So im heading to UOP tomorrow, to meet with Dr. Dugoni, and Art (or a student he said), is going to show me around the school and what not.

I'm excited to be going to check it out, so i can know what im going to be working so hard for, for the next few years.

I'm wondering what type of questions i should ask. I mean, i know i will come up with a bunch, as i'll be very self-interested in everything thats going on, but i know i have a million questions and i know im not going to remember all of them.

Has anyone ever done something like this? any suggestions?
I know this post is extremely strange, but yea..

lol

Hey, that sounds like a good step. I've heard that UoP really likes people who take that initiative. Anyway, the best questions you can ask are going to be the questions you think of along the way. There's nothing more easy to spot that preconsidered questions. It's alright to have a few ready, but asking questions for the sake of asking questions is annoying.

Good ideas to think about that might cause you to think of some questions would be the program, the area, housing, community service projects, post-grad plans, etc.

Don't be nervous and have a good time!

Write them on an index card, bring it with you. Look over it if you forget something.

Don't worry by the time you're done with the tour you will have many engaging questions to ask. The school is really progressive, up-to-date, and touts a humanistic philosophy. These are three subjects that you can expand (ask questions) on your mini-tour. P.S. Gratz on taking the initiative and getting a tour. UoP really takes kindly towards people who show interest into their school.

Hey, thanks so much for the responses. When you guys say that they like people who show interest in their school, what do you mean, because I don't understand how they would even remember me (well dr.dugoni is a good friend of my grandfathers,
But he has nothing to do with admissions, he's just the Dean of Emeritus).
So is that something that I would mention when I apply in a few year or something?(the fact that I took a tour?)

ask "intelligent" questions, none of that "so how many of your students pass the boards" crap..... Some good questions are:

-What services are available to students if theyr struggling?
-Is there a mentoring program for the freshman class?
-Whats the patient pool like in this area? Do students struggle to meet their clinical requirements (obviously, these are questions you can ask when you get to the clinic during tour)
-Lectures and lab demonstrations, are they video recorded? (not just sound)

Don't go over-board with questioning, this could turn a 1 hour tour in a 4 hour session of Q&A

I wouldn't.... unless UoP has a 2ndary application, I guess you can mention it there.... But I wouldn't do it on AADSAS

I'd start by not calling him Art. Also, he has a mind like a steel trap so he will remember you and everything you say for years to come so bear that in mind.

Haha, yea, i never called him Art. Always Dr. Dugoni!

So how do you know Dr. Dugoni?

Ok, thanks for the input

The people in admissions do remember. At least, the lady who gave me the tour remembered well enough that she called me when my academic update was delayed to ask me what was going on, bless her soul.

Also, do you guys think I should take my earring out? I mean, Dr.Dugoni had already seen it when we had lunch... But do you guys think it would
Be a smart idea to take it out before I tour the school

Oh that's really cool, lucky you

"Yo, what's up Art?"

Hum, to add on to what I said, I would look into his biography and credentials. The man literally revolutionized the way Dental School is today. Know the word "Humanistic?" Well, he was the pushing it forward. Dental School before him was literally a nightmare. Didn't do your work correctly? Professor would just crush it in front of you and not care. Different times...different times indeed.

I learned alot about Dugoni surprisingly from other Deans/Interviewers. My Midwestern interviewer literally was praising Dugoni during my interview. Most of the new schools also adopt this "humanistic" approach, and yup, it stems from UoP.

Anyways, if I had to take the tour, I would like to know what drove him? What also inspired him? Why this progressive mindset etc?

Many schools/people are complacent with the old; however, UoP loves to push the boundaries forward. I.E. First 3 year program, "first" humanistic program, one of the first computer database, and heard about the new change in second boards/competency board for California??? Yup UoP hella pushed for it.

I second that.

I also suggest the Dugoni videos to anyone going to UOP.
they are on the UOP site somewhere, where dr. Dugoni is talking about his life, his mission and vision for the school and for dentistry.

http://dental.pacific.edu/The_Dugoni_Experience/Arthur_A_Dugoni_in_His_Own_Words.html - thats the link.
U can see the genuine, caring, visionary that he is. U can see it right thru.

Yea, I luckily got to ask him a bunch of questions and hear
His life story, as my grandfather and I had a 3 hour lunch with him (he lives near us).

Also, I don't know how many people know this, but UOP is building a brand new facility as well, within the next few years. They already bought the new building/ have the plans ready

Yup. Funny, sad, but true: my entire life I've attended schools that have plans to remodel....AFTER I leave. Argh why me! I want to experience the new stuff!

Did you get a sweet photo with him for facebook? Preferably with a couple of peace signs being thrown?

I wish finances allowed me to visit more schools I'm interested in before applying. I've visited only a few and completely ruled one out that I would have applied to otherwise. Websites and photos are great, but the 'vibe' on campus and the students say a lot about a school.

It really does show the school you are willing to put in that extra effort to check out their program. And I too have specifically heard from admissions there that they really like people to come down and check it. If you can land an interview down the road, it'll add some real spice to the 'Why UoP?' question.

r they expanding or shifting?
more space = more awesomeness.

New Facility. They are selling the old one

Well, the tour went great. I had the pleasure of having Dr.Dugoni give me a personal tour of the entire school and all the labs/lecture rooms/offices etc, and I got introduced to almost everybody we ran into along the way lol. It really is surreal, the whole experience. Nobody really has any idea what they are really in for,
When they say "I wanna go to dental school",
It's not just as simple as that. It's a real eye opener, with everything that goes on in there. Its pretty amazing. Seeing the simulation lab and the anatomy
classroom (which had 30 freshly dead bodies sitting on every table) and all the dental students working on all of their patients etc, was pretty awesome.

UOP is a great school, very nice environment, very nice people, great location, seems like a great place to be. It really would be a dream and
An honor to attend a place like that. And it's really unbelievable that, by 2013, a whole new facility will be built... This place seems brand new as it is! UOP and the ppl that work there are
Amazing. Great experience
