UPenn 2014 cycle updates!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I was playing around on the Penn website and I figured out how to create an email account.

Since we were just talking about this I figured I would let you guys know, even though it's not yet necessary or anything.

I just went to the Penn Vet website and clicked Student Life under the Education/Training tab.

There is a link on the left entitled "Penn Portal for Students". I clicked it and at the top there is a link for creating an email account.

You need to have your pennkey all set up but I now officially have a penn vet email address. pretty spiffy!

PS. Are you guys taking out Grad Plus loans? Have you applied for them already?! Moving in August is going to be a nightmare financially and I'm a little nervous about beginning of the semester bills (books, fees, etc).

I know, I know we'll probably hear from the school but I figured I'd just ask

ok so i did this, then i clicked "webmail" (is this the link you were talking about?) when i type in my pennkey it says "You are not authorized to use Zimbra Collaboration Suite" ??? I know my pennkey works because i tested it out. I dunno, maybe i'm clicking the wrong thing lol

and no, i wasn't planning on taking out Grad Plus loans. Just Stafford. But yea, i think we're supposed to get our packet mid-May.

Hey Penn-we's

I am considering a summer sub-let. I might need a place to stay from around mid July to mid August while my house has some renovations done. If you know of anyone with an empty place that wants a little extra cash please PM me.

It will be my wife and myself, 2 dogs and a cat so an empty unit is preferable. I'll be posting on the Penn BB as well but thought I might find an upperclassperson away for the summer.

Enjoy the summer.

Ooo i like the new nick name! but i can't help but think of SOB too haha I guess my nick name would be BK- but that reminds me of Burger King 🙁 How about B3K, that looks cool! 😎

Do you want me to post this snippet of info onto the Penn fb page with your email address?? A lot of current students are posting places on there so it may be helpful since you cant see the fb page they can contact you themselves.

Sure, thanks. Appreciate it.

How bout B-33? Sounds like some new bomber from boeing!

Can you PM me your email again, I'm too lazy to search through my inbox lol

and yes, i like B-33!! sounds like an awesome plane, or jet 😀

Haha I like B-33 and SOV.

I guess I"m GB?! I do like England but I dunno...😉

So SOV-

I MIGHT be able to help you out. We are going down to look at an apt/sign the lease tomorrow. It may be possible for us to sublet to you for that month but we would need to move in in mid-august at the latest, plus we probably wouldn't have any furniture there or anything. (its a 2 bedroom apartment, pets are totally okay)

Let me talk to the fiance and I'll get back to ya

Hi Geebee.

Don't make any decisions because of me, but let me know if you are interested. I really appreciate your consideration!

Hi again!

Soooo I'm sorry, I guess thats not going to work out as nicely as I thought it would 🙁

I guess I should have asked before throwing it out there and possibly getting your hopes up but my fiance does want to move down in late july. I thought I could convince him to hold off a bit longer but he is dying to get out of his lab so, yeah.

I'm sorry! I hope you find a place!! 😳

GeeBee

I'll post it on the FB page tonight 😀 I can even message everyone in the group because I'm sure less people check it than when it was first put up and you don't get notified with new wall posts.

Does anyone know which microscope they use at Penn? I'm thinking of buying rather than renting but wanted to check out the prices first.

Info will be included in your summer mailing. They have pretty specific requirements for student-owned microscopes, which are all outlined in the packet, so just wait til then.

Didn't you get an e-mail from Deb Lefferts this week entitled:
"
Your First Mailing from Penn Vet Student Affairs - May 2010"

This is what the very long e-mail had to say about microscopes:

6. MICROSCOPE RENTAL OR PURCHASE

The use of a microscope for your first two years is MANDATORY. You will need a microscope on the first day of Class (Monday, August 30, 2010). You WILL NOT need a microscope during your third and fourth year. You have three options:

a. Purchase a new microscope which meets our requirements (the cost of a new microscope ranges from $800.00 - $1,000); OR

b. If you have a microscope which is used and meets our requirements, you must bring it with you to student orientation for approval by the microscope committee; OR

c. If you do not have a microscope, we suggest you rent a microscope at Orientation rather than purchase one. We have made arrangements with I. Miller Optical Company in Philadelphia for 2-year rentals. The total cost is $372.00 ($275.00 plus $22.00 tax plus $75 refundable security deposit). If you wish to rent your microscope, please complete the microscope rental reservation form and return it by July 30, 2010 with payment directly to I. Miller Optical.

The 2010 Microscope Guidelines are posted at: http://www.vet.upenn.edu/EducationandTraining/StudentLife/InfoforIncomingStudents/MicroscopeInformation/tabid/582/Default.aspx.

Are you sure Penn accepted you?

As long as the subject came up, Have you found that the rentals are good quality? I am inclined to rent but figure if the microscopes are garbage and make lives more difficult then I will spring for a new one.

Thanks for your input...

I'm not much of a microscope expert, but mine was just fine. The rental company is good about repairs too -- they will come to the school and repair if needed, and the lab has extra microscopes that you can borrow if yours is temporarily broken.

I'd say about 95% of the class rents -- its just easier.

Thanks. That makes for an easy decision!

Ha! That would suck if that's the way I found out.

Me: Which microscopes are you guys using?
Penn: You have not been accepted into our program.
Me: :barf:

I got that e-mail but it didn't list which microscope the rentals were (even though they listed the microscope requirements). I guess I'll just wait and see.

Sorry, I don't remember what brand the rentals are, and what Startingovervet posted is pretty much all the info we got before we showed up at school. I think as long as your scope meets the requirements, you should be fine.

So I got the e-mail from Deb Lefferts and set up my e-mail account. Any idea how to actually send/receive mail from that account? I know it is silly, but it would be fun to start using it now!

Btw, anyone else wish there were some big vaccine shake we could just chug and be done with it.!

I could go for an oreo shake now Mmmm

and yes, i am not looking forward to all this paper work. I need to compile vaccines i've gotten from 3 different places, and THEN have my doctor fill the form out 🙁

Was anyone else excited about the Class Notes Form?? I sent mine in. I can't wait to get a big buddy!!!
