UPenn 2014 cycle updates!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
haha well I have a few schools left to hear from but I think PennVet would be a great fit for me and would offer great opportunities for my fiance so...haha. we'll see. I'm in state at Tufts and have my interview coming up in another week and a half. I'm a little torn cause my family is all up in MA and I miss them and don't see them enough as it is but I'd be lying if I said I hadn't been looking at amtrak fares from philly to boston etc 😛

Don't forget to check out the BoltBus as well! My boyfriend lives in NYC - he'll usually take the train down on Friday night because of traffic, but take the BoltBus back up on Sunday at noon since traffic isn't as bad. The train fares are pretty expensive up here. It might also be cheaper to fly - Southwest flies into Providence and Manchester.

For those of you who interviewed on Fri 1/22, I hope you get a call today!
I got mine around 4:30pm so don't drive yourself crazy this morning.

Let us know when you find out

Agreed! We all want to hear your good news!!! 🙂

has anyone heard for interviews? I'm still waiting. I hate waiting.

Keep an eye on your inbox today - they've been sending out news regarding interviews and acceptances on Mondays. 🙂 And waiting is SUPER lame. I think everyone here wishes that it wasn't such a huge part of this process.

Would anyone mind providing their stats for those interview or accepted? Overall GPA, Science GPA, GRE... Just curious what their ranges are at Penn. Thanks!!

Mind you, I am an in-state student, so it might not 100% apply to OOS situations, but here are my academic stats:

Overall GPA: 3.85
Science GPA: 3.7-ish?
Last 45 hours GPA: 4.0
GRE: 750 Q (83%), 690 V (96%), 6.0 Writing (98%)
Academic Rigor: High (double majored in 4 years, member of Honors College)

My heart beats about 50,000 times a minute each time I check my email. It's maddening!

they look at more than stats,proof-how i was able to get an OOS interview!

GPA- 3.4
sci GPA 3.22 or 3.37 (depending on school/which sci courses they counted)
last 45 credits- 3.5
last 60 credits- 3.6
GRE 420V 750Q 5 Writing

I def think my personal statement and LORs helped me. I also have experience with SA, a little LA, wildlife+wildlife research, and lab animals+lab animal research.

My interview is in 2 weeks, i am so nervous+excited!!

I was accepted OOS...

cumulative GPA: 3.85
science GPA: 3.91
last 45: 3.95
GRE: 510V (69%), 780Q (89%), 5.5W (92%)

I'm also slightly non-trad (non-science BA degree and some graduate work in the social sciences before I went back to do all my pre-reqs).

To everyone who has gotten an interview so far....
what did you put as your top choice for interest on the pennvet supplemental page? A few people on here have said that those who put equine are interviewed later (sometime in feb)..I fall into that category so I am trying to figure out if thats true so I know whether im doomed :scared: or shouldnt give up hope :xf:

Any info would be a GREAT help!!! 🙂

Hey all, I was accepted as an OOS student, with small animal/research listed as my interests.

cum. GPA: 3.84
Sci. GPA: 3.82
last 45: 3.82ish
GRE: 780 Math, 700 Verbal, 4.0 Writing

Good luck everyone, I know waiting totally sucks 👎

I believe that the last round of invites (that went out about a week ago) were for an equine/LA day. However, I dug around in last year's Penn thread, and it appears that there were at least two interview days out at the New Bolton Center.
As of last week (when we were all freaking out together about not getting invites yet 😎), I think there were at least four or five of us on here who identified ourselves as "equine" who hadn't received an invite yet. Take a look at the last few pages of this thread to check up on the exact number. Still hoping!

I'm curious about the phone call thing because it seems that everyone who has been accepted has received a phone call 2 to 3 says after the interview. Has anyone else had a different experience or is it safe to say that if you don't hear in a couple of days that you didn't make the cut?

I don't think this was mentioned in the previous seven (how'd that happen??) pages but I don't have the time to check and maybe someone will have new info if this was already asked.

I'm curious about this too! i only hear about the monday phone calls. I did a little investigating myself and ALL of the people on the acceptance thread had their acceptances a couple days after their interview. I don't remember if penn was the one who had some applications on "hold" ? if so, i guess we'll see if they are accepted later

I'm not entirely sure about this year, but there have definitely been people in the past that never received the phone call. When I was preparing for the interview, I was looking through the interview feedback. I definitely came across one or two people who mentioned never receiving a phone call, and simply getting an acceptance letter ~2 weeks after the interview.

On the other hand, I haven't heard of that happening to anyone this year, so who knows.

has anyone gotten rejections letters in the mail? or at all? I just haven't heard anything. I called and they said I was up for review. I put down lab animal science as one of my top choices...

Actually interview invites have been on Tuesdays and I think a few on Wednesdays.

Not that I've kept track or anything. 😉

It does seem like MOST people get phone calls if they have been accepted. Apparently some people this year received emails after their interview saying they were being put on hold...which means they will review their application again later to decide whether to admit/waitlist/decline etc.

