  1. Pre-Dental
Hi,
I graduated from UPenn this year, and I loved Penn. I want to get your opinions on whether to apply to Penn or not for dental. I heard that UPenn is notorious for discriminating against their undergrads for their health schools. I'm not a US citizen, I am a dual Canadian/Sri Lankan citizen. I have a cgpa of 3.45. My Science gpa is 3.28, and my non science is 3.63. I just did my DAT today and here is a breakdown of my score.

PAT 19
QR 17
RC 24
Bio 21
GC 30
OC 23
TS 24
AA 23

I am applying late in the cycle. What do you think are good school I should consider? Thanks.

dude with a 24 ts you'd be crazy not to apply to upenn, definitely consider umdnj and colombia. you got nothing to lose. i agree it is a little late, but those are definitely competitive scores.

what did you use to study with? especially g chem cause i hate it!

Hi gentile1225,
Thanks for the reply. I actually took the DAT Kaplan classroom course over the summer. Unfortunately I was also taking summer physics at Penn (which was intense-midterm every week, hw everyday), which was 3 hrs a day 5 days a week excluding phys labs which were 2.5 hrs a day twice a week. Because of this I only learned what was presented in the kaplan class. I had no time to do the online tutorials, assessments or full length tests- which are major component of the course. This is why I had to postphone my DAT till now, because I only really got to study for it after my physics course was done in mid august. What I did was read through the Kaplan DAT blue review book once, and look through my DAT classroom book (which focuses on the most important concepts, and also was annotated with my class notes). The only full length test I did before taking the real exam was the diagnostic test that we were given at the start of the DAT course in mid-summer. I had no time to study for and do their 2 other online, full length practice tests during the summer, and I got locked out of their site after the course so I couldn't access them when I needed them for practice. However, I did answer all the review question sections in the Kaplan DAT review book. I guess that helped. I also trained with datprofessor.com, but that was complete crap- don't waste your money on it. I went into my DAT exam, expecting to get killed. I was quite surprised by my score. My advice to use whatever DAT resources you have and do as many practice qs as you can. I know that's basic advice, but that's really the only way.

Penn is notorious for loving a high GPA and not being that impressed with a high DAT. I had about your GPA and the same DAT and I wasn't accepted. This is not to say you shouldn't apply, I definitely would If I were in your shoes. They may be more forgiving of a 3.4 knowing it was at Penn, who knows. Having gone to Penn undergrad and being foreign= i have no idea if this helps, hurts, or neither

Columbia on the other hand loves the high DAT, so check them out as well. They are also not as worried about inviting and accepting applicants late in the cycle, so it may not be too late for them either. Uconn also loves the DAT.

If you haven't already submitted your AADSAS materials by now, it is most likely too late.

hey, i graduated from Penn in 06, and did a postbacc at columbia..
i didnt really like it but that tends to be not the case for most people that go there. i got a ts 26 and aa 24 and took my dat on sept 30th, and have 1 interview so far at columbia. i would say you should get used to waiting for a long time to hear back from schools, but i guess its not too late?
