An email has been sent out to the staff saying that the interm dean, Richard Carr won't be the dean anymore after June 30, for "personal reasons." We all know what "personal reasons" mean, "I screwed with you, now I am leaving."

You gotta have grit for that job. If the faculty isn't on your case for one reason or another, the students are and vice versa. In many cases it really is a thankless position

i don't understand why he's quiting! i mean, everything has been going wonderfully at UNLV lately 🙄

He was supposed to leave, just one month or so from now. He retired initally due to health problems. Then he came back to help out the school in need of an interim dean until they fill the spot since ours is going to UOP. Well, his physician and family came to the conclusion that his health is first and he needed to step down for the last few weeks of the job since he wasn't supposed to do it in the first place. It was a health issue and we are very glad he is taking care of himself first.

From my perspective, UNLV seems like a big clusterf**k of a school.

Yeah now they are even having problems with OEC and the orthodontics program. OEC is in some financial trouble it appears and not paying UNLV some of the money they promised the school.

😱 When it rains it pours!

I wouldn't say that. It's having some problems, as are many schools. He's an interim dean and was retired anyway, so it isn't like he was expected to stay.

On the other hand, I DO feel bad for UOP getting stuck with their new dean. 🙂

Many of us have talked to Ferrillo during his many visits to the campus and he seemed nice enough. We'll see how it goes I guess.

The selection process had been long and tedious. The selection committee narrowed it down to 3 candidates: the deans from WVU, OSU, and UNLV. It was cool to meet them all, grill them with questions, and then send our feedback to the committee. The guy from WVU couldn't give us a compelling reason for wanting to be dean of UOP other than he couldn't stand living in WVU anymore. The OSU dean had the largest stick up his butt. He was all business, refused to answer any personal questions, and wanted to turn UOP into a 4-year program and expand it so we would have every specialty program possible. UNLV's dean was the most personable of the 3 candidates and expressed a philosphy most like Dugoni's, but with a more modern take.

There were several candidates internally that probably should have got the nod, but school politics kept them from making it into the final selection. Word is that the president of the university wanted someone from the outside so that he could have more say in what goes on at the dental school. Dugoni had been here so long and had such a loyal base, he pretty much had free reign of the dental school.

Not to mention Ferillo and Duogoni are really good friends.... Hmmmm.....
But seriously, he really IS a good dean. By that I mean political in how he approaches things: he won't give you a straight answer to a question. If you address a problem he somehow spins it into a positive and before you even have a chance to counter he moves on. Things like that. But you school is pretty established so I don't think he can do much harm 👍

Thanks for the support. I am a recent graduate and am very proud of the school and what it has accomplished in the last 4 years. It is unfortunate that there is a lot of bad publicity, but i believe my education was excellent.

Interim Dean Carr is a great guy and I feel bad that he took lots of punishment over this whole scandal. He certainly deserves better.

Being a UNLV student, I agree with the above poster. I am so grateful for the education I am getting here. Some people, for some reason, take joy in bashing other schools. Namely, people who have ties there and for some reason see it as beneficial to them to go out of their way to give it a bad stigma. Notice the original poster in the "scandal posts" were from a "NV DENTAL" going to USC. The other poster that seems to be going out of their way to "scandal post" is someone who is evidently miserable at UNLV. That is ok! I am sure there are miserable people at every school. But move on over cause there were over 1000 or so non-miserable people would would love to "miserable" in your seat everyday. Let's be grown up about things and TRY be adults here regarding blanket statements about schools.

Maybe you should told your classmates not to cheat? We are all talking about the facts here, he is quitting, and your classfellows cheated. It's known to everyone. Learn to call a spade a spade. And giving a lame excuse that he is quitting for personal reasons so not-original. +pity+

Gemini- didn't you read the email from brownstein? he left in the first place (originally) due to health problems. He came back to interim, and he left the interim again, due to health problems. I think that is classified as "personal."

Sweetgemini--you never have anything good to say. If life is treating you that bad then jump off a f***ing bridge!!

I never said that people didn't cheat or that the scandal didn't have anything to do with Dr. Carr leaving. I simple said that I think the school punished those that were caught and that the criticism that Dr. Carr suffered was undeserved.

While I don't want to start a whole new debate, I believe that 1500 hrs of free dental work and 30 days academic probation was a just punishment. I think the school handled the situation correctly and that the scrutiny by the media is unwarranted.

Cheating goes on at EVERY dental school not just UNLV. We just had the technology to catch it and deal with it. UNLV didn't try to cover it up or deny it. It sucks that Dr. Carr quit, because he was great in his position, but we knew he was going to quit after a short while anyways. Dr. Ferrillo wasn't the most personable guy in the world but he did his job very well. There wasn't anything the school needed that wasn't given to us. He recruited some of the nation's best faculty to teach at our school. He may have been a politician, but that is what our new school needed. I disagree with all the people who feel bad for UOP for getting Ferrillo. UOP is extremely lucky to get such a forward thinking, goal oriented dean. I know I received a top notch education and had a great experience during all 4 years.

SweetGemini has admonished us all to call a spade a spade.

I was wondering if anyone besides me had noticed the vitriolic attitude exhibited by SweetGemini; and apparently some of you have.

Regarding the Board of Regents SweetGemini says,

"BoR are just saving their arses now."

Regarding Dr. Carr SweetGemini says,

"We all know what "personal reasons" mean, "I screwed with you, now I am leaving."

Regarding Dr. Ferrillo SweetGemini says,

"sounds like he has been bull****ting for a long time. I say good riddance."

I agree with SweetGemini, everyone should call things what they are. Given SWEETGemini's very bitter attitude, I would recommend that he/she starts by changing his/her id on this forum because using the word SWEET, really is just not in keeping with the calling a "spade a spade" philosophy.

Nothing inspires confidence in a patient more than a dentist with a drill and a crappy attitude.

Maybe it's time for you to consider adjusting that attitude of yours, or perhaps you would be happier at a different dental school. I don't think many people at UNLVSDM will miss you. In fact, there seems to be a few that might be happy to help you pack.

For the record, I merely posted information that I found in the local newspapers regarding UNLVSDM. None of my posts were meant to "bash" UNLV, but mainly to relay information that I encountered to the dental school community. I read the newspaper everyday and I did not see anyone else posting the information, so I posted it. Not to mention that I find cheating to be a horrible act and that I hope that students at other schools would think twice about commiting similar acts, after reading the article. However, I do get some joy in seeing justice served! (although it does not appear that everyone should have received such as severe as punishment as the others with more involvement received.)

Nevada is my home, although I am attending d-school out of state, and I was excited that UNLV was opeing up a dental school in Las Vegas. I look forward to attending the CE courses they will surely have after I graduate. I am very exicted to see the underprivileged now have more access to dental care in Las Vegas because of UNLVSDM. (My wife was a elementary teacher at an "at risk" school in Las Vegas, and the amount of carious lesions that some her kids had was heart wrenching.) 🙁

I am glad to hear your feelings of UNLV. To be honest, from your "tone" of the postings, I would have never thought this was how you felt about the school. It just seemed like you were always one to rub salt in the wounds. But thanks for your post to clear how you feel about UNLV.
