Hi! I'm not sure if anyone has asked about this yet, but I'm starting at Penn in the fall and I'm looking for some information on good locations for apartments. I'm assuming that I should be looking for buildings as close to the dental school as possible, so here are a few companies I got from the off-campus housing office:

A.H. Kline
Campus Apartments
University City Housing

What are the other good rental companies out there? Also, what buildings are in the safest areas? On my undergrad campus, it was relatively safe to live a mile or more away and walk alone late at night, so I'm not really sure where the "boundary" of safety is on Penn's campus. I've also never lived in a large city...so living there as a woman by myself will be an adjustment.

Also, I found this website with feedback on landlords:

http://dolphin.upenn.edu/~consumer/

A lot of the tenants seem to have issues with rodents, roaches, and other insects (a lot of the landlords got a grade of C).

Are there any buildings without rodent/roach problems that are in a safe area with reasonable rent and reliable landlords...? ( I know...I'm looking for the ideal place to live ). I'm looking for a studio or efficiency right now, I guess.

If you have any information you could give me on some good locations or quality buildings...or just any advice in general, I'd love it! Thanks so much!

Sweet so you decided on Penn. Thats good to hear. i would like to know some of the same info from current Penn students too. 👍 👍

hey...i live fairly close to philly so i went to the city last week to look at apts. in general, its way early to be looking. all the realtors i went to told me that they only require 60 days notice for moving out, so they dont know what will be available in august until june. a.h. kline showed me some apts that were pretty nice. their fairfax is only about 3 blocks from the dental school. their apts seem pretty pricey, but they are very safe (locked entrance, 24 hr receptionist in lobby). i might be living with my boyfriend, so that would bring down rent enough for me to afford it...thank god because they allow dogs! they even have "dog exercise areas." haha i cant wait to get a puppy now. anyway, there was lots of housing within a few blocks of the dental school, which is on 40th. i was adviced not to go much further than 44th. i also met with a lady that leases apts. she showed me 2 that she completely gutted and redid...they were beautiful. the 1 bedroom was too small for 2 people and she showed me an efficiency/studio that was pretty spacious. those apts were on 44th and $775(studio) or $650(1 bedroom) including cable and internet. i can get you the contact info if you want...i think she'd be willing to sign a lease now because she knows those apts are open in the fall. all in all, its really early to be apt shopping around penn according to the realtors i went to. you might as well wait until its warm to start looking! see you in the fall 🙂

I currently rent from UCH and my building is rodent/roach free (I live in the Branden). What's nice about them is that gas/heat/internet is included in the rent for almost all of their properties - and with energy bills on the rise that can save you some serious cash. On the whole Campus Apartments is a bit more expensive than the other landlords and they have some strict lease laws (e.g. you can only get internet from their provider, you have to renew your lease 6 or so mos. in advance, and so on) but their properties seem to be nice and well kept. I encourage all of you to make a trip up to Philly and see the places for yourself. Best of luck!
