Trying to get opinions on the Philly programs.

What I've heard: UPenn has the strongest name, but is heavily research oriented and can be malignant

Jefferson (less research, more clinical training) > Temple > Drexel

Any further info on the malignancy? Is it just to being overworked or non-friendly attendings or varying resident personalities, etc?

Any opinions on the locations of the hospitals in the city? e.g. housing, parks, crime, etc.

Also, what are particular strengths of each program? What types of residents e.g. MD vs. MD/PhD vs. DO, vs. FMG?

Temple is in North Philadelphia. Temple is a good institution (in many fields of study, not just medicine), with a lot of good residency programs...but its location tends to drive people away. Its location is generally known as one of the most crime-ridden areas in town. It probably wouldn't surprise you to learn that most of the residents and med students live in the northern suburbs or Center City, and commute in to school/work. The northern suburbs (particularly Manayunk and Roxborough) ARE very nice, and Temple is easily accessible by train and subway. It's just...well...not the SAFEST place to walk around at night.

Hahnemahn/Drexel is located near Broad and Vine, which is in Center City. Jefferson is at 10th and Walnut, which is also in Center City (probably a 10-15 minute walk from Hahnemahn). Center City is pretty safe, and parts of it are kind of frou-frou. But it's a nice place to live, with plenty of fun bars, restaurants, stores, etc.

HUP is in west Philadelphia, at 34th and Spruce. West Philadelphia has gotten a lot safer in the past few years, thanks to Penn's various community projects. West Philadelphia is slightly more run down than Center City - the buildings are a bit older. However, in return, west Philadelphia is quite a bit cheaper than Center City.

The only program that I have any exposure to is Jeff. Jefferson's neuro program has gone through a bit of a "revival" lately. It used to be a bit of a revolving door, from what I had heard - a lot of attendings were coming, staying for a few years, than leaving. However, they recently invested a lot of money into recruiting new attendings who specialize in epilepsy and movement disorders, and the department has gotten a lot stronger. They also have an extremely strong stroke center, and I think that it's a bonus that they have their own dedicated neuro hospital.

Thanks for the info. I sure wish programs would update their websites... it would make things a whole lot easier.

There are malignant and non-malignant attendings at every program and U Penn is no exception :xf:

Perhaps, but you don't want to get somewhere that has any sort of reputation for malignancy. Let the brash elitists take that spot.

Haven't visited any of the Philly programs yet so I can't speak to them specifically.

But I would be very, very careful about making assumptions about programs based on what other people say about them. Virtually 100% of negative rumors I have heard were not correct once I visited.

In fact the friendliest program I have visited has a reputation for being one of the most "malignant".

People get insecure or defensive about the big name programs or something. Go visit and check them out for yourself.
