I received an acceptance email from my state medical school and a few other emails from them inviting me to come to campus for a second look, etc. But I never got anything in the mail from them and my status didn't change online. However because I had heard from them I assumed I was accepted and went about my life, making decisions like someone accepted at their first choice MD school. (No other acceptances in hand, just wait lists.)

Then the dean called me and told me it was a mistake, that there was a miscommunication between the branch campus that accepted me and the main admissions committee that approves their decisions. More than a week after I celebrated getting my first MD acceptance, it turns out I am only on the wait list. The dean said he could not give me any information about my position on the wait list or my chances of being accepted or how this happened.

I am not sure what to do. Surprisingly I am not angry, just sad... I really loved this school and its mission. I feel like the rug has been pulled out from under me.

I don't think your acceptance was not rescinded, because you were never really accepted in the first place.

In any case, there's nothing you can really do about it now except write an LOI. Crap happens.

Just wait and hopefully it works out in the end. Maybe write a LOI and include what happened and how you were elated to be accepted/notified of something different.

Maybe you were accepted but the paperwork hasn't gone through yet? If you do just remain on the waitlist, there will be a lot of movement in a month. Keep your head up!

Thanks, I will try.

I did get three emails from them and corresponded with them about Second Look Day, and that included an official "congratulations! you've been accepted! email" that invited me to join their class of 2017. It's not like I made it up.

Sorry, that sucks🙁 write a LOI and pour your heart in it, if you really feel like it--I know I would if it was my dream program🙂

But you never signed a statement of intent? I think that's the actual binding contract b/w a school and an applicant.

Edit: binding in the sense that the school agrees to hold a spot. You can still withdraw before 5/15 of course. Just to clarify.

I understand what you mean. I didn't think it was all said and done. I was wondering about the online status not changing and what happened to my official acceptance letter. But come on - you get a congratulations email, do you assume it's a MISTAKE? I'm not an idiot. I just feel like one now.

I understand -- I'd probably just think the mail is on the way or something :S This kind of situation definitely doesn't happen often enough for anyone to be mentally prepared for it. I'm surprised the online status didn't change to "waitlist." Hopefully the school will consider this fiasco and take pity when deciding who to take off the waitlist. Good luck!
