I was wondering if anyone has already had their interview at UNLV, and what they thought of the school. I visited last summer and interview later this year. What was the interview like? What does everyone think of the new facility?

My interview is Nov 9th, I will let you know.

MY UNLV interview is November 9th also...did you originally have it set for Veteran's Day and they called and changed it on you? That earned the airline quite a few extra dollars to switch the flights! Haha 🙂

Yah, wasn't that fun! I have paid like 200 dollars plus in reschedule fees because my hubby was going with me. BAH!

Oh well now I don't have gambling money!

🙂 See you there.

HAHA, same here, my Dad is going with me, so between the two flights and hotel it cost an arm and a leg to change everything. Hopefully it'll be worth it...I'm really looking forward to this interview! 🙂 See you next month! 😀

OK, sounds like a plan! I am depressed about not having gambling money! 🙁 I won 480 on a slot machine like 3 years ago. I had only put in like $3 bucks when it went off.

I interviewed there last week. I loved it. I really like the new building and the theory behind the school. I think Vegas is a sweet place to live to if you don't mind the heat and lack of snow.

I really like the way they set up their curriculum. Instead of having different modules of the basic sciences like a bio class, physio class, genetics class....they study all the sciences at the same time based on systems. For example when they study the circulatory system they learn all of the anatomy physiology genetics immunology ect... of the respected system at the same time. This makes sense to me.

I also like the fact that their curriculum is based on Evidence Based Dentistry.

I also really like the fact that it is a new school. All their faculty came from the other existing dental schools and brought with them knowledge about their previous schools. They all were able to use the good things from each school and leave out the bad things. And because the school is so new they are open to new ideas. I talked to a third year student there and he said that a while back the student had a problem with the way the curriculum was set up.....so the told the faculty and the faculty made the changes the students wanted. Where else are you going to get that?

The facilities are awesome. The clinic is beautiful! So new and shiny! There pre-clinic lab (sim lab) I thought was just o.k. And the building itself is awesome.

Patient Pool is nice.

Overall I thought the school was very sweet.

I did talk to a second year student who said that student moral was pretty low. This is a red flag to me. He didn't go into detail, however I trust him.

Anyway hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. Is there any way to see how the UNLV students did on their boards for the past year or so?

I talked to Dr. Brownstein and he said that they finished a little below average last year. They were really excited about his because it was the first class to take it and they had already had better scores than many schools. This reinforced that their curriculum had a solid start.

I'm about to throw out some numbers that are just not acurate because I can't really remember. But I think he said that the national average last year was in the 84% range and that they scored in the high 83% range. But again these are just to my best recollection.

Also, one explanation for the below average board scores, may related to the quality of of the applicants that they had for the first year. The admission stats for the first year weren't too impressive, am I am sure that there is a correlation between applicant stats and board performance. However it does appear that they are off to a solid start, and I expect that there will be a significant improvement in the upcoming years. One thing about UNLV's inagural class, they are definitely pioneers!

For those who will have interview with UNLV soon:
First of all, good luck (no, it is not as hard and intense as Arizona's, but just to say good luck to you!). 😍
Second, I went there this week and I loved it. From the interview, you will learn ton of information that will be very helpful to you when you attend a dental school. The school will present to you about its curriculum, financial aid, selection process, etc....You will hear good tip about what you should or should not do as an applicant, as a dental student, and as a person who will have to make a major decision for his or her professional study, especially when choosing a school to attend.
And the interview was very relaxing. The faculty and the student representative asked a lot of personal questions about you so they could get to know you better. I felt the interview was like a casual conversation between my friends and me. And the facility is lovely! I think UNLV have made great progresses in the past 3 years to achieve what they have today.
I can go on and on about my positive impression of UNLV but i think I should let you experience that on your own. I think most of us, the applicants, have a mistaken viewpoint that new schools like UNLV or Arizona do not have much to offer like other well-established schools, but I think we are wrong (or at least I was, if my statement offends someone). I really like the new teaching methods and the new approach to dental education that these new schools adopted. No doubt in my mind that in a few years, these schools will make names for themselves and will be much more competitive to get in.
Good luck everyone! Hope my feedback helps!

I am at UNLV right now, and I love it. The post above about the board scores is right. The third years were not as competitive as we were or c/0 2007. Also, the curriculum is totally different now and I think that makes a difference too. (they had all science one semester and all professional studies the next 😱 ) Class of 09 will have it made. ALL the kinks will be worked out by then for sure! GO REBELS! 👍

Thanks for the informative post Dr. Smiley! I will let you know how it goes for me. My interview is very soon. 😛
