So, I just got offered a huge internship for next semester and it's as a sports medicine intern so it's relevant to my applications. Is it appropriate to call or email programs I've applied to and let them know about this so they can include it in their considerations? I really want it to be included in my application but I'm not sure about the best way for me to let them know about it. Just as a reference, I applied September 3rd, my application got mailed around the 15th of September, and so far I've heard nothing so it could affect all of my applications. Any advice is appreciated 🙂

I think the only thing you can update when the application opens for that in December is your "planned/in progress" classes, but don't quote me on that. I would call PTCAS and ask if you are able to update additional information, and perhaps add this as "Observation Hours, planned."

Otherwise, this would be great material to make sure to mention in an interview. I understand that the hope would be to get that in front of admissions in order to get the interview...

@MisplacedLondoner, is it PT observation hours or is it something you would put under extracurriculars (are you working directly with/for/around a PT who can verify them as observation hours or no)? You can update observation hours after you submit but I don't think you can change EC's or volunteer activities.

Also if you do update through PTCAS, be sure to call and/or email each program you are applying to to let them know you have done so. Several schools have informed me that they don't automatically get an updated app to pull into your file just because you did something on PTCAS, you have to let them know so that they can go pull your app again.

Yep, I just checked on my app...PT observation hours is the only section under "Additional Information" on PTCAS that can be updated/added to once you have e-sumbitted.

See here's the thing. I'm not sure exactly where I'd even put it on PTCAS. It's an internship with the US Olympic Committee- I'll be a sports med intern at the Olympic Training Center, and the way it works is my primary duties will be administrative and aide type duties but there will ample time to shadow physical therapists and treatments, and even help out. My supervisor is a physical therapist but I have no idea how much specific shadowing I will have, so it's hard for me to estimate hours to put that into PTCAS, I'm not really sure predicting every hour I work for the 6 months I'm there is appropriate, even if i'm working in a PT clinic the whole time. I don't think it's really EC either though. I've emailed all my schools, some have added it as a note to my file, others say I have to add it to PTCAS if I want it reviewed, and if I can't add it to PTCAS just mention it in my interview if I get one.

Well sounds like the situation is sorted then.

Why would it not be an extracurricular activity though?

And if you end up observing a PT, you can try to figure out once you are more familiar with the schedule how many hours it will be and then put them in PTCAS as "planned" hours...once they are complete they they have to be verified or re-verified. Some schools want all hours to be done before the deadline though so it might not do you any good...and if you don't have much of them done and able to be verified by the time you interview its not going to do you a lot of good anyway.

I'd just find a way to talk about it in your interview if you really think it is important.
