UOP advice please! I'm thinking about renting a studio that is on 1575 Sacramento St at larkin. It's literally next to the number 1 bus stop and google maps says it will take 6 minutes. Is this generally how far people live? It's technically in Nob Hill and not pacific heights and I'm not very familiar with the area. Thanks

Its only a little further from housing (2130 Post St). I'm guessing 20-30 minute walk, but if you're on the busline that's even better. I had classmates live all over town when we were at school. I think they started renting out apartments at the Presidio (which is a million miles away).

Judging from where you are on the map, its a straight shot to school.

I was lucky enough to get student housing, and I'm glad I did, it was just a lot more convenient.

Umm.... HELL NO!

I lived on sacramento between van ness and franklin about two and a half blocks from the place you're looking at. The walk or distance is not the problem... it the area. (I walked to school all first year no problem - 10 to 15 minutes)

Larkin St. is notorious for being the drag with all the hookers on it. Literally. It's way too close the Tenderloin which is an area that you don't want to be near. There's constantly things going down like murders, drugs, etc.

I'm also looking at studios in the area and I think the best bet is to stay in Pac Heights between like Scott and Franklin and I keep hearing that you want to stay north of Geary (as far as safety) and south of Broadway (as far as trying to stay close walking distance). Its hard to craigslist these places though because I'm from socal so I cant get a feel for exactly what I'm looking at via a couple of 2x2 inch pictures.

Don't listen to these people trying to scare you. Tenderloin is a sketchy place but that apartment is not in tenderloin (area below geary street). Nob hill is a safe place to live. I live about 2 blocks from the address you provided (closer to geary) but I never felt uncomfortable walking around. I never saw hookers, drug dealers, gangbangers, etc... The walk to pacific is about 10-15 minutes which would be most welcoming after spending hours couped up in lecture or lab.

I know that the tenderloin is kinda seedy but from everything I've read, this apt is about 2 blocks north of the boundaries of the tenderloin (not conservative boundaries either). Thanks for all your imput. I was mainly worried about the distance but that seems okay. See you all in 2 months!

We're not posting on here to scare her - we're telling her so she knows what she's getting into. I don't know how experienced she is with city living but being naive can lead to trouble... "it'll never happen to me." Crap happens all the time. A dude was stabbed to death just last weekend in the TL.

Neither your house or the one Sillygirl is looking at are in Nob Hill proper. She would be on the border in Lower Nob Hill aka by the locals the Tendernob. I wonder why? Do you think Geary street keeps the druggies and bad stuff away? And yes there are lots of hookers on Larkin especially on Pine near you. When you're going home after the bars one night, walk up Larkin. You'll see some sweet tranny prostitutes just chilling near your house. Don't worry though... everyone knows hookers are totally disease free, don't do drugs or attract the wrong crowd.

Btw Stripegum101- you shouldn't give advice before you have a little more experience. You even posted you "just moved to San Francisco couple of days ago" yesterday.

Sillygirl - I'm giving you solid advice as someone going into the third year - live as close as the school as possible... even if it means more $. If you stay late at lab, the last thing you want to do is walk 15 minutes in the dark to the Tendernob. You're in class and lab a ton and it's nice to run home during breaks or lunch.

I've been looking at 1br places in SF and the ones near lower pac heights seem to be around $1500 while those further to the West (i.e. sunset/seacliff/presidio) seem to be like $1100 max for a 1br in-law. U guys know of any other places to look for housing besides CL?

Isn't there a bus also? The apt is literally a block away from the MUNI #1 stop. It does run at night right? I took it late at night when I came into the city for my interview and it seemed very safe.

Thank you very much for all the advice though. It is very good to know these things. I'm just really trying to save as much money as possible. Debt is an extremely scary thing for me since I just got myself out of MAJOR debt. I feel like the place I'm getting is okay. I'm used to really horrible neighborhoods.

Problem with a building like mine is apartments rarely open up. Check again around this time next year 😉

Looks like I may have spoken too soon. PM me for more info if interested. Rent is $816/month for the smaller bedroom in a 2br/1ba, 1 block from school.

cool thanks for the info. armorshell. I think my problem is 1) i'm in LA right now and 2) i'm bringing my shih-tzu up with me. The latter issue is really what's been making it difficult for me (both in finding a place and in finding someone to roommate hunt with).

From your experiences, do you guys know if moving in June is better than moving in July? I'll be in Europe until mid-june so i'm kinda torn on when to move..I definitely don't want to feel like i'm rushing everything especially with school starting on the 11th.

I agree across the board. I have been finding studios that range from like 950 (small efficiencies in lower pac heights) up to like 1900. But with our allowance for living expenses being around 2100, finding something in the lower to mid range is definitely workable. I will be visiting the first weekend of June to find something and sign a lease. Good luck.

Ohh and if any third years have a studio or 1bd and are leaving, holler.

Looks like I'll have a spot opening up for this coming year.

1300/month (for all costs including utilities and other perks) for a fully furnished, shared bedroom place, 5 blocks from school. You only need to bring a desk, drawer and whatever else you want to bring. The place is huge, has 24 hour security, a guy who cleans the place once a month and everything is provided. My roommate and I are currently first years.
