Hello SDN:

I got into UOP and BU. Can anyone please suggest me which one is better? I am really confused. Both are 2 years program. UOP is expensive than BU. But I am not worried much about $$$ as degree stays with us for life long.

Thanks

hi...i think ppl can only offer suggestions but u have to make the final call keeping everything in mind.....i had the same choice as u and i chose UOP....

Thank you Marlboro Lights. Sure. I will make final decision by myself. But I am just collecting other people's feedback.

No contest. Pacific. Pacific. Pacific and Pacific.
Did I say Pacific?

Pre Clinic 👍👍
Patients and Clinic👍👍
Community experience👍👍
Faculty and staff 👍👍
San Francisco 👍👍
Expenses $$$$$ (but that does not seem like a big concern for you. And rightfully so)
Research- not the strongest thing. BU is better.

Not that BU is a bad place or anything. My buddy went there and said good things about it.

If I had this particular choice, I'd go with Pacific

Pre Clinic 👍👍--- Yea you are spending 3 months there and its over!!!! Then during these 3 months, all you can see is the inside of your manikin! what difference is this gonna make?
Patients and Clinic👍👍--- Yea sure, but remember none of them prepare you well to real life dentistry so the difference is negligible
Community experience--- would you elaborate more
Faculty and staff 👍👍---Anywhere you would find good instructors and some *****holes. BU and UOP have some very big names.
San Francisco 👍👍--- Funny! I thought Boston is 👍👍
Expenses $$$$$ (but that does not seem like a big concern for you. And rightfully so)---I here would like to hear more about how money is not a concern here, and how it is "righfully so". For me its THE critiria once the difference is more than 10%... here its more like 20-25%

You will be happy anywhere you go, since both teach you what you need and lead to DDS degree.

at both you will be happy, both are good schools you are not comparing between USC and BU everyone would tell you pick BU but UOP and BU are good depends one which city you like more and as La Fea said BU is better in the research aspect if you are interested all the best

Thank you Monreal and Shery for the feedback.

My understanding is degree stays life long with us. Also proper dental education and patient exposures are more important factors to stand in the competition among other dentists. School is the best place to learn dentistry rather than outside school, where bunch of lawyers are targeting you. Also competition in dentistry is keep increasing. In some big cities, I see dental practice every corner of the building.

Keeping all these in mind, due to having options, I want to choose a school regardless of expense. I am sure and confident that I will recover my extra expense after graduation, if I have better education. 🙂

I would go with UOP if I had to select from these two choices.

Number of students in BU are more - I believe 70. That will decrease faculty: student ratio. On other side, faculty: student ratio is less in UOP - I believe 20.

Also dental chair problem in BU is serious. We should not undermine it. I would suggest you to visit both the schools and take the advice from students already studying there.

By the way, I have visited both cities. San Francisco is much better 🙂 - best in weather for sure.

Regarding yahoodentist's comments about the competition in dentistry, we should not take dentistry profession solely money making business. we should think about the community and community work. I enjoy relieving patients pain. And that's why I am in dental field. Anyway, it is individual's choice.

My understanding is degree stays life long with us. True, I dont remember I heard of a DDS with an expiry date stamped on it 🙂 Also proper dental education and patient exposures are more important factors to stand in the competition among other dentists. Education and clinical are important but they wont help in the competition. Marketing, location, smart financial planning and targeting the population you want are the important factors. School is the best place to learn dentistry rather than outside school This is nonesense, School teach you basics and 30% of what you will have learnt after ONE year in practice. Ask real world dentists around you and see where bunch of lawyers are targeting you True regardless of your school. Also competition in dentistry is keep increasing True regardless. In some big cities, I see dental practice every corner of the building True and again regardless of your school.

Keeping all these in mind, due to having options, I want to choose a school regardless of expense. I am sure and confident that I will recover my extra expense after graduation, if I have better education. 🙂

I am not talking you into chosing either over the other. I am just trying to clear out some concepts.

Most people will not be able to give a completely objective opinion, including myself, because most people are not students in both schools. Having said that, I think you should go to the Pacific, I had a fantastic experience there, it was a great educational experience 👍

If I were in your shoes, I would focus on economics.Look at the current scenario, recession etc hitting us so hard. Since WE already are DENTISTS, I would go for a less expensive school. Real learning and experiences happen when you start working.

Good luck

I would suggest you to step in to BU, because the atmosphere is really exceptional over there and the bottom line is its totally depends on you and your nature that how you adopt the things and accept the surroundings of any place.

If you want a great clinical experience and friendly faculty -- go to Pacific. Three years ago I had to choose between UIC and Pacific, and I chose Pacific. And I had a lot of fun, just like my classmate Kilani🙂
