What is the tuition for the fellowship? Is this for orthodontic graduates (to train in treating craniofacial/cleft lip and palate patients) or for those who want to beef up their CV before applying to orthodontic residency programs?

The tuition is $20,000, and it is geared to boost your CV and prepare you for an orthodontic Residency.

Is UNLV ortho still under probationary status? I think aside from Florida's program, these ortho fellowships are for the most part a way for schools/residencies to make $$$

I was actually hoping this thread would be about post-ortho fellowships in orthognathics/clefts/craniofacial. Aside from NYUMC (Grayson), UIC, Boston Children's, any others??

Are these fellowship positions anything more than a money making scheme for the ortho residencies? Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems that they allow program to not only collect tuition from fellows, but to see more patients and therefore provide more income for the program.

They also give you more ortho experience than you'll get anywhere else besides an actual ortho residency. Internships and fellowships provide great training (usually) for the student and yes some cheap production and labor for the program. That's how the system works.

well i hope after doing these fellowship the kids match. can't learn a whole lot in 1 yr.
after 1st yr in ortho residency i was a total confused mess. most of the learning comes during the last 8 months when we learn how to finish cases, stability, etc

I called and emailed... There seems to be zombies on that uni...

I learned a ton at my residency the first 12 months, and was ready to leave after 14 months =).

what about the programs which gives stipends? I think some of them are designed for orthodontist who wants to have training in that specific field and help those needy patients.

You can learn a lot dedicating one year to anything. Leaving any fellowship after 25-40k of debt and not recieving a certificate with hopes that it will enhance your chances of matching to a CODA approved residency is risky. Sometimes great risk brings great rewards. However, I would not have done it myself.

Congratulations in choosing to pursue training in treating the deserving cleft-craniofacial orthodontic population! Please be aware the American Cleft Palatal Craniofacial Association has a resident scholarship to attend their annual session. Also see their page for a listing of orthodontic fellowships: http://www.acpa-cpf.org/education/fellowships/. Of particular note, the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, a leader in cleft-craniofacial team care, seeing over 4500 patients annually, recently announced a cleft craniofacial orthodontic fellowship program. The orthodontic division is a full time orthodontic practice that is dedicated to the birth-adulthood treatment of persons with clefts and craniofacial conditions. Please email: [email protected] for more information.
