In regard to HPSP and UoP, it seems like policies have been changing and nobody really knows.

Over the past few months various Navy recruiters have told me...

- It might be possible as a 4 year HPSP, but I don't know.
- It's impossible because UoP is not considered a standard, accredited dental school (wtf??)
- Possible to get the 3yr HPSP, but unlikely because all the 3 year scholarships go to D2's very early so there's no money left in the Class of 2019 budget.

Various sdn posts over the last few years say similar stuff...

- it's impossible
- the Navy has recently created a special exception for UoP students to do 3 year HPSP
- maybe possible, but you still have to do a 4 year pay back

Does anyone out there have a definitive answer on HPSP at UoP for this cycle?

Im applying for the Army HPSP and my recruiter told me that even if I go to UOP, I will still have to pay back the 4 years.

I am applying for the Army HPSP and my recruiter told me that if you take the 20,000$ bonus then you will have to pay back 4 years( plus 4 years in the reserve)and if you dont take them you will only need to pay back 3 years(plus 5 years in the reserve). I just talked to him about it last week and he even called his supervisor to make sure.

Thanks. I actually confirmed this myself for the Navy today by calling the San Francisco Navy Medical recruiter. Best to go to the locals who deal with UoP the most. Anyway, the Navy recruiter confirmed all of that, adding that nobody ever chooses the bonus, so in practice it's pretty much always 3 for 3. That means that if I like the navy, I could re-up with an extra year of full pay as a dentist... Or if I decide not to specialize or anything and just get out, I can be completely done with school and my commitment with zero debt in only 6 years. How awesome is that

that's awesome. do you know if you can choose between 3 or 4 year HPSP upon acceptance? I don't think there was any distinction between the two on the application?

Spoke to my Navy recruiter.
She told me that I will apply for a 4-year HPSP.

If I decide to go to UoP, they'll convert it into a 3-year HPSP for me.

Army recruiter told me he is unsure about this.

Yeah I'm pretty sure you choose on acceptance and then it's converted. From what this recruiter told me today, it sounds like the 3 year HPSP for UoP is more of a special exception to the 4 year HPSP and a different animal than the regular 3 year HPSP which is meant for D2's at 4 year dental schools. The recruiter said that if you get 4 year HPSP, you get 4 year HPSP. Then IF the school you eventually attend is UoP you can choose to decline the 20k bonus and they switch you from a 4 year to a 3 year payback. The UoP financial aid office was really helpful when I called them and they knew recruiters in all the branches so I would recommend giving them a call for contact info on recruiters who know for sure how it works.

Thanks for your help! It sounds like a great route to take. I'm just waiting now to hear back from UoP and Navy HPSP haha.
