UNTHSC MS Med Sci Program 2013-2014

Hey guys, just wanted to tell y'all that an email will probably be sent at the same time they update ur status to a check mark. So maybe that would ease the obsessive circle checking. Also I was told that I has till the 11th of April to accept my seat so I'm assuming that after that date, ppl would be going on waitlists. Hang in there I think that ppl r going to be hearing something soon!

Got the email! Accepted!

I stand corrected! Do you mind sharing your stats, and when you completed your app?

I usually dislike asking the former, but it puts stats into perspective for the rest of us.

No problem.

OOS non-sci major with a 3.4ish cgpa. TMDSAS gave me a sub-3.0 sgpa last Spring. MCAT 26 (looks like a few of us will be in that class) and I was complete around Jan 10.

I'm glad they got back to me. I've got a long move to plan for. Email came after 4pm TX time btw

Well, looks like another week of waiting for the rest of us. :bang:

Is it just me or is Jessica the hardest person to get into contact with? I have emailed her multiple times without any responses, and my calls always go to her voicemail. Also, Is anyone else waiting for their account activation code? I've submitted everything and have verified that they've received everything on march 7th and I'm still waiting for just my online access.....

Try emailing Amanda Griffith...she helped me

Has anyone who submitted their application more recently than January been accepted yet?

E-mailed Jessica about my status. She pretty much said that my application has gone to review already but the committee decided they wanted to wait and see more candidates before making a decision.

Probably a blanket reply to anyone asking about their status. Sounds like wait-list to me, though.

I had to contact Jessica directly for my activation code as well. It was very frustrating and took several emails and phone calls to get a response. I dont know how much the time of day plays a factor but she always answered the phone when I called between 11-2pm. Hope this helps.

@JuxGiant when did you submit your application? just wondering since you mentioned your file has gone to review already

About 20 students in the facebook group. Just an fyi. Hope you all hear back soon!

Definitely not just you. I agree though, it is most likely that she answers the phone between 11 and 2. Every time I have called her regarding my application during those hours, she's answered. Good luck!

Oh, you're that token person.

I'm just kidding! 🙂

Jessica said she personally updated my application as "complete" on 11/11/13. I'm sure I was one of the very first to be looked at / to go to review.

Anyone know the last week for being accepted?

When I called Jessica a couple of weeks ago, I asked if there was a time frame she could give me regarding acceptances. She said "we hope to have all of our acceptances out by the end of April."

I have been checking this thread for a couple of weeks now and decided its time join SDN. My application was sent in mid march, the week before the deadline and I too am anxiously checking my app's status everyday. I spoke with Jessica yesterday, she answered on my first try btw, and she said that she remembered my app and that it was mostly likely in review at that very moment and if not it would be reviewed in next couple of days. I hope there will be a bright green check mark in my immediate future.

Under application status. If it still says you're app has been received it means they haven't made a decision on you yet. Mine says "We are unable to admit every applicant due to a limited number of seats available. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer you admission at this time."
I'm so sorry to hear that! I think a good option would be to have your file reviewed by Mrs. Griffith. I think someone actually got in when they went and talked to her personally!

Congrats to everyone who got in already! I think I've lost all my patience with having to wait to hear back for sooo longgg. Major anxiety setting in! 🙁

No kidding.

I was accepted into a similar program of Texas A&M, of which I need to accept or decline their offer by the 18th, which is next Friday. Dunno what I'm gonna do if I say yes to Aggieland but UNT also accepts me in the following weeks. It'd be kind of a jerk move to withdraw after I accept.

Siiiiigh, another week and it seems none of us got a decision. This is getting pretty frustrating. 🙁

What is the name of the facebook group that was mentioned earlier? I wonder if anyone from that group got a status update today. Please post a link

I think it's only for those that are accepted. It's a private group and I think the admins of it work at UNTHSC and have the names of those who can join.

Isn't that harder to get into? Why wouldn't you accept that one? I applied to it too but I haven't heard anything back...

Talked with the pre-med advisor at A&M about programs with one-year masters around summer of last year, as to which programs I should apply for. She mentioned that, in her opinion, UNT's program was better than all the other programs in Texas. According to her, there's not a huge gap, but there's a gap, nonetheless. So I trust that judgment, considering it's her job to pretty much know these things, PLUS she's an A&M employee advocating another school's program lol.

A&M DOES take significantly less people compared to UNT, though - I think last year's class was 33 : 175+ for A&M and UNT, respectively. I'm not sure if that's the competitiveness of the programs or just the amount of people they want in their program.

Where did you hear that A&M's program was harder to get into?

I agree with you on this one. I talked to the pre-med advisor as well, and she strongly recommended the program at UNTHSC.

FYI, my last document (LOR) was submitted on March 10th and I received my admittance offer on 4/10.

cGPA: 3.13
Most recent 60 hours GPa: 3.8 (this is a criteria on which they evaluate applicants)
MCAT: 29 (10/8/11)

If anyone has any other questions, I'm an open book.

