Have you guys seen the UoP DAT average they put up on their website?

Q: Are my Dental Admission Test (DAT) scores competitive?
A: Our incoming class averages are:
  • Academic average: 21
  • Perceptual ability: 20
  • Reading comprehension: 21
  • Quantitative reasoning: 19
  • Biology: 20
  • General chemistry: 21
  • Organic chemistry: 21
  • Total science: 21
What?? Is this year going to be more competitive?

woah...thats the AVERAGE!? daaaaaaarn.

I think if your gpa is slightly above average then a 19+ should be ok. Don't they look a lot at life experience/ec's and stuff?

Everyone gets 21+ nowadays, it seems like.. I wonder what the national average for matriculants would be like this year. I am guessing at least 21

I believe UoP has a lower GPA average. They value the DAT more heavily than other schools.

I was told by a dentist I used to work with (off the record) that when he was on the admissions commitee at UW he didn't even look at your app unless you scored above a 20.

To the OP, yes, I think you'll be fine.

I bet the average will be more like 26AA/TS/PA

😕:scared:

Oh, crap; that's hard to hear. Well, I guess it's something I should have expected, it always seems like the standards keep getting higher. It's kinda frightening to see the upward trend from the past decade, although things do seem to be leveling off a little now.

Yeah, and that was three years ago!

21 is a little intimidating, however you have to remember that is an average.... you know there are prob a few in the class with 18 and 19, but there is also a few with 23 and 24. You also have to keep in mind how competitive UoP and the giant applicant pool they see every year.

UW's average DAT scores of those accepted was 20 20 20 aa ts pa for the most recent class so I think the above quote might be a little overboard. However, they do favor residents so that's good news for me and probably SeattleRDH lol.

What do you guys think they favor more AA or PA scores? I'm sure it varies between schools and application board members and such as everything else does. I would imagine high PA scores would be good as it's a part of the test specifically used for dentistry...

Totally agree. The DAT breakdowns posted on SDN perfectly represent the range of scores across the nation.

Haha, I didn't mean it like that... It just seems like everyone around me have been doing really well 🙂 I don't know anybody who hasn't scored above 23AA, like at least 25 people.

Dental schools can only accept so many people, you know?

I probably know a total of 10 total people who have ever taken the DAT, let alone anyone who scored above a 22AA. And about 1/2 of those people applied in the cycle before me!
I bet my experience is probably similar to most.

uop does have high dat averages but you can still get in with sub-20's, you just wont be considered the first part of interviewees

It's not all about the numbers.
