it's 3 am here and i'm up to see a patient. one of the things you'll have to think about before this whole process is whether you'll feel like waking up at 3 am to see a patient. i'm waiting for my junior resident to come up to the floor now is why i'm not seeing the patient at this moment.

im so ready for this...GOD just give me the chance......

i remember those days of being so ready for it. now i'm more like ehh. i have a feeling like most people eventually it can become a blehh. i love taking care of patients, but when you're tired you can forget that fact.

now where is that resident? i wonder if she fell back asleep.

Oldman i feel your pain, I work at mount siani(I am a er tech) at Miami beach and its 6:30am and I just cant wait to get home. I work the 7pm-7am shift.

i agree - i work as a phlebotomist at a local hospital and i am routinely woken up in the middle of the night by my beeper - its always one of the techs telling me that someone has missed their shift and I need to come in to cover. i dont mind my job at all (in fact i genuinely enjoy it most of the time) but that all changes when i'm sticking needles in patients at 3am . . .

I have 2 little kids so waking up numerous times at night and not going back to sleep, or being up all night, is something I am used to. Still aint no fun though 🙁

I know it's not exactly the same thing but no sleep is no sleep.

that kid i woke up for is now doing better. probably some gastroenteritis. we rounded at 0700 and i finished up with my work aroun 11 am. so total hours at hospital started 7am the day before adds up to 28 hours. phew 2 hours before i go over the limit set by the course.

i actually don't mind the hours, it's that waking up to round feeling that's hard. otherwise i'm chugging along. in fact when i got home i went for a one hour bike ride.

sounds like a pretty normal day on the surgery service to me. 😉 The worst day I recall started at 5:30 am rounding on my patients. Multiple classes throughout the day and then a few surgeries and clinic to cover. On call and we got beeped every hour non-stop throughout the night with surgery consults. Actually had to finish a work up for SBO in the ED and head to see my patients at 5:30 am again. We finished rounding mid 10 or so in the morning. A very solid 30 hours without sleep. I actually loved it, but I'm one of those silly people that wants to be a surgeon. Hope third year treats you all well!
