UPenn 2014 cycle updates!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
awesome thanks!!

The fellowship I want to get is AMAZING but the deadline for schools to apply is March 1st. It also requires the school to basically make another seat in the class...dunno how receptive they are to that but I need to see.

Thanks again!

ETA: Turnbackhelly you beat me too it 🙂 How did your talks with them go?

I'm meeting with them on February 8th. I purposely scheduled them then, the week after I come back from an accepted students open house at my IS. I'm hoping that maybe I'll fall madly in love with my IS and it will steal my heart away from Penn and I can have the best of both worlds (school I love + not being quite as far into the poorhouse)... which is highly doubtful, since I've already visited my IS (more than once) and it has yet to do so...

I also took the Jeopardy online test last night, in hopes that maybe Alex Trebek can pay for me to go to Penn. Just want to make sure all avenues have been exhausted before I have to turn my seat down... 😉

Funny -- I did, too! I haven't even been accepted yet, but I'm planning ahead.

make sure you buy your lotto tickets too!! Mega Millions in NJ is at $144 million...just a short trip over the border and you could be set!

and then you can share some of the winnings with me for giving you the idea 👍😉

I may be in the same boat as well. I still have a couple (much cheaper) schools to hear from. If I get in to either of those other places, i'll have to do some negotiating/pleading with Penn to consider going there 😡

my in state is Tufts so basically where ever I go, I'm gonna be paying a ton. This is nice in that I don't feel TOO guilty if I choose an expensive out of state school but is also bad cause more debt is just not very cool.

All my other schools are expensive, with the exception of NCSU but even if I were to get accepted I don't think I will be going there.

I have my Tufts interview next week, if I get in there its gonna be a PennVet vs Tufts faceoff

whoo! just got the call! 🙂 pennvet class of 2014! congratulations everyone!!

Congrats everyone that got in 👍 🙂 !!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone get any interview invites yet this week. I'm starting to get worried about Penn.....I really, really wanted to go see this school. I am still hoping though:xf:

Congratulations to people who got the call today!

ColoGirl - no interview invites this week. I thought for sure we'd hear something today, but no luck. Maybe tomorrow!

Hooray!!! Congrats to everyone that's hearing good news!!! Soooo excited for all of you! :biglove:

I got my call while I was at work this AM! I just interviewed on Friday and they told us flat out that they weren't making calls this year, only sending letters. Now I just have to get out of the clouds and focus on my Tufts (IS) interview next week...

Hi guys!

I have more questions (sorry!), I'm just trying to get an idea of what it might be like to attend PennVet in the fall 🙂

Does anyone know the cost of a SEPTA pass for university students? I see on their website they have discounts for students at UPenn but they don't mention the costs.

also, does anyone commute from Manayunk to the school? or know anything about Manayunk? I've heard good things about the town and while I wouldn't necessarily mind living in Philly my fiance is definitely NOT a city person.

This page has prices for the PennPass for different SEPTA zones. I think you'd have to use the SEPTA site to figure out what zone you'd be in.

Shan- The classmate you're thinking of drives in.

And GellaBella, here are the prices for parking in the garages at Penn. Also, Manayunk is still pretty city-ish, so I'm not sure that's the answer to your fiance's aversion to the city. And you couldn't pay me enough to deal with driving between Manayunk and school (or Manayunk and anywhere, really) - 76 is a nightmare out that way.

I currently live in east falls, but lived in Manayunk for 2 years while doing my Master's at Drexel (in center city). There are plenty of ways to commute into the city (bus, train, car). I have used both the train and drove. I am commuting about a half an hour/40 min to work every day on 76 and wouldn't trade living a little outside the city for a shorter commute. I think it all depends on what's important to you. I plan on staying in the Manayunk/east falls area next year while I'm going to Penn 🙂

Just to clarify, I don't live in the city either, but would not be willing to deal with driving back and forth from Manayunk. Some people love Manayunk enough to think it's worth it, but I prefer Delaware county... 🙂

dear upenn... did you lose my application?

Has anyone with Hold Status heard anything about when we might expect to have a decision?

Has anyone with Hold Status heard anything about when we might expect to have a decision?

Nope. nothing. The email said wait, so I'm assuming we are waiting until they finish interviews, decide on everyone and then some people decline.

I know someone who got in a week after being put on hold but I've also heard of people having to wait until March. My guess is lalzi22's right and we won't hear back until they've gone through most if not all of the other interviewees.

I hate this waiting though, every time I get a call from a 215 number, I get excited only to be let down...

So, what are my chances of getting an interview at Penn if I haven't received one yet? There were no interview invites sent this week (at least none to SDNers), and we know there is a Hold list and a Waiting list. I'm just trying to be realistic, even if it's a sad reality.

Well, if they plan on doing a separate food animal interview day, they may have sent out those invites this week (and probably not too many SDNers are in that crowd...).

