admissions to be more clear with those applying. It may just be the admissions office has outdated or incorrect information. However, the fact remains, I have only paid 29,000 for everything related to my dental education for the past two years, I even have the tax forms to prove it. With that said. Shawnone, you are adding personal living expenses and transportation to your total. I have not added that in any of my posts, In fact I pointed out a few posts earlier that the 29,000 is cost of attendance MINUS living expenses. Just tuition and fees. As far as being the most expensive public dental school we are on the high end (which is a drawback), but we are no where near the cost of private schools. I just looked up Oregon Health Sciences and they cost 88k for four years and ours is 110K. I agree this is alot but not near the 160K you'll pay at a private school like case or marquette.

Oh and yes, the 29000 includes handpeices (electric), instruments, typodont teeth all the vitalsource texts (75 in my library) and a brand new IBM Thinkpad T40p with 256mb memory key.

Wow! Great news. I'll be paying less than I thought!!! Merry Christmas to ME!

I apologize to those I mislead. Apparently the financial aid department has distributed a new sheet of information. I spoke with Dr. Ancajas in Admissions today and she said that tuition and fees will be handled a little different for this next years class than had been the case for me or the first years. Supposedly, new students will now be charged a laptop fee(2500) their first year along with a few other first year fees. I am still unsure how it will all work for those coming in next year. I would contact her for further information as the website information is also incorrect. I guess I was lucky to get in when I did because it looks to be more expensive now.

Oh well, think of it this way... the previous classes didnt pay the extra $4,000, but they also had to deal with not having a building.

This years class is lucky enough to walk into a BRAND NEW facility at the cost of an extra $4,000. Fair enough i think!

yup.

According to the interview, everything associated with the dental school will move to the new location, including lecure halls, labs, and the clinic.
