Hi! Posting on behalf of my non-trad spouse. A LOInterest was sent in December; however it was worded as such that this particular school is tied as his number 1 pick.

Since that letter was sent, a significant, life-changing medical event happened, and the care received happened to be at this particular school's hospital. The care was incredible and without doubt, changed his position to this school as his #1.

The question is, can he send an updated LOI explaining this school has been solidified as his top choice due to this medical event, or is a LOI one and done? Or, does he just send a LOIntent now?

They know he's interested. He applied, and they interviewed him.

Sending in a letter of intent will make him feel that he's done all that he could.

You can always send whatever you want. There is no such thing as one and done.

That said, the most valuable letters are those that include enhancements to the application as opposed to just expressions of gratitude for excellent care.

Letters of intent, to the extent they are not treated as non-binding lies, are most valuable later in the cycle, when schools are more likely to actually care because they have an urgency to fill a seat, and candidates are more likely to be sincere, since they will have more visibility into what their true options are (e.g., right now, I'm still breathlessly waiting for my Harvard II, and am not ready to commit to anyone else -- that will almost certainly change by mid-April! ).

YMMV. Nothing you send is going to hurt, as long as the school has indicated a willingness to accept the submissions. This is JMHO regarding when it is likely to have the most impact. Good luck!! 🙂
