I just received an interview invite from UPenn Dental, a school that I really had my eye on through this whole process. I have a deposit in at another great school, and was wondering if you guys think it would be a good idea to still interview there. The only way I would be able to afford to attend would be with the Dean's Scholarship- which looks to be in low numbers after the first round of acceptances. What to do? 😳

First you need to attend the interview, then you need to get accepted, and finally you would need to get the Dean's Scholarship. That is highly unlikely and maybe even unnecessary since you have already put a deposit down elsewhere.

I read your previous posts and I assume you put the deposit down at Stony Brook. It also seems like you're in-state for Stony. I see absolutely no reason why you would want to attend an interview or even consider Penn. Its an overpriced school in PA that will only cause you to take out more loans. SB is a great school and many on this site, including me, would give up their left nut to go to an amazing and cheap school like Stony.

Penn might be better for specializing but even then I see absolutely no value or advantage in going to Penn vs. Stony. If you have tons of $$$ and want to visit it for an interview then do it. But personally it would be foolish to go to Penn and spend a ton of $$$$ for the same level of education.

Wow, Stony Brook. I definitely agree, it is not worth the hassle. You are already accepted to a great school.

That's what I was thinking too, I just needed to hear to from someone else's mouth. Thanks guys

How can you give this advice when you yourself were fretting between Penn, Pitt and several other schools (with Penn gravitating towards your top choice for a while)? I say if you are very interested in Penn (and would be willing to go over Stony Brook if awarded a scholarship) then by all means attend the interview and do your best.

go to the interview. you may love it there. you deserve it for yourself to see if you can get in and if you could see yourself there. If anything, you've already gained acceptance at a great school, and there is nothing to lose by going, only something to gain!

If you're relatively close and just have to hop on a train or drive there, then I would say go. You have nothing to lose and its would be nice to visit the campus.

If you have to jump on a plane and get a hotel room, I would say not worth it. Save your money and stick with stony brook

I can give this advice because I am a fellow applicant who knows how much money and time interviews take.

Upon second thought, though, I loved the Penn interview. It really was low-pressure. Already being accepted, if you were to attend I think you would enjoy the day. I'm not sure you'd end up with Penn stealing you away from Stony Brook.

I'm actually doing the same thing, even though I know where I am going, I am going to my Tufts interview just for the road trip.

I would definitely recommend taking the interview. I'm in a similar case with Columbia. I've decided I may as well go. You just never know.

I would say attend the interview, but if your premise for attending is the dean's scholarship (which is probably not likely at this point), then there's no need to go. Just a waste of time and money IMHO.
