Here is the scoop:
The facility itself is nothing short of incredible. Everything is brand new and top-notch. Brand new Kavo units, electric drills, digital radiographs...the list goes on and on. Technologically, it blows away every other school I have seen. However, the only area I thought was majorly lacking was the student louge. With a maximum capacity of 87, the place seemed waaay to small to accomidate the 300 students that will be attending by the time the class of 2009 starts. But, there is a Wendy's, a McDonalds, and a few other food places around the school, so it shouldnt be too much of a problem. 👍
The cirriculum seems to be excellent. I was watching some students in the sim lab working on preps. They had their IBM T41's out with all sorts of pictures and instructions (or at least that is what i thought they were). I was very excited to learn the school is pretty much entirely paperless! Also, the students seemed to really like their vitalbook despite the negative things I have seen mentioned on this board. 👍
The staff was also impressive. I was told a few of the top people from across the country are now full time instructors. This includes some of the restoritive faculty members from UTSA. Also, UNLV has the top people in the nation in the field of forensic dentistry. The teachers I met so far were all extremely nice and helpful. I did not hesitate to ask them all sorts of questions, and I feel like I got honest answers. Nobody I met fit the "make your life hell" stereotype of dental professors. 👍
As far as housing and the city, this is the area I was not impressed with. I currently live in Los Angeles, and compared to Las Vegas, I would definately be taking a BIG step down in that respect. The housing prices have SKYROCKETED in Las Vegas, and I now beleive owning property while in school is out of the question (unless you have a spouse who will be working and helping with the mortgage). A nice 2 bedroom condo is now running 160-200k from the 90-130k a few years ago. You can find something in the 125-150 range, but they were far from being 'nice'. This reality was extremely disappointing. Also, I am used to the green lush landscape of LA, so I found the desert landscape to be kinda depressing. There is no grass anywhere, just gravel, sand, and rocks, yuck! 👎
Another thing, while I was driving around in the summerlin area looking at housing, there seemed to be a dentists office in every corner stripmall. Shortage of dentist? I dont know... 😕
Overall, it was a positive experience. I am sure as years pass, the school will build a strong reputation. I would recommend experiencing the school first hand. Its definately worth the time!
