Hi friends..i thot i will start a thread for the Upenn class of 2010 so we can discuss housing, loans and in the process also get to know each other!
We dont have much time..school starts in less than 5 months!
I was wondering how r u ppl funding the summer program..cuz its not covered by the loans..Hope to get a lot of inputs from everyone.
 
Try your personal bank. I gonna try to get a loan using my apartment for an equity to see how it works. Any ideas where you guys gonna stay dorms, apartm if anybody have any ideas let me know
 
hey darkshadow..ya..wondering whether to take it from our personal savings or take a loan..will do something which works better in the long run.

It is located abt 15 mins from school and was not as expensive compared to other apts in the area...but dunno how the location is..if its safe or not...
If u find something lemme know...
 
So i got the package today. I have to come up with 6,134.00 wich will be due on december the third.
 
I havent got mine yet...will call up the school tomorrow and find out if they sent it to the right address!! So this year they have increased the cost..last yr it was abt 17K..and this yr its 18k...hmmm.
does the $ 6,134 include the acceptance deposit of $500 or is it separate?

No, you have to add 500 dollars extra to the 6100

I talked to a girl who is a PASS graduate and she said its better to stay really close to school initially as its a real pain to commute if u r not familiar with the area. She also said its too early to look at Off campus housing (I got the same reply when I emailed the off-campus housing office)..I guess late dec or early jan will be the best time.
Also On-Campus housing is not for us students in the professional course-only for undergraduates.
Usually school gets over by 5 pm but sometimes it will go on till 9 if there is a seminar or something like that and those times, security ppl from the school will walk u home or drop u at ur place.Security is pretty tight around the school with patrolling going arnd.Her only advice was not to venture out at night esp during winter...Summertime,one can be out till 8 pm.
She is currently working and said that its not a prb to get a job, she graduated in May and after finishing all her requirements got a job in aug-sept...all her classmates have got good jobs so its not something to worry abt!!We will be able to repay our loans!🙂

I am gong to penn. So gl to every one. I mailed first and second deposits yestd to school. I hope that I made a rightchoice of chosing penn. Gl to every one waiting. I am on a 2 month long vacation now, gng home😀.

O.K guys..
I am joining the celebrations..
Received Corky's nice call few days back...
Started looking for lenders.. No stundent loans you know until going to DMD3..

'cause I have a small family; I think I will leave them where they are for the period of the pre-enrollment program than look for an apartment in the suburbs because primary/elementary schools are not so good in the city center..For the time being, I will look for some place close to the school for those 3 hectic months.. Problem is I don't think any landlord will rent only for 3 months, so I am looking to take over from someone instead of signing a lease contract...
Can you help with that ?

THat sounds like a plan let me know if you hear anything i am on the same boat. Got a find a place for those 3 months.
 
I was interviewed on Nov 6, got the call on Nov 12, so I think they are speeding things up.

Hey darkshadow.. Keep an eye too for people looking to get out of their lease contract.. Though I know it is difficult to find such an opening..
But ... You know... never lose hope...

if u don't mind rtvj, would u please tell me which year u graduated foreign degree & what nationality u are?

I am from India and graduated april 2001.
I am sure there will be lots of ppl who got in but dont know abt sdn and havent posted here.
The nov 13th batch were told that the results will be announced in 2 weeks so am sure u will be hearing from them soon...i guess with thanksgiving and all..everyone's in a holiday mood!

I visited Philly a few days back to check on housing...
This is what I gathered..
1. On campus housing for us is available but only from July/August. It is extremely difficult to get on campus housing for the summer prgm.
It is half the cost of Off campus housing and there r 2 places sansom east and west which r most popular for dental students.It is better to fill up a form which can be downloaded from the website so u will have a better chance if something opens up.
One main restriction of On campus housing is that it does not have family housing..so if u have kids..forget abt this. If u r single or married..its a grt place to live in!

2. International House is also close to school and houses dental students but it does not have family housing too.
I personally liked Ihouse a lot cuz they have so many things going on...but i am looking for family housing so cannot move in there.

3. Off campus housing is plenty arnd school but its too early to look into it now..though there were a couple of places open in february..pls check campus apts..they r the ones who own these places.

If anybody has more info..pls share.

U must have done interview very well. I don't know any body who got accepted, but i am sure there must be lot of students bc/ on sdn i see only 6 got accepted. i don't know if anyone from last year wait list got accepted.
i think i will go meet them. What do u think?
 
R u planning to go and meet the ppl at the school?? if u r in the same area then its ok..but if u r going to travel from another state...i think u should call and talk to them first...they r pretty friendly and will give u general information.

No they want me to fill the form for alternate status, so i think it is better to go there. I don't know how hopeful i should be, just praying.
I don't know if they filled all the seats or not.😕
 
I sent the acceptance and first installment checks....for those who have sent it..did u get a confirmation mail/letter or should we call and confirm?

There r 6 on sdn who have posted their acceptances...dunno how many seats have been filled totally.
 
I called them and they told me they received the checks. They will send written confirmation. So if i were you i would call them to make sure because deadline is next monday.

Hi guys, i just got a call from Ms. Cacas that I have been accepted at U Penn. I am so happy about it.

Really happy to finally get to post here. Got a call from Ms Cacas yesterday.
Was on cloud no 9. Will be getting my application package today. Hoping to see you all in APRIL.

I just got the letter with the confirmation that they received the checks in that letter they also say that in the coming months they will send me information regarding immunization requirements, the student handbook, and orientation information so i guess a lot of our questions will be answer with that information.

just stopped my brain functioning for few miliseconds ,
