UNMC applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i still haven't heard anything. If they really do use a lottery system, it seems kind of unfair. I made sure I got everything in early so I could interview in October and hopefully find out sooner. Oh well, I still love UNMC...

I spoke with one of the current medical students I know and she says a vast majority of people receiving acceptances won't until February this year. Has anyone else seen that episode of South Park where Cartman freezes himself until the new Wii comes out because waiting is just too painful? Yeah... I feel the same.

Hi Zmeister22, did your friend give a reason for the delay?

No reason, she just said that we won't hear until February this year. Oh well. At least I have a few weeks where I won't run to the mailbox everyday... at least until February 1st.

Good to know thanks for the info.

Some of you NE residents probably know a lot more about this than I do. Anyways, I know there have been rejections pre-interview, but are there any rejections post-interview yet? Or do those all come on March 15th too - ie, you're kept in the pool until the final admitted student pool is determined.

My friend and I (fellow applicant) really dont' thing that they send out true "rejections" until the entire class is full and confirmed, with deposits received. Right now, I think they just work their way down the list of applicants. Not for sure, though. I've never heard of anyone getting a true post-interview rejection.

Hey I got the second round of drinks!!!

...Since I can definitly empathize with the "stalking" game you guys are playing, sucks huh. Funny how the heart rate jumps and palms get sweaty every time you see a mailman. But if you think you got it bad, I played that crapshoot of a game for eight months last year!

good luck!

Ya. I just got rejected post interview. I really thought my interview went well and that my interviewer liked me. I think it was more about my GPA. I was actually rejected pre secondary and appealed so perhaps I didn't shine enough at the interview...? maybe I'll call and ask but i don't know if it matters at this point. bummers 👎

Sorry to hear that...have you gotten any acceptances to lessen the blow?

ya at EVMS. I guess me and UNMC were never meant to be. I will always be a beach girl at heart 😉

Congrats on the acceptance to East Virginia. I wasn't sure what EVMS stood for, so I looked it up and browsed around their site. Looks like a great school, have fun and good luck!

bump for updates.

That's OK, though. I interviewed at DMU this Thursday and actually liked it better. Hope it comes through. I'll let you all know what happens when I find stuff out. Now, I get to go to work...

Ouch Z, sorry to hear that. Did you get a letter in the mail today? Good luck with DMU.

well i was accepted today @ unmc. i was accepted a while ago @ creighton as well. i was wondering if anyone had any opinions on which is the better school/opportunity. i was pretty set on creighton, but being accepted @ unmc changes everything. i'm an instater so unmc is significantly cheaper. i dunno, anybody have any thoughts?

Z, I'm also sorry to hear that. But I live in Des Moines and know a few people at DMU who really like the school - one of my co-worker's husband, in fact. Des Moines is also a great place to live and there are tons of opportunities in the medical field here. The clinical lab I work at now, the doctor who opened the practice went to DMU and now drives a Jaguar and wears gorgeous suits. Good luck with DMU - you'll be very happy here in Des Moines, I can assure you.

Hey. I'm feeling better. I was just ticked earlier because

a) it took 3+ months from the interview to get the decision

b) I had to work tonight (at UNMC) and it's kind of like rubbing salt in a wound

I feel much better now, and things happen for a reason. Maybe they just knew I wouldn't be a good fit for the school. If nothing else, I'll re-apply next year.

Good luck to all of you guys! Congrats to my friend who got accepted today (you know who you be 😉).

JLmali84 and zmeister...do you mind sharing when you interviewed? i'm still waiting, and it's driving me nuts.

i think it was like 10/29th if i remember correctly.

Z, sorry about that, and working there too last night would not have been my top pick either...This is my second time applying so definitely go for it again next year and don't give up!

Would everyone who got a response post their stats just so the rest of us know what UNMC is looking at really?

Hey there J, I definitely think that UNMC blows Creighton out of the water when you look at cost/benefit ratio, the quality of education is basically the same. The only plus with Creighton is the name and the possibilities for residency. At least that's what I've heard from Creighton peeps...but the cost for that is huge!

accepted with sub 3.5 gpa

no previous experience at unmc

ok mcat but nothing spectacular

For those of you accepted/rejected already--what were your MCATs like? And did you ever do research or work at UNMC?

30p mcat, 3.5 GPA, been working full time in the ER as a tech @ UNMC since september.

I was accepted just before Christmas with 35/3.83, OOS, no affiliation with UNMC whatsoever.

see, I'm not so sure about the quality of education. creighton's got a few huge pluses (sp?) -- less hardcore classtime and more time in groups, all exams on the computer standardized to the format of the USMLE (they really prepare you well for it, their pass rate is astronomical!), etc. also what i noticed is that UNMC overall just has a state school party vibe about it...maybe i'm biased because i went to HS with a lot of the kids who go there now (and i really do mean kids, so many of these people are immature and i still don't understand how they even got into med school) but creighton just seemed to have a higher calibur of students, which in turn produces a better learning environment (at least for me). people just seemed to take education more seriously there...and at the same time were able to have a lot of fun. i think the money issue is completely legit, and hope that as an in-stater, creighton will match what unmc gives me! (doesn't hurt to try and i've heard of it being done before)

BUMP.....