I look forward to this next year, does anyone have any inside info they would like to share on the program? All I have heard through a friend of a friend is that it is fairly intense, with tests every week. I'm up for the challenge however 🙂 In addition, I work at an ophthalmology clinic and one of our new, young ophthalmologists is a graduate of this very program. He told me that this program prepares you EXTREMELY WELL for MS 1 and had nothing but good things to say about the university / city.

Honestly she has answered the phone every time I called her (about 5 times over the course of this past month). Perhaps coincidence? I usually called around 12-2pm

This gives me, and I'm sure many others, some hope that we'll be hearing from them very soon. My last document was an LOR as well, submitted around March 12th, and I have yet to hear back from them. Fingers crossed it'll be sometime this week!

Anyone know the last week for being accepted?

In going off the previous year's thread, it seems like decisions are handed out up until a few days before the summer semester starts (and maybe even the day of!).

I'm really hoping they'll ramp up their decisions output - if they continue on this "every Friday" thing, it puts a lot of potentials in a bind. Some people are out of state, some people live far away from the DFW area, some people need to quit their job and / or find housing, register for classes, buy books, etc.

It's a laundry list of doom.

I know it is hard to be patient, especially when relocation is an issue, but just hang in there folks. From what I have heard (anecdotal, but through the grapevine at school) it has been a strange year with the admissions committee. Due to various reasons (retirement, work load, nothing negative or bad) the committee size has changed and they have been trying to keep up with the workload, which has led to the decisions coming out slower than usual.

I know that they do in fact meet every Friday, but I am not sure how soon thereafter decisions are actually updated on your myHSC or when the e mail acceptance goes out.

This acceptance process, along with med school and residency is just a game of hurry up and wait. Best to get used to it now. I have been in your shoes. It is the uncertainty that drives you crazy, and leads to all kinds of crazy speculation...sorry I don't have any better advice, just trying to help calm some of you down.

I will also say again that it is totally worth it. This program flew by so fast, and the head start I have on my first year material is immense. Imagine being able to go into your first year and having already heard and been tested on most of the material once before. It will hopefully reduce the first year stress significantly (at the expense of raising the stress during the master's year.)

Anyway, sit tight. Best of luck to you guys. It is definitely worth it.

Well, it's Friday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday. :corny:

I would post a Rebecca Black gif, but that would bring down the quality of SDN as a whole, so...

Good luck, everyone! Hopefully some of us will hear something today. I hope they're not off for Good Friday...

Anybody know how to accept the offer? I can't find it anywhere on myUNTHSC

Did u get an email? If u did then go to the student center tab after u log in and scroll to the bottom and it will ask you to accept or decline.

Hey guys, I'd like to post this in here to since most of you are probably in the same boat as me.

If you all had acceptances to this program, Tufts MBS, and Drexel IMS/MS. Would you consider leaving Texas?

Yeah I got the email, but I can't find the "Student Center". =\

When you first log in to myHSC, click on the HSC Admissions tab. Then in the "Application Status" panel, you should see "Student Center".

I applied to tufts as well and I traveled to Boston to attend their open house. Overall it was a nice program but I was surprised to find that unt impressed me the most. If u want details pm me. The biggest issue was the price, everything would have cost 60-70k as Boston has ridiculous rent. So to answer the question no I wouldn't choose tufts over unt.

Now that we're on the topic of other programs... what do you all think of USF IMS program? They accept 10-15 students to take all year 1 medical courses at their medical school with the medical students. Unfortunately you do not get med school credits, as you only get a master's degree in interdisciplinary medical sciences at the end of the year, and will have to retake the courses again in med school. I don't see this as a problem since you will likely get better grades the second time around.
What are your opinions on this type in comparison to UNTHSC?
I am a Texas resident but the fact that it is so selective and you take courses along with med students is really enticing me.
The app deadlines already passed and I'm just waiting to hear back from both UNT and USF IMS right now. (already got acceptance into USF regular masters program in biomedical sciences, which is my 3rd choice right now)
Looking forward to hearing your opinions!

Accepted! Received email at 1:29PM Central Time. Finished initial application on January 28, 2014 and submitted last item at around February 10, 2014.

GPA: ~3.68, MCAT: 27, had lots of leadership and volunteer positions and am currently working as medical scribe (I'm so glad I took a year off for volunteering and scribing; so much clinical experience!). Majored in applied math, minored in ecology and evolutionary biology. Breathed a HUGE sigh of relief.

Don't lose hope, guys! I hope to see you all at orientation!

Accepted as well! Received the email at 2:15 central time. Turned in the application on the 8th of January, but finally got my letters in around the very end of February. Both GPAs were around a 3.55, 27 on my MCAT but retaking this Thursday. Biology/chemistry and personal finance major/minors.

Hang in there, y'all. The patience pays off! See you at orientation!

If you do well in the Drexel program, isn't that an automatic acceptance into their medical school? I'd probably go that route, if that's the case.
