Unsuccessful Cycle So Far

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are those the only schools you applied to? Michigan, NYU were probably donations. If this us your second time applying, you definitely needed more DO schools. Heck, you needed to apply to more MD schools within your stat range.

If you don’t want to wait another year, you could shotgun DO apps. No guarantee, but at least you have a chance if you don’t want to wait. You can also consider a gap year if you are a traditional student.

Yeah, I only applied to 7. I couldn’t afford any more than that. I have not heard a single thing from any of the schools, except for the R from UWSOM. I worry because I know, that out of the schools I applied to, UWSOM is the only one that screens their applicants before sending a secondary. Meaning that the secondaries I got were automatically sent to me. So I don’t have any actual gauge of how “good” my application is so far.

well this is an easy fix, you applied to 6 schools (Were not counting NYU..we both know that was an unfortunately non tax deductible donation) and are fairly lacking as far as clinical experience goes. Scribing is great but virtual scribing from home essentially takes the clinical part out of it.
For next year if you need to reapply look for some more clinical hours and let one of the many adcoms who frequent wamc give you a better school list.

Am I going to receive any IIs this cycle?

You only want to apply once. Being a second time applicant sucks financially and mentally. I agree you might need some more actual clinical experience. Maybe have someone look over your personal statement. You definitely have a chance at MD, your school list probably did not help your chances though.

Does being a re-applicant look bad to ADCOMs?

Unfortunately despite multiple attempts, I’m yet to unlock my psychic ability so your guess is as good as mine lol. It’s a long cycle so you never know but start prepping for a reapplication now so you have time to improve your app if you don’t get in
I probably won’t be able to get any “real” clinical experience until after I graduate in April. Will that even leave me enough time to gain hours before re-applying in June?

Statistically speaking you have a chance, but it dwindles for MD as Time progresses. Start working on building your app for the next cycle, and use the WAMC to ask the experts (@Faha @Goro) for a school list.

And it depends on the school, some schools do not look favorably on re-applicants, not to mention most schools will have additional secondary material to fill out while being a re-applicant.

It’s always easier to accumulate hours if you do small increments spread out over a long period. If you start now you can literally do 4-5 hours per week and come June you’ll have a pretty respectable number + a lot of great lessons to go along with it.

a fairly easy fix would be to scribe in person rather than from home if that’s an option

Take a gap year for better clinical/volunteer (if you need to) hours and to really vet your application. If you think you’ll be ready my next cycle, by all means go for it. Just make sure you have all your application materials ready again. You might also consider shadowing a DO and applying to more DO schools during your next cycle. I’m sure that you have a chance for MD interviews with your stats, but also have a better school list and apply beginning of the cycle. Med school is not going anywhere, although it is getting harder to get into every year.

So, if you were me, you would be preparing for a re-application at this point?

I’m rejected until I have an acceptance in hand. I would start physically prepping for a new cycle after Christmas, from now until then I would be making a checklist and a timeline on when I need to get things done. e. g. find a scribing gig for after you graduate, ask/discuss with profs you might need another LOR next year, continue to volunteer, kill the last semester of school, think about an MCAT retake if you can realistically think you can score significantly higher, ask friends/advisors to read your personal statement and secondaries for honest feedback. Focus on classes now, and do these things when you have free time, but don’t procrastinate.

  1. I applied to UWSOM (rejected), OHSU, Michigan, Wayne State, Loyola, Loma Linda, and NYU
You applied to too few schools, and OHSU, Michigan, Loma Linda, and NYU were donations (unless you're a SDA or devoutly Christian, in which case Loma Linda should have liked you). Your Ecs are very cookie cutter and probably research heavy.

Reapplicants get shade here on SDN, but if you take a gap year to improve your app, it's likely to make you more competitive, especially with a more strategic list.

You should consider yourself rejected until you get an accept email in your inbox. And yes, you should be starting on your re-app.

Read what the wise @gonnif has to say about taking time to improve your app.

I repeat: take a gap year!

Meaning that the secondaries I got were automatically sent to me.
Secondaries are often a tax on the hopelessly naïve, if not pathologically optimistic.

In hindsight, you should have worked a year, and saved up some money for more apps. You need to apply to 20-30 schools.
