Hi,

Yesterday my 1st author, original manuscript was accepted!

I included this as a “manuscript in review” in my primary app under a presentations/posters section as advised by Catalystik. I grouped this article along with several other related posters and explicitly mentioned that this manuscript was related to my senior thesis, which received the highest honors.

I am now hoping to update schools on the new accepted status change as I understand that a basic science manuscript “under review” holds little weight.

My question is as follows: Would it be reasonable to update schools this early in the cycle on the accepted manuscript and without a DOI? I am considering this format: “Author A, Author B, Author C. Name of Paper. Journal. In Press.” I could wait for the article to be fully published, but I do not know how long this could take and have already submitted secondaries to 35 schools.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Send the up-date when you have the DOI number or when you hear that the school has begun sending interview invites, whichever is first. You have 35 to send so it is going to take awhile.
Thank you! I have looked through a bunch of past threads and have not seen this specific advice anywhere, but it makes a lot of sense. I already have about 3-4 schools sending II's so I will prioritize updating those schools first. Then, I will wait until I get the DOI to update the other schools.

For the schools that I am updating without the DOI is there any acceptable way to submit some sort of proof? The paper was only accepted yesterday, so as of now I only have an acceptance letter.

If you feel that the school will need proof, why not wait until you have a DOI? Frankly, this would be a wacky thing to lie about because with time it will become evident if it is a lie.

Some publish online early, not sure if you can provide online link.

Well I don’t necessarily know if any school “needs” proof, but I just want to err on the side of caution.

From my own research this journal posts articles electronically within 2-4 weeks after acceptance with a DOI and PMID. However, the only downside to waiting is that I have applied to a lot of T20 research schools and an accepted 1st author MS is likely very different than just one “in review.”

Schools do not need proof if you send an update stating an article has been accepted by journal. Why? because if you get accepted and choose the school to attend, during prematriculation they will perform due diligence and verification of your activities. Checking if the publication exist is one of the easiest things to verify. if it does not exist, you may find yourself needing a letter to the dean with proof. If you cant produce proof at that time, you can be rescinded in heartbeat
Okay thanks a lot! I guess my last question is in your experience do you think a lot of adcoms would use a DOI or PMID to actually glance through a paper while reviewing an application?

The reason why I’m asking is because my paper was just accepted two days ago and so if I update now the paper will only be searchable within 2-4 weeks.

I just had an interview today at a school that does not accept pre II updates. In my secondary I was only able to mention the paper was provisionally accepted with minor revisions.

However, this is a research heavy school, which accepts post II updates.

Is it reasonable to now send a update letter that cites the 1st author electronically published manuscript (ahead of print) and includes the PMID + DOI? I am also planning on mentioning a new research position I have recently begun.

If it is appropriate, how long should I wait considering I just sent thank you e-mails + interviewed today. The school is “non-rolling” and only releases decisions at the end of Jan.

Any advice would be appreciated! @LizzyM @gonnif @Catalystik

Even if decisions don't come out until the end of the school's cycle, your place on the list will be decided soon and it will just be a matter of waiting to see where others who interview later end up on the list (or the wide staircase to use my favorite analogy). So, if the new info is t have any effect, it needs to go out today.

Great, thank you! Just to clarify, it would not be excessive to update on the actual electronic publication of the 1st author paper (DOI + PMID), even though I briefly hinted at its provisional acceptance in my secondary, correct?

I think that it is a good thing to add to your file before it gets reviewed post-interview by the committee members who will discuss and vote on your place on the staircase. Just say, "I am writing to add the DOI and PMID of my first author publication (my first!) to my file: [insert numbers} Many thanks to the committee for considering my application to Topdog School of Medicine."

Congratulations on your manuscript and posters!! Such amazing accomplishments!
I was wondering were you able to do this as an undergrad or graduate student? Or was this accomplished as a gap year researcher?

Thank you so much! I am looking for ways to beef up my application as I expect to become a reapplicant at the end of this cycle.
