While serving at an American consulate, I completed a BA degree from a foreign country.

I e-mail them for an unofficial transcript, e-mail bounces back.

I call them, the phone is disconnected.

So I call the US Consulate where I worked and speak to my contact there. She tells me that university has shut down. And adds that the Department of Education in that country has no way to help and they have tried. Apparently 6 Americans and 2 Canadians have graduated from that university and now have no credentials to show for it. I am one of the six. 🙁

The American Consulate can provide me with a letter that says that I graduated from that university but beyond that they cannot help.

I call a medical school in my state and they say it's just my bad luck. Sorry, there's nothing we can do, they say. I call all the other schools and they tell me the same thing.

So I apply to Cleveland State for a BS degree. They don't take any action. I call them. They tell me my application is incomplete. I explain the whole story, even give them the letter from the American Consulate. Nothing happens for a month, two months and then I call them. They tell me the transcript problem has delayed my application and its too late to apply. I am advised to apply next cycle.

The next cycle, the same story at Ohio State. But I have an uncle who is a professor at OSU and he helps me out.

I have 27 credits at OSU so far. I have completed all my pre-med coursework from OSU. My GPA is 3.77. I think I can probably get a 35 or so on the MCAT.

What do I put down on my application forms? Do I mention my former degree at all? Because it causes major problems and my application status remains incomplete.

WOW! 😱
I'm sorry that I can't help you, but my sincere condolences.

Is it okay if I don't mention my former education at all? They wonder about my grades and I have no record of them except from memory. Grades were always available to view online but after the university shut down, the site gives me a 404 error. So would it be okay if I don't mention my former education at all? Because it really does not matter. It just complicates things.

Apply without mentioning it. If they find out somehow then just explain the situation.

Yeah, if the American Consulate has no records to help you out with... then no need to mention it. There's no way they could find out then!

That is really unfortunate though. I am sorry this happened to you!! Keep taking credits at OSU and get yourself the necessary credits to apply to medical school, which at most schools is around 90 credits.

Get yourself that degree at all costs! Good luck with the MCAT and I am sure this will work out in the end. Best of luck!

A really inquisitive person can find out with a Google search. I have a somewhat unusual last name, so I am not sure what to do.

Here's the kicker... if the transcripts don't exist... how are they going to find them?

If by chance you happen to find someone from administration. Have them issue an official transcript somehow. I'm sure they have a way.

PS. What university is this? or what country is it located it?

Just to give me a better frame of reference. Plus I'm super curious.

The university must be unaccredited if no one, not even the Ministry of Education, have any of the files from the university - which should be transferred upon shutting down.

Technically, it is a college. There are hundreds of independent colleges that make up a university. Each college is accredited by the university. When an individual college shuts down, the university sometimes has no idea that a college has even shut down. I know it's crazy but that's how their system works.

What country was this in? This sounds really sketchy.
