hi everybody,

i was recently admitted to both UNLV and Ohio State dental school, however im really torn about which school to attend. I absolutely loved both school, and I am a current resident of california (southern). the only reason i would choose UNLV is because of its proximity to my family however im not sure if this is a good enough reason. please give me your advice on this situation and both schools!!! im in desperate need of help lol!!! thanks

Unlv is expensive but has newer equipment. We also have good placement into residencies. Never been to Ohio state so I can't speak to that. If I had to do it over again I would pick the cheapest school. All dental schools pretty much teach you the same thing and nobody cares where you went to dental school when you get out.

I asked a current UNLV dental student these questions and these were his responses...Maybe it will help with your decision.

1. Is it true that lectures are not recorded? Does this make it completely necessary to attend all lectures? all lectures are mandatory bc profs can give pop quizzes whenever they feel like it. if ppl decide to ditch and the prof notices then he might decide to give a pop quiz. lectures can be recorded (audio only) by students only after receiving permission from the prof. very strict. theyre pretty anal about it. dont know why. its not like you learn anything from lec. you learn more on your own from textbooks and the internet.
2. Do you have to buy a dell laptop? yes it is mandatory. i've tried to get out of it but its not possible. ~$1400 bucks.
3. What is the year-round schedule like? When are you breaks and how long are they? not really sure how to answer this since i thought all d-schools were year round but you have 2 week breaks after each semester and 1 week break for spring break.
4. How difficult do you find the program to be? I'm prepared to work hard in dental school, but i've heard that some students at UNLV feel like they are constantly cramming and drowning because of how many tests you have each week. yes this is very, very, very true. constantly cramming and drowning bc we have a lot of tests. the program is not difficult. its just finding time to study and practice your handskills. youre in class from 8 to 3pm some days and 8 to 5pm others. only on friday do you get out at noon.
5. Have you seen significant tuition increases since you first started as a 1st year?
havent noticed any increases.
6. Do you think that UNLV is a good school to attend if you want to specialize?50% of the graduating class went on to pursue a specialty.
7. There are rumors about professors at UNLV being harsh and unhelpful towards students...any truth to this? meh. yeah there is some truth. profs in sim lab are very very subjective. one grader might think your work is good while another might say its average. profs are very very lazy here. i personally dont learn much from lecture and have to go to other resources/notes to learn/study. profs try to portray that theyre helpful but they arent that helpful.