I haven't heard anything from them either. In the spirit of assuming the worst, I'm guessing rejection. I don't like to get my hopes up. This way it's either "Yup, that's what I thought" or a pleasant surprise.

don't give up hope you guys! at my vmcrvm interview today there was a girl who came from penn and she said that they changed their class distribution to 70% OOS and 30% IS. now, who knows if she knew what she was talking about. but i assume she heard it from a valuable source because she didnt apply to penn herself and she is IS. i mean, who doesn't apply to their IS?? whether or not your tuition is high there is still a better chance of getting in. so who knows, maybe it's tru!

Don't know where this girl got her info but I'm pretty sure it's untrue. I'm almost certain they have to accept 50% of the class from IS. Maybe one year they received less state funding, in which case they could change the distribution, but I don't think thats the case this year.

Does that mean I'm less special as an oos admitted student ?😛

seriously though I hope they at least considered offering in state students a spot with oos tuition. Not sure if many would take that but who knows

It's strange to think you might gave a better shot as an oos-er than an in state student... Crazy

Well we already knew that Penn enjoys doing things differently than everyone else. 😉

(Also, I'm with you Gella - totally don't feel as special anymore! lol)

Equine day that people have referred to is actually Equine/Food Animal Interview Day, so it's combined.

This actually is true. I was talking to one of the interviewers today after class and he didn't give me exact numbers but said that we've changed it around this year to accept more OOS than IS because we've received $4 million less in funding from the state and need to make up for it somewhere.

Ahhh!! This makes me furious! 😡 I'm IS! I feel like this is so unfair, even though I understand that Penn is private (which is a different entity altogether) and can do pretty much what they want. I'm beginning to feel like I have a better chance of making the Olympics than I do to get into vet school -- and I don't play a sport! Sorry to vent -- I honestly do wish everyone the best and love the fact that everyone on SDN is so supportive and uncompetitive. I'm just very mad right now.

So i was curious and went back to the PA site to see the applicant IS vs OOS stats and acceptances. Look what changed on their FAQs

"2) Do PA residents have a better chance of being admitted to Penn Vet?

Yes, about 34% of our class of 125 students comes from PA. Out of over 1,200 applicants, about 250 are from PA. That leaves about 1,000 applicants from outside of PA, from which we will take enough to fill the remainder of the class."

This is amazing. that was pretty sneaky how it changed after the application deadline. This does suck for IS people, but honestly, if i calculate the percentage of my IS school (vmcrvm) their class is made up of 30% people from MD...so its the same. and when i checked the percentage admitted upenn is about 17% with the new data and MD residents for vmcrvm was 23%...so a teenie bit higher but its not really that much of a difference. So it does suck, but its not like they completely slashed it down to nothing. The old percent for penn IS was 24.8% so at least it wasnt cut in half. but ya, sry for the lousy news for you IS folks

Talk to your legislator and governor. The school literally had no choice with the budget cuts.

Sounds like I'll have to. Why does education (of all things) get slammed whenever there's a budget issue? Terrible!

Thank you for the info everyone.

Agreed. It sucks big time and is seriously short-sighted.

Don't give up hope yet though! :xf:

So, I gave the admissions office a call this morning under the pretense of making sure they'd received my transcript, but really to try to glean some info 😀.
The lady told me that there are "several" interview dates remaining, and that they weren't sure of the exact number yet. She wanted to clarify whether my interest was more equine or mixed animal (listed #1 and #2 on my supplemental), and explained about how they do equine/LA interviews at New Bolton. So, hopefully there's another equine/LA day in the works (at least that's what I keep telling myself!). Just wanted to spread some hopeful cheer 🙂.

I'm still staying hopeful - I have a friend who is a second year at UPenn, and she ASSURES me not to worry too much, there are still plenty of interviews to be offered. 😉 So don't give up!

Haha. I called this morning too...but used no cover. I outright asked about interview invites and was told the same thing. I have no shame.
The man I talked to was very understanding of my nervousness. He also said they will send interview invites up to 2 weeks before the interview day.

Good news!

I registered but it doesn't seem to be up and running? Did anyone else register and read the 2 posts? haha

Ok seriously UPenn?? It's Feb 3....I just need a decision already. I have all rejections so far and that's what I'm expecting but I need the closure....the longer this takes the more my fantastical day dreaming gets carried away.....

Anyone know when they send out rejections? I've had trouble finding a thread from last year to compare dates.

I called them a while ago to ask this, they said rejections won't go out until end of Feb/beginning of March.

If I remember correctly (although I've tried to forget), I received my rejection from Penn last year in the beginning of March.

I did speak with someone at admissions yesterday who reiterated what others on SDN have said -- they are still making decisions and will be for the next month. But trust me, I understand your pain Cypress -- completely.

So hopefully you guys won't hate me for this, but apparently someone declined their interview on the 12th and Penn called this afternoon and offered me the spot. I am SHOCKED and thrilled and 100% panicked about how I'm going to get everything done in time, but super excited. Looking forward to meeting some of you NEXT WEEK :scared:.

Yup, I hate you...but congrats anyway!! Good luck!