I totally think that the education you receive is based on your effort and not based on the "partyage" level of the school itself...Creighton and UNMC use the same hospitals to teach their students, UNMC actually has tons more opportunity for research whereas Creighton does little...I just think that a "party" medical school doesn't exist esp. since it is so hard to get in....Just a thought I guess.

Bump for updates. I feel bad for doing this so often but Im going a little nuts.

You'd REALLY be surprised...

Also, according to the MSAR, almost all of in-state Nebraska applicants get interviews, and over 50% of interviewees get admitted. I'd argue that it isn't "so hard" to get in...

Well that would be the same as any state school...CU for instance (since I'm applying there as well) invites about 400/600 to interview and from those 400, about 120 spots of the 156 are taken by in-staters. But CU also gets about 3500 applicants whereas UNMC only gets around 1400. Nebraska is a small state in comparison to most population-wise, and it definitely makes sense that they would take people that have lived there, as they are more likely to settle in NE than go abroad...I just don't think % of in-state students accepted correlates with poor education/atmosphere...just ANOTHER thought...

PS To all those who have been keeping track of the UNMC applicants thread, if you have been accepted it would be really sweet if you could post on the "official acceptance 2008" thread...just an idea...and if you are just checking this thread and not registered and not participating in the thread if you've been accepted/declined, BOO ON YOU! Get an account and tell us if you've gotten in!

PPS BUMP, ha.

"For those of you accepted/rejected already--what were your MCATs like? And did you ever do research or work at UNMC?"

I interviewed on 12/27 and was accepted on 01/24. I'm a Nebraska resident, but I didn't research or work at UNMC. 33P.

Im glad to see that I am not alone in stalking the progress of the UNMC adcom. And yes please please post updates and feed the obsession!

I interviewed on 10/5 and still haven't heard anything. I have a 3.6 and a 27P so we'll see how everything fares. I was actually born at UNMC so it would be kind of cool to go there. Good luck to everyone else!

Don't put words in my mouth -- that's not what I said. You had said earlier something along the lines of "I don't think it can be a party school since it's SO HARD TO GET IN" and I was simply refuting the last part of that statement. If one is a resident, one's chances of interviewing are incredibly high, and one's chances of acceptance post interview are also significantly higher than most other medical schools. For this reason, I do not think it is "so hard" to get in. Now Harvard, yeah that's super hard.

Hey elfish, I think what immokay meant by "so hard to get in" is that getting into any medical school is difficult, some much harder than others to use your example, Harvard. But even for residents applying to their state schools Nebraska included, getting into medical school is not something your average Party Student does on a whim. It takes alot of hard work and dedication to be a competitive applicant. Given this kind of competition it seems unlikely that those who are lucky enough to be chosen are what most of us would think of as "Big Time Partiers". Just my 2 cents. My dad graduated from UNMC and so I know from personal experience that it is a great school and those of us waiting around might not appreciate any bad-mouthing or what may be construed as such. Congrats to those who have been accepted! :luck: Good luck to all the rest of us still waiting.

Siiiiigh -- I wasn't trying to badmouth UNMC, but I guess I can't seem to be able to prove my point to any of you. Whatever, I'll be withdrawing so hopefully one of you guys that's super gung-ho about going there will get my spot! Alrighty, I'm out.

Elfish, I understand where you are coming from. I was neither trying to put words in your mouth, nor trying to start up some discussion about the "worthiness" of state schools vs. private ones like Creighton. All I was trying to say was that med schools are hard to get into period. This is my second application and being denied the first time with stellar grades and great interviews just goes to show that it's hard no matter who you are...it's really a crapshoot I feel like. Sorry you felt kinda attacked, but UNMC is my 1 or 2 choice so I was just telling what I felt on the subject. Anyways, what school are you picking over UNMC, I'm just interested. Oh and definite congrats on having a choice of which school, that must feel great! Good luck to you and thanks for the extra spot possibility, although having GREAT people at UNMC is the most important part...

elfish, I was not referring to you when I made the comment about "bad-mouthing". I apologize if it came across that way. I don't think there is anyone who would argue that applying to their state school isn't their best shot at getting an acceptance. I understand what you are saying. Not being a medical student myself I just have a very difficult time viewing a med school as having a "party atmosphere". I could be wrong. Good luck in which ever school you decide to attend. 😉

Didn't mean to send our thread off in the wrong direction, anybody hear anything lately??

Still nothing here.

I interviewed at UNMC On Nov 30th. Is there anyone else here who interviewed with me. They have told me that my file will be looked at about mid march.Has anyone who interviewed at that date heard anything. I am OOS.

Bump for updates.

10/26 interview, no news..................a little worried.