I had my interview Jan 8th and my interests were research and lab animal medicine. I was accepted on Jan 11th via phone call. For those of you wondering:

Undergrad cum GPA: 2.99 *yup 🙄 😳*
Undergrad science GPA: 3.14
Graduate GPA (all science): 3.7
GRE: 690Q, 630V 4.5A

Obviously my undergrad GPA is bad. I went to a small private liberal arts college, Tier 1. I'm now finishing up a PhD in microbiology and molecular genetics. My graduate work has substantially boosted my competitiveness as an applicant (obviously since I def wouldn't get in with those stats alone.) and it has definitely matured me as well.

This year they are trying to be a bit more organized about the whole calling process - last year, your interviewer would call...and sometimes, it fell through the cracks. This year, from what I understand, someone from admissions is calling in an attempt to "normalize" the process for all the applicants - this way, they know that everyone gets called at basically the same time, and no one is getting called while on the bus home from New Bolton, surrounded by all the other applicants! (Happened last year! Awkward!)

Did anyone on here hear today about their interview on Friday?

It sounds as though people who interviewed and are getting put on hold or rejected are also hearing at around the same time as those folks who were accepted. Overall, from what I can tell, the process is a lot more organized than it has been in the past, which I think is a good thing! Yes, you're having to wait 2-3 days instead of hearing instantaneously, but you're still hearing much sooner than most other schools! 🙂

If you haven't heard yet, don't give up hope!

I interviewed on Friday.. but haven't heard a word yet... I'm hoping we'll hear something tomorrow. This not knowing is killllling me!

cGPA- 3.55
sGPA- 3.3-3.45 (depending on what classes you add/subtract)
last 45- 3.8
680Q, 600V, 3.5 A

I was interviewed on the 15th and I was one of the people put on the mysterious 'hold'.

lol i cant wait to meet you this week!
Same here!

Thanks for reminding me of that. <quietly going insane>

Of course not! That would be an anal pre-allo thing to do. :meanie:

I interviewed on the 22nd and also did not hear anything today. However, I'm not particularly optimistic at this point...my interview experience wasn't a positive one and I cerainly wouldn't have called it conversational...

Sorry to hear it didn't go well. Don't give up just yet. I thought my Ohio interview went badly, but it ended up being okay. 🙂

Hahaha, I thought that was a myth. I didn't realize it happened to you!! 😀 EXTREMELY awkward....

Nope, not me! But it did happen to one of my close buddies who interviewed on Food Animal Day last year. I don't think any of the equine folks got called on the bus, thank goodness!

I got called on the train to NYC. I started crying. Quite embarrassing. Then called my mom to tell her, saying "Mom, I got in!"

Her reply, "Oh well good, let me know when you get to [boyfriend's] apartment."

...Awkward silence....

"No, Mom. I got into PENN!" (And not Penn Station!) 🙂

And Jaytee, I thought my interview went horribly as well. I asked our developmental biology professor if he had just a PhD, talked about the trashy book by Candice Bushnell I'd just finished, etc. It lasted for 16 minutes. I was totally panicked because they talked to the girl across the table from me for AN HOUR AND A HALF! And I still got in...not that I would recommend the above tactics, but still. You probably did better than you think!

DITTO! I haven't received a rejection letter either. :xf:

I'm also one of the people put on the fabulous "on hold" list after my interview on January 15th.
I emailed Mr. Keiter back and asked if they wanted me to send additional information, like my last semester's transcripts. Aside from that though, how much should I communicate with the admissions office? I don't know if checking in occasionally would be seen as a sign of commitment or just being a pain in the *****...

Oh and my stats at application time were:
Cumulative GPA: 3.78
Science GPA: 3.69
Last 45 GPA: 3.66
GRE: Quantitative - 790, Verbal -600, Writing - 4.5

As far as I know though, U-Penn only looks at your cumulative and last 45 GPA and they don't look at your writing score.

I just got the call!!!! Third time's a charm... so happy to be a part of the class of 2014 😀

Hey, for those of you who have been accepted - congrats! I was wondering if anyone has actually received an official acceptance letter yet? I think it'll feel more real to me when i actually see it in writing

I received my acceptance letter exactly one week after my interview. I'm in NJ though so it didn't have very far to travel. 🙂

I interviewed on the same day as GellaBella and received my official letter within a week of my acceptance call, but I also live probably less than 25 miles outside of Philly.

YAY congrats!!!!!!!!!!! And welcome 🙂 Feel free to send along any questions you might have.
Love the sn btw, assuming it's Chesney related 😀

It is, I have a 5 year-old half arabian mare that I bred, and I named her after the song... so thats what it is in reference to 🙂

I got my official acceptance letter in cleveland about a week and half after the interview. Congrats!

This is driving me crazy... it's the last school I have to hear from!!! Where's my email or rejection letter!

OMGOSH I'M IN!!!!! I got the phone call this morning! Crazy Hippos, Shanomong, and Ben and Me, thank you so much for helping me stay optimistic! I'm so so SO excited. Now it's decision time....

is there a specific office/person responsible for scholorship applications at PennVet? I have a scholorship I would like to apply for but the school has to make the actual application for me, I cannot apply myself. I'm not sure who I should contact about that...any clues??

Try Ashra Markowitz ([email protected]). As per Dean Keiter, she handles fin aid for PennVet. I actually have meetings with both (Keiter and Ashra) in about 2 weeks to discuss how much I really want to go to Penn and how much money sucks. 😳
