If I send my application out on Sept 1st and then a week or month later I want to send them a new personal statement, LOR, or update them on step 2 score, do I need to e-mail the program to let them know? I understand it updates electronically via ERAS. However, they may have already printed out a hard copy or not be aware of update on my app. How do I handle this? Do I call or e-mail program coordinator each time?

Thanks in advance.

It is safe to assume that once it's been downloaded, it's a part of your record and there's no going back. So if you want to send a new PS or a replacement LOR and they've already dl'd the ones you had up there, then it's probably going nowhere. New letters that don't go over your quota of 4, and step 2 scores will be automatically downloaded and you don't have to worry about it.

You can always send programs things offline, but how much attention they pay to them will be variable. I used the arrival of my step II scores in early february as an opportunity to email the programs I was most interested in to reiterate my interest in their program and "oh by the way, I got xxx on step II, hopefully you will receive the report." But as said above, this will get updated and sent to them anyway provided you release the updates to them. When things get updated on ERAS (like another letter finally being added) it will get sent to them automatically, they don't ignore it if it wasn't there the first time they checked in early september. But as said, don't expect them to really take seriously another letter that is beyond the requirements. If it's really a great letter you should have sent it originally.

As far as personal statement, why? If you know you are going to say something else then why not say it now? I can't see anyone paying serious attention to a second personal statement unless it gives them some kind of relevant new information, like you were just awarded a $50k grant in the field.
