Sorry if this has been posted a million times before. With the 'search' function out of commission, I really don't want to wade through a ton of posts...

How long are update letters supposed to be? Typed and mailed or emailed? Am I supposed to include info on why I want to go to this school, or is it just factual - my updates and that's it?

Thanks.

1 page.
email. factual.

why you want to go to this school = letter of interest
mail

You can combine the letter of update and letter of interest into one. Talk a little about why you love the school and why it should love you, and then give them an update on EC, grades, etc. Make sure it's just 1 page though. Short and sweet.

Also, when I sent in my LOI, I attached it as a document. I also converted the Word document into PDF. Not that it's necessary, but PDF just seems more formal.

Update letters are of more use in some circumstances than others. For example, I am an SMP student, and the update letters from the program director are literally like GOLD. I mean, I received several interviews within days of sending out some block exam grades from the toughest block of the year.

Now, I am not sure about the utility of update letters for students who write them themselves. I think EC's are especially of value, ie, you just published a paper, received a new healthcare credential, etc. 1 page is a good limit, short and sweet!
